Nairaland / General / RESEARCH & DEVT: Four Nigerian Students Generate Electricity From Urine by NoiseMaker1: 3:19pm On Feb 14, 2013
The whole fun of living istrying to make somethingbetter – Charles Kettering, American inventor and social philosopher.
Nothing is really a waste in the real sense of the word. Almost anything one can think of is reusable. Everything has some value one way or the other. This was what four teenage secondary school girls in Lagos set out to prove.
Disturbed by the incessant deaths of Nigerians, most of the time, an entire family, from carbon monoxide poisoning from fossil-fuel generator, the yo-yo movement of petroleum products prices, environmental degradation and the recent fuel subsidy scam, four Senior Secondary School II students of Doregos Private Academy, Ipaja, Lagos, decided to find solution to the problem. In a chat with Vanguard Learning, the girls – Duro-Aina Adebola, Bello Eniola, Akindele Abiola and Faleke Oluwatoyin, shed some some light on the project and what they hope to achieve. Excerpts:
An idea is born:
Said Duro-Aina Adebola, leader of the group; “I read on the internet that a family of five died of carbon monoxide poisoning so I asked myself what could be done to reduce these incessant deaths from carbon monoxide poisoning?

From left; Faleke Oluwatoyin, Duro-Aina Adebola, Akindele Abiola and Bello Eniola

“We were always encouraged to bring up ideas to help solve human problems so one day, we were in the Guest Room of our school; we thought of what could be done to solve this problem. We thought of what we could use to power the generator instead of using the conventional fuel, something that can replace conventional fuels and that will not release any obnoxious substance like carbon monoxide into the environment; something that will also be cheap for Nigerians. You know that when the issue of fuel subsidy removal came up, there was hike in prices of petroleum products,” she said.
‘A problem well stated is a problem half solved,’ according to Charles Kettering, so having identified the problem, the girls moved on to seek solution.
“We started looking at various materials. We looked at water but we felt that the amount of voltage it will take to break the water moleculeis large and we wanted something small so we can have a larger output. We decided to look at waste products because Nigerians always opt for something they won’t have to spend their money on. So we started looking at different materials, one of which was urine. We were looking for something that is liquid, something that has hydrogen molecules in it. We also observed that the amount of voltage it takes to break a urine molecule is less than the amount it takes to break the hydrogen molecule in water. So we opted forurine since we have a higher output,” she said.
The generator:
“The generator is a conventional fuel-based generator. It combusts slower than the hydrogen gas so we had to retard the ignition of the generator. We actually retarded the back-timing on the generator by 11 degrees.”
Components:
“We have an electrolytic cell, water filter, an empty gas can, borax andour retarded generator. The electrolytic cell is an old battery cell we got from the junk yard; we removed the contents of the cell and then used perforated stainless steelmesh as the electrodes so urine is placed in the electrolytic cell, where itis electrolysed, releasinghydrogen-oxygen gas mixture. This mixture then goes into the water filter. The water filter is to remove any impurities that might have come in with the gas and then it goes into an empty gas cylinder which serves as the gas storage.
“The gas cylinder pushes hydrogen into a cylinder of liquid borax, which is used to remove the moisture from the hydrogen gas. Borax serves as a drying agent and this is because we do not want lots of moisture going into the generator. Also, borax helps to remove any other impurities that might have come in with the gas. The purified hydrogen gas is then pushed into the generator,” she explained.
Asked how much it will cost to acquire a unit, she said; “It’s something we are still working on because this is a prototype which cost us about N4,000 apart from the generator. We are working on improving this so it can just be our own generator, a Nigeria-made generator that works based on urine.
Advantages: For this generator, the exhaust gas is the water vapour. Itdoes not emit carbon monoxide like the normalfuel-based generator so this ensures clean environment for Nigerians. Again, one litre of urine can give yousix hours of electricity.
Appeal:
“We are appealing to people to build up on what we have done. Theyshould take up the idea and help us to improve on it so that it can be something that can be in every Nigerian home because this was not made to be lying around; it was made to be used by Nigerians. All we needis support so we can take it to the next level. We want a situation where every home can have this. We also want to make it compact so you don’t have to have different compartments, they can all be in a singleunit that can just be attached to a generator.”
Other projects:
The students are currently working on other projects like bomb detecting radar, motor bike safety device and also paper from maize straw (agricultural waste), to save our trees and environment.

