I think you are misconceiving the word "TRAIN"

Essentially these are train cars/carriages/coaches
They can be deployed for intercity or intercity with modifications as required

It is you who has missed the point.
Those trains were originally designed for high-speed links.

Tell me, are we going to have different types of trains on each of the metro lines planned?
A high TCO because Sanwo-Olu decided to go shopping for mismatched technologies? cool

Hmmm.... Lagos now has the fastest train in Africa. Really? ... is it a must for us to beat our chest?... even about something we do not have? ... and we wonder why the politicians always be selling us dreams.
Re: The City Of Lagos Now Has The Fastest Trains In Africa - Business Insider by Nauttyprof(m): 1:04pm On Jan 22, 2022
This is a big shame on the FG on the slow motion they spent billions of Naira to deploy as trains despite borrow so much from China and a conceited minister will be acting as if he is above everybody and won't show responsibility by answering questions based on performance and loan gotten. A state in Nigeria is doing things better than the FG.

This is really so sad.

Mr Patriot, those trains were originally designed as inter-city trains and not for mass transportation through built-up areas. Geddit?
How much overspend is involved here? sad
Who says the journey between two cities cannot be in "built up areas" .
Travel from Birmingham to Wolverhamptom , Coventry etc it is all built up
I really do not know what you mean by "NOT for Mass" transportation.
Who says inter city transport is not mass transportation.
If you travel on trains in UK sometimes they are so crowded you could go for hours with no seat in crowded coaches with people sitting on the floor in spaces between coaches. I am talking routes from London to Milton Keynes
Manchester to Birmingham etc

That idea that they were "designed" for this and not for that is YOUR opinion. It is the number of services that determines how efficient /crowdedthese things are.

But Birmingham and Wolverhampton are cities sir - hence the need for an inter-city traingrin
Please tell me what cities in the Lagos Metropolitan Area this high-speed train is going to service.

P.S - I think you are using the term "built-up area" rather loosely here.

They were intended for use in a high speed service that is

True
That is very different from "they were designed for"
and different from "they were designed exclusively for" as you are assuming and asserting without evidence

That statement that they were "designed for" what does that mean exactly?
The fact that a thing is designed for one use does not mean it is designed
FOR THAT USE ONLY
The idea of mismatched technology is an assumption
What are the specific details of that "mismatch"
There is no evidence for that .

The reality is that all modern train cars whether intended for high speed use or not are designed for used with Overhead equipment and Pantograph technology
That does not mean they cannot be used with diesel engine locomotives with adaptation in countries that do not have electricity

This s akin to saying a pot was designed for use with gas but not kerosene or
lighters can only be used to light cigarettes.
The onus is on you to substantiate

My people shall never fail to disappoint. Why such a high-powered engine for a short distance?

Because you’re shortsighted doesn’t mean everyone should be. In the future integration of South-West states, this is a beginning of a blessing. I’m an indigene of Lagos but the economic benefit of this project is when its penetrates the SW states. Imagine the metro fast train competing with Federal owned for commuters just like in the USA. It drives down the ticket price and Lagos metro can reach more places in South-West than the FG which is just a line across states of the nation.

Lagos will reap bountifully if well managed. You can find and read DAWN integration plan.

You are changing the subject
Let us be clear what we are disagreeing on
The point s that Birmingham and Wolverhamptom
ARE CONTIGUOUS
What is speciffic to the design that makes trains for intercity different from innercity

You are introducing terminology of Lagos Metropolitan area whose definition is known only to you

Lagos is a state with several towns/cities that are contiguous. SO if you want to talk of Lagos Metropolitan area talk of greater birmingham

Those are tangential issues

The point is DESIGN

There is nothing specific to design that says trains used for inter city cannot be used for intra city
It might not be appropriate the other way round I agree.

Your argument is like saying
The so called luxury buses cannot be used for inner city transport. I would say they can be used on BRT lanes for medium distance journeys

No I am not using it loosely

Many cties like Bolton. Manchester, Salford often are contiguous and coalesce into a Greater Manchester, Greater Birmingham conurbation

We have seen that with Greater London historically and in what Lagos State too
Ikeja To Surulere has not always been contiguous or built up

In fact Ikeja was under the Western Region until Lagos State was created and it was not the original capital of Lagos State

At no point did I say these trains cannot run on metro-lines.
My quibble is that we are celebrating high-speed trains which actually need to be repurposed grin

Come on now, sir, there is no need to invent a strawman argument when my bones of contention are:
(1) Mismatched technologies
Note: since that train has a bar, I bet it has rest rooms as well.
(2) Possible overspend (admittedly this I need to verify further).
(3) Total cost of ownership (TCO) over the long term.

There are Fast Train links usually trains travelling further on e.g Newcastle coming from london and stopping at Birmingham Wolverhampton etc
There are also trains restricted to the West midlands between the two cities using the same track but completely different carriage design, slower with several more stops

AND
There is a Metro/Tram line with several more in between stops So that inner city inter city argument fails you have 3 different types of carriages connecting the two cities

I concede that I no longer have a leg to stand on as far as my argument about "cities" goes cry
Lagos does have a number of cities just as you stated.

1 Lagos[a] Lagos 8,048,430 1,171.3 6,871
13 Ikorodu Lagos 535,619 345 1,553
- Ikeja Lagos 313,196 49.92 6,274
42 Badagry Lagos 241,093 441 547

i do not disagree with most of what you say
If you follow what I have been saying on this thread
but I suspect that you do not really understand what high speed rail is about and that is why you are talking of mismatch

So I suggest you read up on Pantographs

Virtually all trains in the UK use pantographs but there is no high speed ail except for the one linked to Eurotunnel
Those same trains can be used with modification in Nigeria and that is what will happen with these carriages from America
Re: The City Of Lagos Now Has The Fastest Trains In Africa - Business Insider by BlackBaron: 1:54pm On Jan 22, 2022
There's speculations that these train sets aren't the most appropriate fit for inner city transportation.

The fastest trains in Africa are actually in Morocco.
