An average worker in Lagos spends at least 4 hours in traffic every day. This amounts to 20 hours a week and about 1,000 hours in a year. That’s a lot of hours that could be invested. Thus, my question this morning is how much of this time are you investing?

Let me introduce to you a concept I called Return-on -Traffic-Time®. Most of us are familiar with financial ratios such as returns on sales, returns on capital employed etc. but how can you evaluate returns on time spent in traffic?

Return-on -Traffic-Time® = Number of hours spent on personal development / Total number of hours spent in Traffic

Like any productivity ratio, the best return will be achieved by maximizing the numerator while minimizing the denominator. Let’s focus on the numerator because it will cost some money to minimize the denominator.

Let’s say you read or listen to a book/podcast for 1 hour out of the 4-hour traffic time, your return is 25%. Doing this will also reduce the time spent in traffic to 3 hours at no cost to you. Now Imagine investing 2 or 3 hours daily!

Almost 50% of the time I spent studying for my MBA was in traffic. There was even an exam I wrote inside traffic. Moving closer to work is the perfect solution but if you can’t afford that for now, you may want to consider having a sound Return-on -Traffic-Time®.

Do have a great week.

And people wonder why they are always broke in Lagos. Four hours in traffic daily, two hours to recover the stress at home

I have seen many post on NL job section asking if they should choose lagos or remain in their current location, hence the need to do a write up about Lagos traffic

I give to those guys that are already use to it. That thing scared me like monster.

Anxiety will not even let me assimilate anything I am reading coupled with the boozing sound that will send endless cacophonies all over my head.

Sometimes my mind gets so noisy I can't even read in the library.

Alimosho ke! Ordinary Ojodu Berger to Ikeja bus stop na die.

It is always a battle going and returning from work.

Na Lagos give me this wait at the bar and have some drinks till the traffic goes down and now that I am in Port Harcourt it has not been easy fighting such dirty habit.

The only way the traffic madness in Lagos can go down is to decentralise development in Nigeria. Nigeria is terribly planned.

Only God knows how terrible Lagos traffic would have been if Babangida hadn't moved the capital of Nigeria to Abuja.

In other words, almost all non-indigenes living in Abuja today would have been struggling for space in Lagos which is even the smallest state in the country.

Not me cos I choose the area I work.

So far, the areas I go for my biz are not always congested. 10 to 15 mins Max, I'm at work. That's for places that I use transportation. Others are a walking distance. 5 mins walk, I'm there.

A time comes in ones life where one chooses when and how they work. Everyone should strive to get to that stage.

This days, It's all about working smart by the help and grace of God.

As at 2015 Lagos population was 15 millions, in 2022 it is around 23 millions. This is about 5 countries population from another angle. And the landmass is a little over 3000 square meter. The population density is outrageous and too much for a smallest state like Lagos. The infrastructure will quickly worn out, the pressure will be too much.

Every other states need to wake up, Lagos is carrying the burden of over 30 states in the country. If anything should ever happen to Lagos, then Nigeria is in trouble. Reason we can't give someone who never had a record of managing 100 people on a positive project to test run his capacity.

Unfortunately, only APC can still produce the Cheif Executive Officer of the state because they already have a structure that build the leadership capacity of the next successor of every current governor.

Lagos must not fail
Lagos must triumph
And Lagos remain a Yoruba Land.

Honestly speaking, a lot of companies need to look into hybrid work.
One of the positive results from the COVID 19 pandemic was that it showed us that not all jobs need to be performed physically.

If a lot of companies implement remote work for at least twice a week it will greatly reduce the traffic especially between the mainland and island.