Crime / Man Bites Of Ear During Fight over N200 by NoiseMaker1: 3:56pm On Jan 31, 2013
A provisions trader, Chukuma
Ameh, has been arraigned
before the Senior
Magistrates’ Court, Mararaba
for biting off the left ear of
one Abdulaziz Saidu in a fight
over N200.
The pair were found fighting
on the street by the police
patrol team attached to Sani
Abacha Road, Mararaba B,
led by Inspector Mayibe Tube
and were arrested.
Both of them were treated at
the Maraba Medical center
before they were taken to
court yesterday.
Ameh who spoke with
LEADERSHIP outside the
court, said after the Nigeria-
Ethiopia football march on
Tuesday, he was at his shop
at Abacha Road when
Abdulaziz came into the shop
and demanded to be paid
N200 he claimed to be owed.
He said he was eating at the
time and had told Abudulaziz
that he owed him no money,
following which Abdulaziz
went outside, picked a bottle
and made to stab him with it
but he had blocked it with his
right hand, a move which
almost cost him his right
thumb which was almost
severed by the bottle.
“See my hand, I slept in the
hospital yesterday because
the cut was deep and one of
my veins was cut. After he
injured me on the hand with
the bottle, he hit my head
with the bottle and it was in
a bid to save myself that I
pushed him to the ground
and bit his ear,” Ameh
explained.
In his defense, Abdulaziz
denied that he had
wrongfully attacked Ameh.
“Chukwuma asked me to
change money for him to give
a customer so I gave him
N200. After the match, I
asked him for the money and
he said he didn’t owe me. He
was the one who dealt me a
blow first and we started
fighting. I later went to the
police and made a report and
some policemen followed
me to his shop.
“When we got there, he told
the police to go that we will
settle the matter amicably
and after they left, he broke a
bottle on his head and as we
were fighting, he bit my ear,”
he stated.

Sports / We ‘ll Eat Nigeria Like Super Fried Chickens, Ivorian Eboue Boasts by NoiseMaker1: 11:27am On Jan 31, 2013
Galatasary of Turkey and
Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire
defender, Emmanuel
Eboue, has boasted that
his country will eat the
Super Eagles of Nigeria
like ‘super fried chicken’
when they meet on
Sunday in one of the
quarter finals matches in
the ongoing Africa Cup of
Nations holding in South
Africa.
Eboue, who through his
twitter handle

@TheRealEboue,
congratulated Nigeria
shortly after the Super
Eagles defeated Ethiopia
to reach the knock-out
stages but was quick to
caution Nigeria not to
celebrate to much as the
Elephants are coming for
them.

The former Arsenal player
maintained that Eagles
were no match to his
side. His first tweet read:
“Congrat to Nigeria. Don’t
celebrate too much cuz
we are coming for you.
We are going to eat you
like fufu”.
Minutes later, the Ivorian
defender tweeted again:
“Sorry guys, point of
correction. We are going
to eat Nigeria like #
SuperFriedChickens.”
From then on, it has been
an unending tweet tirade
on not just the Eagles as
a team but Nigeria in its
entirety, a situation that
has seen some twitter
users arguing that Eboue
was being impersonated.
Some of the tweets read:
“@TheRealEboueI see ppl
saying I hv pride by
saying we wud eat
Nigeria like fried
chickens, it’s not pride
guys, it’s hardwork &
passion 4 my country”
“@TheRealEboue: In
Nigeria team, some of
your best strikers like
martins, yakubu &
odewinge are not in the
team. Why? No peace,
passion, & humility”
“@TheRealEboue: Ivory
has some of the top
players in d world, and
when our country calls.
We go. We go back home
and play. Nobody is a big
boy. So shut it”
“@TheRealEboue: A
country where mikel obi
is your best player &
captain . Out of
150million people. You
sure have a problem
super chickens”
“@TheRealEboue: With all
due respect 2 mikel, he is
a good player but not
Okocha,
Samson,yekini,Oliseh,
adepoju. Your football
association is a joke”
“@TheRealEboue: When
keshi was in Togo, he
dropped adebayor. He is
in Nigeria and drops the
best player. He is a
manger he should be able
to work on their ego”
@TheRealEboue: I have
said enough on this
matter. I was so angry.
Speak to me when your
national television can
broadcast the game.
Have a good day
@TheRealEboue:Keep
fooling yourself and
calling yourselfs the giant
of africa. You are nothing
but the soil of Africa we
all work on now.
@TheRealEboue: You
guys are jokers. Your
institutions are comedy
clubs. You have so many
resources & man power
yet you are always falling
short.
@TheRealEboue:Oh sorry
Nigeria, I even heard your
country owns the first
African television and
you cannot even televise
the game to the masses
@TheRealEboue: Drogba,
Yaya,kolo, Zakora,
gervinho,KaLou, and
myself and all other
players. We are all the
same. One unity and
family. Country comes 1st
@TheRealEboue: I have
said enough on this
matter. I was so angry.
Speak to me when your
national television can
broadcast the game.
Have a good day
@TheRealEboue: If we
don’t beat you in the
game, it means you are
lucky. But trust me, we
are going to deal with
you so much , you would
be eating grass
@TheRealEboue: Why
don’t you speak to your
NFA that cant grow a
good soccer academy &
produce players to last
for a decade instead of
new faces every week
@TheRealEboue: Blame
me, i don’t care. I would
say my mind. You can
even blame me Ghana can
show the game to the
masses and NTA cannot .
Cover your face
TheRealEboue: My last
word for Nigerians . Do
not cry for me , cry for
yourselves. In the true
spirit of sport , I love you
all . Don’t get too
emotional.”

