That can only be possible if he as more C's that can be converted into B's, cos during my own case i have lot of B's which they can only convert to B+. i wish him the best.

Don't forget that if he had more Cs than Bs as you said, he would definitely have gotten a much lower GPA than what he has. I guess his number of Bs and Cs are fairly almost the same with your own.

3.08 CGPA WILL never go below 3.0/4.0 on the 4-point scale. 3.08(or approximately 3.10) isn't much different from 3.20, likewise the 4-point CGPA won't be much lower than yours. Definitely not below 3.0/4.0.

Let him go ahead and convert it, let's see.

Your 4.0 CGPA(which will fall somewhere between 3.4/4.0 to 3.50/4.0) coupled with a strong GRE score(somewhere around 310), strong letters of recommendation, and an excellent SOP could get you an assistantship in average schools in the US. Top-notch schools will require outstanding and stellar records from you. cool
noted Bro!! Thanks!!
Am going to add Canadian schools too! I Can't shout angry grin

Morning bro. Howdy?

Yea. The 4.0 was over 5 point(our Naija scale). Ie 4.0/5.0. Look at Electronic's post. I know someone who his CGPA was 4.10/5.0 and after conversion to the US 4-point scale, his new CGPA was 3.53/4.0.

The 3.08 was also over 5 points which on the 4-point scale will fall around 3.0/4.0 (+ or - 0.02 error margin). My friend who graduated with 3.12/5.0, converted his CGPA to the US 4-point scale and his new CGPA was 3.05/4.0. 3.08 will therefore fall around that 3.0/4.0 margin. smiley

So you see, I'm making fairly accurate pro-rated estimations. smiley

Hey there, hope you're getting set for classes?

So do you mean if someone has upper division on 5 point scale, the conversion takes significant effects than does for someone with lower division? Well, all his 4 and 6 unit hours when converted to 2 credit hours will have effects on the CGPA. The new grade ranking always has effects on 5.0 scale. I have some As, many Bs, few Cs, 1 D and 1 E but the conversion was fairly ok in my case.

I'd like him to give us feedback after his conversion but I'm affirmative that he is going down below 3.0

Yea. Sure I'm getting set for classes. Can't wait to show 'em indians Naija pepper. grin

I see this CGPA conversion thing is really confusing. Each 5 point-scale GPA has its own equivalent on the 4-point scale. As the 5-point GPA reduces so does the 4-point GPA. And no, the credit units are not reduced or increased during conversion. The only things changed are the grades and grade units.

For eg, FOR WES translation,
our A is their A = 4 points.
Our B is their B+ = 3.5 points.
Our C is B = 3.0 points.
Our D is C+ = 2.5 points.
Our E is their C = 2.0 points and
Our F is F = 0.

For WES' conversion list, there are no Ds and Es on their US 4-point scale. All our Ds and Es are converted to C+ and C respectively thus adding extra points to the person's equivalent new CGPA. That's why WES is considered the best.

Now, the higher the CGPA, the lower the add in extra points to the final because the 5-point GPA is likely to have more As, Bs and Cs than Ds and Es(the very two which add extra points to the overall). And the lower the CGPA the more the add in possible points from Ds and Es because the person's transcripts is likely to have more Ds and Es than the first example, thus adding a little more points to the person's 4-point CGPA since the many Ds and Es will be converted to higher C+ and C.

I'll give you a quick break down of Naija GPAs I've seen converted by WES to the 4-Point scale so you can quickly place for yourself where 3.08/5.0 will land.

Nigeria. US
4.10/5.0. 3.53/4.0
4.08/5.0. 3.52/4.0
3.73/5.0. 3.37/4.0
3.68/5.0. 3.29/4.0(Your own conversion. wink
3.20/5.0. 3.06/4.0(Kunle's conversion)
3.12/5.0. 3.05/4.0
2.99/5.0. 2.99/4.0
2.33/5.0. 2.50/4.0

Look above and see the linear relationship. Notice the falling pattern of the 5-point scale and its equivalent falling pattern on the 4-point scale. Its a linear relationship. Now look at the scale and estimate the range 3.08/5.0 on 4-point scale will fall on? Your guess is as good as mine.

@Kunle: remember when you sent in your transcripts to WES for evaluation and you were waiting for it to come out, I told you on bbm that your new CGPA will between 3.05 to 3.10? And when it came out and it was 3.06? You told me when it came out and remember I told you I wasn't surprised that knew it would fall within that range. This was because before then my friend who had 3.12/5.0 had converted his own and got 3.05/4.0. And because your own 5-point scale CGPA, 3.20/5.0 was higher than his 3.12/5.0, I definitely knew your 4-point equivalent will be higher than the 3.05/4.0 which my friend got.

Likewise, 3.08/5.0 will be lower than 3.05/4.0 but won't fall below 3.0/4.0 since 2.99/5.0 fell on 2.99/4.0. The range will be between (3.0 to 3.05)/4.0.

Observe that its a linear ratio thing. I guess the confusion comes from the fact that the CGPA 3.08/5.0 is second class lower and its 4-point equivalent, 3.0/4.0 is considered second class upper on the 4-point scale. That's how it is. Kunle's 3.20/5.0 is second class lower but also turned out to be 3.06 which is higher than 3.0/4.0 and which is second class upper on the 4-point scale.

3.08/5.0 isn't much different from 3.20/5.0 and should give something close to Kunle's 4-point 3.06/4.0 in accordance to the law of linearity and mathematics. Hence, I don't expect such a huge downward plunge in the new CGPA equivalent, such as 2.5/4.0 to 2.60/4.0 as Kunle projected.

About the Indians, they are easy to sway but they work in group and cheat and that could make it harder for one to break them

@the conversion from wes website, but don't forgot there is also US range for those grades.

lolz@my conversion, then I need to ask WES for refund.

@the subject's CGPA, I'm still waiting for him and hope he comes feeding us back.

However, for me, there was no misconception about the upper division or lower since such isn't used here (just asking question about effects of conversion on upper and lower division). They use c. um laude system for higher honors which put even 3.49 nowhere around the top three CGPA ranges let alone 3.0.

US system is

c. um laude (3.80-4.00)
magna c. um laude (3.65-3.79)
summa c. um laude (3.50-3.64)

3.0 is the entry CGPA considered to be minimum for an averagely ok student. And this shouldn't be mistaken for British upper/lower division.

During d course of interview d VO asked for my SAT and TOEFL result but cud not provide it, reason being that d school I applied for waived it for me bcuz I had GPA above 2.5 so I did not kia to write it. After d whole stuff I was given a leaflet and after reading it all I cud hold was that I don't have a strong tie.

So now, have sat for d toefl and scored 71 and want to apply again. The question now is can I change one or two things frm what I used initially, then also can I claim am working? Having it in mind that initially I claim I was not working reason being that I want to focus my education serious. Pls kindly help am seriously confused

Its very commendable that you wrote a standardized test. Its a common reason used by VOs to deny people. Go to the embassy with it.

The VOs don't like to hear that you're idle except you got a cogent reason for that. Working experience is important.
