• Says ‘I Won’t Pay Redundant Workers’

• Pledges To Redress Damage On Economy By NLC Strike

Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai has pledged to redress the damages done by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on the state’s economy during its five-day warning strike, insisting that Government was not in a position to pay redundant workers.

El-Rufai, in a radio broadcast at the weekend, commended Federal Government for its effort to intervene in the logjam between Labour and the State Government. He also thanked citizens for their resilience during the strike period.

He said: “I address you, today, on behalf of the Kaduna State Government to thank you for your resilience in the face of sustained assault on your rights, freedoms, and livelihoods by the NLC over the previous four days.

“We appreciate the calm response by our citizens to NLC’s unwarranted provocation, lawlessness, and denial of essential services. We thank our traditional, community and religious leaders, who helped to manage the strong feelings of our people against the needless pain imposed on them.

“Kaduna Government wishes to express its regrets that such lawlessness was permitted by those with the duty to prevent it. We sympathise with all our citizens for the denial of electricity for four days and the persistent attempt to disrupt normal life and prevent government offices, hospitals, banks, and other private businesses from functioning. The laws of our country do not allow anyone to shutdown essential services. The right to strike does not include licence to violate public and private facilities or to shut them down in any way.

“Persons on strike can withdraw from the facilities where they are working, but they are not allowed to stop those facilities from functioning. As your government, we will pursue accountability for the crimes that have been committed and seek remedies for our people…”

He explained that the state Government has done a lot for the welfare of workers, including payment of the minimum wage, pension, and other entitlements of civil servants.

“Many states are yet to pay these wages, while some that began paying have reversed it. But it is the state that is consistently paying that the NLC came to sabotage. We will not become a state that only pays salary, and no amount of pressure will change that. We are a state that believes in progress and development, and we will continue to prioritise this…”

All this King Kong behaviour ends when the breathe of life ends. At such stage u can't threaten anyone, so why behave like a short god? Well, since his height is already downsized, he feels the work force should be as well.

You paid them all these years when oil money was coming in and only realized they were redundant when oil money inflow dwindled. He is clueless about how to inspire the state economy growth.

chrisblack:
let us be true to ourselves. Many states don't need the numbers of workers on its payroll. We can never develop as a country when 85% of some states revenue is used in paying salaries of less than2% of the population. It makes not sense. Many of the civil servants are redundant. In so department you would see 5people doing the work of 1 person. It also like that at the federal where due to tribal sentiments they have loaded it with there people. With technology we don't need bulky civil service. More funds should be made available for stimulating the economy through provision of grants, infrastructure , Agricultural support etc that would help the entire populace. There should be a law that stipulate 65 to 35% in terms in favour of capital to recurrent cost. And that all employment must be shared across all nooks and crannies of a state evenly.

Stop replying to your own subconscious imaginations. It makes you look deranged. I never supported paying of idle hands. I pointed out the fact that el rufai has been paying them willingly all along when crude income was higher. Why is he(El Rufai) just realizing all the off point stuff you are writing to me?

AnanseK:

So he should pay unproductive workers? You are so illogical blinded by hate.
I think it is wrong to pay people for doing nothing. There are rules for compensating redundant workers and he should follow the rules but not keep paying them salaries when they are doing nothing.
Another deranged one I guess. Why did he pay them for years before realizing that they are redundant? Why?

Basher8583:

Would you keep redundant staff in your payroll if it were your personal business?

People like you on Nairaland are quite unintelligent
Derangee No 3.
If I have redundant workers under me, I wouldnt have pretended not to have seen them since 2015.

Downsizing workers when the rate of unemployment is already high and is getting worse.

Do these people want Nigerians dead before they can see that people are really suffering in this nation?

If most governors would be bold to do what this man intends to do, there would be increase in productivity among the workforce.
How do people feel when the get paid for doing nothing?
Let me see the first nincompoop who would quote me just to disgrace his family.

The money he and his family spend in a month can build the whole road in kaduna state

What goes around comes around...

You used NLC to protest against GEJ in 2012.

Suddenly protest has become illegal in 2021.

You said someone sponsored The NLC to distabilise your state, who sponsored you to distabilise Nigeria in 2012?

Oga Nasir enjoy the fruits of your labor of 2012 and stop chasing shadows.

The universe does not go to sleep.

Tax payers’ money is now spoken as though sb’s investment.

I agree, there are many redundant workers.

But didn't redundancy start from the National Assembly and the gigantic salaries of heads of government?

sad

While I agree with him that state money should not be used to pay for redundancy, I'd ask that he takes it a notch further, and ensure that those civil servants he intends retrenching get other employment and start paying taxes to the state. In other words, he should raise his IGR, because oil money from the south should not be used to pay for Kaduna's expenses.
Oil money should be spent only on crucial national activities like defence, security, and not for states to share. Same with gold mining revenue, solid minerals etc. Leave them for their owners to administer while they pay a fraction to the FG.

If he goes that way, we will believe he is an honest leader.

Though NLC herself preaches one thing and act the other way, El rufai should understand that it would be impossible to win this battle with Labour. Currently the law is in NLC’s favor. The government has the right to hire and fire. But it must be done in concomitant to the law of the land.