Crime / Man Sets Sister Ablaze For Pouring Water On Dog by NoiseMaker1: 10:11am On Jan 24, 2013

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Top Excuses/complains Of Ronaldo Fans by NoiseMaker1: 5:28pm On Jan 11, 2013
Excuse no. 1: Ronaldo is the

best because he has more

style, more charisma, and can

speak English, while Messi is

stuck on Spanish and is a

short tiny fellow.

Ok, seriously?! You have to

drag a football related

argument so far away from

football? Charisma and

hotness will not score you

goals my friend; the football

does. Messi has 91 goals in

one year, a record that took

40 years to break. So what if

he can’t speak English?

Believe me people, Messi is

the kind of player for whom

many of us would happily

learn Spanish.

I’m not kidding, this is

actually what some fool gave

as an excuse! Isn’t this the

height of insanity? If speaking

English were such an

important reason for being so

great in football, Sourav

Ganguly (Indian Cricket

Player) should be tons better

than Messi because he speaks

fluent English! Heck, I should

be better than Messi because I

speak fluent English! Or wait,

fashion? So being fashionable

means being great at

football? Then all these

fashion models should be

thrashing Barcelona on a daily

basis!

Seriously? Football and

fashion are not related at all!

Excuse no. 2: The Ballon d’Or

is biased, Messi never

deserved to win it in the first

place.

This is like the greatest, most

hilarious joke I have ever

heard! So the fans think they

know football more than

international captains,

coaches and journalists!

Because if you do, YOU

should be playing football on

an international level. Are

you? Have you got any

knowledge of the game that

extends beyond FIFA and PES?

Because not one of you, not

one, can ever replicate the

skills, dribbling and talent of

Messi or of Ronaldo, so you

have no business criticizing

either of them. And who are

you to decide if the Ballon

d’Or is biased? So Ronaldo

didn’t win it, big deal! Does

that in any way reduce his

legendary status?

Excuse no. 3: Ronaldo can

play in many different

leagues, Messi can’t play

anywhere but Barcelona.

Ever heard about the term

‘loyalty’? I thought so. You

don’t know what loyalty is

because you are a bunch of

glory hunters. You should be

ashamed of yourself. Messi

was not rich, he was suffering

from a hormone deficiency

which Barcelona treated. Due

to this act, Messi has stated

ever since he joined FC

Barcelona that he will never

leave. He gives full credit to

Barcelona for what he is. That

shows his humility as a

player. In fact, half the Barca

squad are La Masia players.

These guys are CREATED by

Barcelona, unlike your darling

Ronaldo who was brought

from United for a record

breaking sum. Remember this

haters, Barcelona created

their champion, Real Madrid

brought theirs. And why

should Messi leave? He

doesn’t run after money and

trophies. I mean, what more

does he need to win at the

club level? Give the poor guy

a break and stop making lame

excuses!

Excuse no. 4: Messi is only so

great because he has Xavi and

Iniesta, Ronaldo doesn’t need

Xavi and Iniesta.

Now here I would like to

quote the phrase used by

someone.

"Ronaldo is the only ‘Real’

player in Madrid"

I’m sure he thought he was

being funny, but in reality,

that exposed his utter lack of

knowledge about football.

Ronaldo is not a solo player,

he has never scored a goal

running 65 meters. Messi has

by the way, and so has

Maradona. What this writer

was trying to suggest is that

Real Madrid doesn’t need

their squad, Ronaldo is

enough. Oh really? Do remind

me of his defensive, midfield

and goalkeeping duties. Luis

Suarez has done more

goalkeeping duties for his

country than Ronaldo! And

Messi often plays deep, sets

up assists, which is the job of

the midfielder.

And as for Xavi and Iniesta,

well, doesn’t Ronaldo have

Ozil and Higuain? Again, both

players purchased, while

Barcelona created theirs. The

joke is on you, FAKE Real

Madrid fans. Also, if you think

a team consisting of the likes

of Pepe, Ramos, Di Maria,

Casillas, Alonso etc. is

negligible compared to

Ronaldo, you need to get your

eyesight checked.

