It is pure cultural dance with masquerade, somewhere in Nsukka,we use to have cultural Sunday, each village or zones present one cultural exhibition which includes masquerade, such a Adamma masquerade ,ordinary dance.but no juju involved.

So, the masquerades that show up are not there as representatives of spirits and local gods? undecided

You mean a masquerade can strip even those off itself - the spirits and gods of its identity? undecided

To an Israelite, Jesus is an ancestor. So belief in Jesus must be juju to him, I suppose?

The same spirit in Father Christmas attire. Who do Africa this thing? Now, I can understand why the white man regards the black man as an inferior being.

1. Israelites probably don't consider Jesus Christ in that light given many of them deny Him. undecided

2. To me though, Jesus Christ is God's Law which I live by so every other idea of god out there is technically "juju" to me. So, you would never find me trying to, even in the name of the God I chose to serve, attempting to appease any juju. undecided

Well, last I checked it is a human being dressed in Father Xmas costume, not a spirit. And folks approach the costume man believing just that. undecided

Isn't the major problem that you seem to put so much stake into what the white man thinks of you as a black man? undecided

If you think your Jesus is different from Baal, fix a date let's head to Igbobi to perform the Elijah's test:

You call on your Jesus to heal an amputatee right there in our presence. If he doesn't heal the amputatee, we can conclude he's not different from Baal then.

You cannot excuse him by saying "it's not his will at that moment; he answers when he feels like" because Elijah never cared if it's Baal's will to send down fire at that moment when he's testing Baal's prophets!

Once I saw the headline, I knew It could only happen in a Catholic Church. In my community during the yuletide celebration when I was a kid, if you were being pursued by a masquerade, you don't run into my village Catholic church because the masquerade will catch up with you inside the church. Rather you run into any church that doesn't permit a masquerade entrance.

Why an Elijah test for Jesus Christ? I am sorry but I dont even understand the logic or reason behind any of what you proclaim...why again are we trying to test Jesus Christ? undecided

And you think it's a spirit that wears the masquerade costume? SMH for your naivety.

"And folks approach the costume man believing just that."

Now, they're trying to show you that masquerade is nothing but a costume by allowing people dances with it freely in close proximity, and you still complain.

It's not a matter of what the white man thinks of you. It's about the black man's naivety and a mindset devoid of rational thinking. It seems the black man lacks the ability to think.

It's the same reason he follows any charlatan that tells him what he wants to hear — be that person a pastor, babalawo, scammer, politician, etc. All these people exploit that same trait!

The why is in your number 2 point: trying to prove that Jesus is different from what you term "juju"

Jesus is just one more deified ancestor — this time, of Jewish origin! If you think he's different from Baal, prove it! It's just that simple. Not a blind belief.

1. Last I checked, masquerades are more to do with the spirits and gods they represent than the men who dorn the costumes. In fact, in many cases, there are preparation rituals undergone by those who dorn those masquerades to ready them to wear the semblance of the spirits or gods in question.

2. It seems you are yourself struggling with your identity as an individual since you seem to care so much of the meaningless. First you lampooned the black man for what you assumed was the "white man" thinking of him, now you lampoon the black man for not thinking as rationally like, let me guess,
the "whiteman" . undecided

People who are out of points resort to personal attacks. I'm more than that. Try again!

Back to the point: You said earlier that juju is a belief in ancestors. But Jesus whom you profess is also an ancestor — a Jewish ancestor!

Whether you call him law or whatever you want, you can't change the fact that he's a deified ancestor.

So, if you think that this particular ancestor has powers, unlike others, you have to prove it. If there's no demonstrable evidence that he's different from other ancestors, then there's nothing special about him!

I believe in God, Jesus Christ is His Law. Sure, you could claim Jesus Christ is an ancestor to the Israelites but since I am not an israelite, He obviously does not qualify as an ancestor to me. undecided

So? undecided

I forgot to address this: Masquerades and their costumes are normal African culture. There are no spirits there. All the abracadabra they display to inspire awe are simply part of the culture. They're not different from Father Christmas that dresses up behind the stage but they tell you that he is from the North Pole and all the rest to inspire importance or whatever they want to inspire.

Well, then we don't have the same exposure as far as masquerades and their costumes in Africa then. undecided

From what I know of them, they are not to be confused with men in ordinary costumes and are not to be compared with a man wearing a Father xmas costume in any way of form. undecided
In most African culture, they are representatives of gods or spirits. undecided

You said ancestors are juju.

But said a particular Jewish ancestor is different; in fact, that he's the Law. Moreover, that he's not an ancestor to you since you are not Jewish. So, he doesn't not qualify as juju since he's not your direct ancestor (Though, we have both agreed that he's an ancestor).

I asked what made this ancestor different or special that you call him the law. If he has any special powers, you should prove it!

Then, addressing the fact that you regard him highly for not being your ancestor, I pointed out that there are other ancestors that are regarded by non natives. An example is Krishna, who's an Indian ancestor but also regarded by non Indians. If those non natives call Krishna the law, does that make Krishna the law?

My point is, whichever ancestor you regard so highly, you should prove why he's superior to other ancestors! If you say Jesus, a Jewish ancestor, is the Law, prove to me why and how he's superior to other ancestors! Then, I proposed a test similar to what Elijah used to prove that his God was superior to Baal. If you are ready for that test, I will be very happy to witness it.

While I'm not here to defend the church and the manner they chose to do their inculturation or celebrate their cultural heritage, this could be their reason for choosing to do it inside their Church building:

They understood that their people have this juju-based fear towards masquerade. They understood that their people believe that their God is most powerful and the church building is his domain. In other words, their most powerful God can defend them from whatever power the masquerade supposedly has. So, they chose to do their cultural thing inside the church to allay the fear of masquerade and have them play with it in the presence of their most powerful God that can protect them from their fears!
