2006 Census: Stay At Home 21st to 25th of March
2006 Census: Stay At Home For 5 Days

The upcoming census comes up on the 21st to 25th of March . And we are expected to stay at home through out the period.

How are we going to cope? Most  of us live by the day.

No incoming for 5 wholes, na wa oooooo.

I have not seen any proper planing, except some adverts on Radio and television.
I think ""The result is already know to some people, why distrub us.""

I am not saying census is not essential for the developing of the country, but what had they done with the previous ones.

Update by moderator:

THE Federal Government has declared two days, March 24 and 25, as days for the restriction of movement for the 2006 census. President Olusegun Obasanjo made the declaration Wednesday in Abuja at the presidential forum on the 2006 census.

The president, who said he had received a letter from the chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC) asking for the restriction of movement for two-days to compel Nigerians to stay in their homes to be enumerated, disclosed that the request had been granted and that Friday 24 and Saturday, 25 March had been declared as restriction days.

Probably not, but the restrictions will also apply to them.  I'll be working at home, as usual, on Nairaland!

We need to stay at home is for our own future, but what i don't like in the thing is those people that employed people have put politic in it. If u see the kind of people they are training for the program u will know that they just want to waste our money again.  They just put any how people into it, just because of money they want to make for themself can u believe it in my area  they are training  secondray school dropout , house help, [People that can not even write simple English correctly] e.t.c.

I'm a freelance software developer and my current contract stipulates that I only get paid for the days I'm working at the customer's office so I won't get paid for the days I have to stay at home for the census and that will hurt :-(

Having said that, bearing in mind our particular enviroment, I appreciate the reasons why it's probably better to do the census this way as we are more likely to get closer to an accurate figure (And please note that I used the word "closer") than trying to count people at work etc.

Census comes ones in many years, for the purpose of economic planning (even though it seems to be none in Nigeria) let's stay at home till we are counted. In all honesty, 5 days too much ooo for the self employed, but it is a matter of sacrifice . I really understand what the self employed will go through unlike some of us that work in ,  and get monthly pay.

Opportunity for me to rest for once. I started working for , since my NYSC in year 2000, I have only gone on leave once. I work virtually all the days of the year Mondays to Sundays and closing very late. Praying for more cencus. This is a real big bonus.

I suggest that nigeria should digitally speed up with its national registry so that stay at home issue for census can be avoided. With good degistry track record, every birth in a nigerian family can be recorded and each family knows how many they are and if each family is given an identity, then nigeria is one step away to become a hero

As long as a person can count and properly record their countings, their level of education shouldn't mater. Every eligible person should have a chance to be part of this historical event. To show discrimination in the process of the hiring for those to carry out the census process would set a bad precedence for the process right from the beginning. Alot of you-all often perceive nothing but negativity in everything the government does. This is a very bad mindset.

But Canada is not beset by corruption that might tarnish census result as in Nigeria. What I don't get is why it has to take 5 days to do.

Why is it in this country we are always complaining about corruption, mismanagement, lawlessness, etc and when the government orders something we that complain are always the first to break the law? The goverment has ordered that we stay indoors from 8am to 4pm to be counted for the National Census, yet everyone is already complaining.

A good example is in Port Harcourt and for those who are here, I believe they can confirm. The goverment has recently installed traffic lights to control traffic, but come and see what is happening. Okada don't obey them, most car owners just pass when there is a RED, but then go to other countries and you will see Nigerians obeying laws even better than the citizens of the nation.

President John F. Kennedy once said, "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country" but over here its the reverse. Making Naija a peaceful, uncorrupt, lawful nation is not only in the hands of the goverment but rather in our hands. If we do not join hands to make this nation great, it will never be and trust me complaining of everything that the goverment does or laws that they pass, will not help us at all.

@demmy you are wondering why it will take 5 days, have you thought what is involved in counting an estimate of 180m to 220m people? :8

Before the Government issues laws it should consider the welfare of the people.  left to me I think census-taking by asking people to sit at home is so 19th century.  What you should do is ask people to submit their unique fingerprints or something over a period of one year.  When last did the US organize a census and ask people to sit at home for 5 days without any income?

Other countries are more than we are and it only take 1 day to count. What? NPC can't get enough enumerators to cover the country in one day?

@seun lets be realistic and ask ourselves, in this naija if the Government said go to so-so place and submit your fingerprint for counting, how many of us will do so? For one I can tell you, taxi drivers, okada riders, market women, etc wont obey. During the last ID card registration, if there hadnt been a rumour that eventually the government will require the ID card when carrying out most activities in Nigeria, no one would have turned up for the exercise.

Anyways, don't know about you guys, but personally, I will definitely enjoy the holiday Smiley

A lot of thse other countries you are talking about have a database of everyone from when they are born, so that makes life easier. Unfortunately, we don't have any form of filing or database, so counting needs time Smiley

The federal Govt have only declared Friday and Saturday as public holiday.

I think before they have talked before thinking.

So not five days just One working day--Friday.

Actually you're right onanugaola. The headcount itself will only take 2 days (24 and 25 march) not 5 while the housing census start on Monday 20.

Census: FG restricts movement only on March 24, 25

So why the heck have those lazy governors declared the entire week holiday in their states? Tongue

I don't want 'em to waste our money anyway but how will those who want to benefit from Baba Iyabo do so if he does not do something now? Remeber the National ID?
