The Minister of Defence, Mohammed Abubakar and the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, are currently in Turkey to facilitate the speedy delivery of the T-129 ATAK helicopters acquired for the Nigeria Air Force, by the Federal Government.

The minister held talks with his Turkish counterpart, Lt. Gen. Yasar Guler (Rtd.) on critical bilateral and defence cooperation issues.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Sunday by the Director, Public Relations and Information, NAF, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet.

The statement stated that Guler, on behalf of the Turkish military, assured the minister to assist in the fight against terrorism and other criminal challenges facing the country.

Gabkwet noted, “The minister and the CAS also visited some selected Turkish companies including Turkish Aerospace Industries, MKE, Aselsan, and Roketsan. These companies are among the highly-rated global defence companies renowned for the production of quality defence and military equipment.

“While at these companies, the HMOD called for improved synergy between the companies and Nigeria through the transfer of defence technology to Nigeria.”

“The FG had procured six T-129 ATAK helicopters from the TIA, out of which two are to be delivered to the NAF in the coming weeks. The remaining are expected before the end of the second quarter of 2024.”

I just want to ask a simple question.

Can't the Nigeria military buy new modern helicopters like the likes of

Bell AH-1z viper
Apache Guardian.
They have the money to finance these new modern beasts.

Buying 10 F16 jet fighters, plus 10 Apache helicopters, would eat all our defence budget, plus part of future defence budget.

Shey you know that years of borrowing, years of low income and so on have made us too broke to do anything?

Then if they get shot out of the sky and destroyed , how do we replace them, plus running costs are going to add up?

Even this one we are buying....it is a effing risk.

What do you think the Tucano jets are for?

Plus we need better counter-insurgency units, not the latest flashy toy.

It’s very clear tinubu don’t know anything about modern governors. Nigeria need young candidates not all these old fellas

They are bringing outdated helicopter.

That was introduced into service in the year 2014, and is still in service.

For comparison, the Apache helicopter was introduced in 1986.

Not quite outdated.

Okay, let's all pay the tax to make it possible. 50% of your and every adult's income.

Like they do in sane countries that can afford that stuff.

If you hear the prices of those planes you think you will still want Nigeria to buy them.

Very Naive of you to think America will sell their apex equipments to a country like Nigeria, even if we have the money to buy. F -15, 16 and the likes are only sold to NATO members or countries with special Military alliance with the US.

Some people just like to dey comment foolishly. We buy based on our current need, f35 or whatever doesn't suit the kind of challenges Nigeria is currently facing, we need something that can stay in the air for longer period of time plus we are not facing any immediate threat of air invasion for now. Secondly America won't sell most of their planes without stripping them of some advance tech.

Which sane country pays 50% income tax

Last I checked fed and state tax isn't more than 30% in US

All Islamic countries are tax free

1. One Bell AH1z copter costs 450 million. 10 would cost 4.5 billion dollars.

Nigeria's defence budget...1.97 billion dollars.

2.Apache 52million. 10 of those babies..520 billion.

Nigeria's defence budget ...1.97 billion dollars..(Okay we can afford)...of which...1.2 billion goes to personell costs...so mayyybe.(BUT...we have to pay for barracks, regular weaponry, running costs for existing ordnace, plus navy and army needs new stuff too...