In conclusion, dear fans, if

you cannot swallow a bitter

pill, I think you should quit

watching football. This world

of football is better off

without the glory hunters. We

do not need ‘fans’ who cannot

appreciate good football.

BOTH ARE MAGNIFICENT

PLAYERS, EQUALLY GOOD. I

bet 99% of Messi haters don’t

even know why they hate him.

And I’m sure a lot of Ronaldo

fans will bite me, but then

again, they will only prove

what I said: They are all fakes,

glory hunters.

Crime / Bizzare: Woman Set ablaze By Jealous husband by NoiseMaker1: 11:24am On Jan 09, 2013
Four months after 39-
year-old Janet Odhegba
was set on fire by her
jealous husband, Kehinde
Adesanmoye, in Ikotun,
Lagos State, she has yet
to fully recover from the
burns she sustained after
the incident.
ablaze
At the moment, paying
her medical bills is a
great challenge.
Adesanmoye had on
September 11, 2012,
around 10pm allegedly
poured petrol on
Odhegba and set her
ablaze at the Ikotun
Roundabout, Lagos,
where she worked as a
food vendor.
Adesanmoye is currently
facing criminal charges
before an Ejigbo
Magistrate’s Court.
Odhegba allegedly drew
the ire of Adesanmoye
the previous day after
taking a wine offered to
her by one of her male
customers at a party
where he (Adesanmoye)
also attended.
The victim said her
relations and community
association members
who had hitherto
contributed money for
her medical treatment
said they could no longer
afford to foot her
medical bills.
She said they were
contemplating an out-of-
court settlement with
Adesanmoye so that he
could take responsibility
for her treatment.
Odhegba said, “Life has
not been the same with
me since the incident I
suffered in the hands of
my estranged husband
and I have yet to fully
recover.
“More worrisome is the
fact that my relations
and my township
association members are
mounting pressure on me
to embrace an out-of-
court settlement with
him.
“This is premised on the
fact that they have been
stretched to the limit in
terms of assisting me
financially. They have
really tried because I
don’t know if I would
have survived it without
their help.
“But, I don’t like the idea
of the settlement
because I really want him
to face the full wrath of
the law for the inhumane
treatment and assault he
meted out to me.”
According to a medical
report signed by Dr.
Kupoluyi Oluwatobi, the
medical officer-in-charge
of the private hospital
where she was being
treated, Odhegba needs
to undergo a “split skin
grafting by a plastic
surgeon for complete
wound healing.”
Odhegba said since she
was discharged from the
hospital because of her
inability to pay the bills,
adding that she had been
using different
traditional methods to
aid the healing process.
She said, “I now adopt
traditional methods for
treating the wounds
based on advice since I
cannot afford hospital
bills.
“The wound on my left
hand has made my
muscles to go stiff and I
can no longer hold
things.
“Apart from the skin
grafting, doctors have
also recommended that a
team of physiotherapists
need to work on me for
the purpose of
rehabilitation. I wish
Nigerians could help me
so that I won’t be forced
to withdraw the case on
lack of finance.”
Her mother, Mary, said
she had spent everything
she had to make her
daughter normal again.
“I have sold all my
property back in my
village in Ozoro, Delta
State. Since I moved to
Lagos to oversee her
welfare, all the crops I
cultivated to earn a living
have been completely
destroyed. There is no
source of getting money
from anywhere again,”
she lamented.

Nairaland / General / It Has Been Confirmed, facebook Will End On january 15th, 2013! ? by NoiseMaker1: 11:19am On Jan 04, 2013
Mark Zuckerberg announced
that Facebook will be shut down
in January of 2013. Managing

the site has become too

stressful. “Facebook has gotten
out of control,” reportedly said Zuckerberg in a press

conference outside his Palo Alto
office, “and the stress of
managing this company has
ruined my life. I need to put an

end to all the madness.” Zuckerberg reportedly went on
to explain that starting
January 15th, users will no
longer be able to access their
Facebook accounts. That gives
users (and Facebook addicts)a year to adjust to live without
Facebook. “After January 15th,2013 the
whole Facebook website will

shut down,” said Avrat

Humarthi, Vice President of
Technical Affairs at Facebook.
“So if you ever want to see your pictures again, I recommend

you take them off the internet.

You won’t be able to get them
back after Facebook goes out of
business.” Zuckerberg said the decision to
shut down Facebook was
difficult, but that he does not
think people will be upset. “I

personally don’t think it’s a big
deal,” he said in a private phone interview to a source close to a

friend. “And to be honest, I

think it’s for the better. Without
Facebook, people will have to
go outside and make real
friends. That’s always a good thing.”
