A Plea for Consideration: Halting the Increase in Telecom Tariff Charges Author: Abdullahi Musa Yaro As Nigeria faces economic challenges and strives towards technological advancement, the recent announcement by the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) regarding a potential increase in telecom tariff charges is a cause for concern. It is crucial to emphasize the importance of affordable and accessible communication services, particularly considering the current economic situation that Nigerians are enduring. In this article, we make a heartfelt plea to ALTON to reconsider this decision and take into account the hardships faced by the Nigerian populace. The Significance of Affordable Telecom Services Telecommunications services have become an integral part of our daily lives, connecting individuals, businesses, and communities across the globe. In Nigeria, the telecom sector has played a pivotal role in fostering economic growth, promoting social inclusion, and driving innovation. However, it is vital to strike a balance between sustaining the telecom sector's growth and ensuring that the services remain affordable and accessible to all. The Current Economic Landscape Nigeria, like many other nations, is grappling with economic challenges. The COVID-19 pandemic, coupled with inflationary pressures, unemployment, and reduced purchasing power, has placed a significant burden on the Nigerian people. Many citizens are struggling to make ends meet, and any further increase in telecom tariffs would exacerbate their financial hardships. The Role of Telecommunications in Economic Development Affordable and accessible telecommunications services are essential for fostering economic development. They enable businesses to thrive, attract investments, drive innovation, and create employment opportunities. By increasing telecom tariffs, we risk impeding the growth and progress of various sectors of the economy, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which are the backbone of Nigeria's economy. Digital Inclusion and Socioeconomic Impact Nigeria has made commendable progress in bridging the digital divide and promoting digital inclusion. However, any increase in telecom tariffs would hinder these efforts. As we strive towards achieving a digitally inclusive society, it is crucial to make communication services accessible to all, especially marginalized communities, rural areas, and economically disadvantaged individuals. Telecom services have the power to uplift communities, provide access to critical information, and enhance education, healthcare, and governance systems. ALTON's Role in Nurturing Sustainable Growth As the representative body for licensed telecommunications operators in Nigeria, ALTON plays a vital role in shaping the future of the sector. It is essential for ALTON to consider the long-term consequences of increasing telecom tariff charges. Sustainable growth must be prioritized over short-term gains. By maintaining affordable tariffs, ALTON can contribute to the overall well-being of Nigerians, foster social inclusion, and promote economic stability. Seeking a Collaborative Approach We understand the challenges faced by ALTON and the need to maintain a sustainable telecom sector. However, we appeal to the association to adopt a collaborative approach that takes into account the current economic realities of Nigerians. Rather than burdening the populace with increased tariffs, we encourage ALTON to explore alternative solutions, such as cost optimization, operational efficiency, and innovative revenue models. In conclusion, we implore ALTON to reconsider its decision to increase telecom tariff charges. The current economic situation in Nigeria demands compassion, empathy, and a commitment to the well-being of the people. By maintaining affordable and accessible telecom services, ALTON can contribute to Nigeria's socioeconomic development and foster digital inclusion. Let us work together towards a brighter future, where telecommunications services continue to empower Nigerians, bridge the digital divide, and drive economic growth. It is our hope that ALTON will heed this plea and prioritize the interests of the Nigerian people, considering the hardships they are currently enduring. By embracing a collaborative approach and exploring alternative strategies, we can ensure that the telecom sector remains sustainable while safeguarding the affordability and accessibility of essential communication services. In these challenging times, unity and empathy are crucial. Let us stand together in advocating for fair and affordable telecom tariffs, enabling every Nigerian to stay connected, informed, and empowered. About the Author: Abdullahi Musa Yaro is a passionate advocate for affordable and accessible communication services. With a deep understanding of the role of telecommunications in socioeconomic development, he believes in the power of technology to bridge gaps and empower communities. Abdullahi is committed to fostering inclusivity and ensuring that the voices of ordinary Nigerians are heard in shaping policies that affect their lives. treesun: 1 Share

but 52 taxes on a single business is too much, how do they expect the business to survive in this hostile economic period ? lol. emilokan want to triple the national IGR as he claimed to have done in Lagos state years ago, without realizing that the national economy was stable then than now. Oga Bubu's government had just finished messing up the national economy, and now we have a sick economy which had not recovered, the next thing is to be over-taxing businesses struggling for survival, the resultant effect is deaths of the businesses with very few surviving ones to be taxed. This emilokan government must encourage businesses to survive, instead of shutting down and more unemployment's rates in Nigeria. |

Abolodje: Let them show the 52- ways they are taxed! These days, you load Mtn Data and immediately, your phone says 300 MB has been used, for something you just load less than 3-minutes! What is wrong with our Telecommunication,as nobody is checking them! Our National Assembly have forgotten their Oversight Functions because of Corruption! We saw this during Hon Elumelu Power Committee then! |
