midastouch: Hello Friends, I sincerely hope that this thread will not degenerate into the selling of manuals, e-books, and fictitious consultancy services! As a precaution, any so-called expert MUST post CURRENT (Not 4 year old pics o) photos of his farming operations in the different phases of hatching, grow-out, fattening, and sales. No scams please! If you copy pictures from the internet, I will out and shame you.

Not at all. Snail farming is as easy as ABC.

Ask your questions.

I just catch good species and deposit them in my my backyard.

Just lazy to build pens..

Their main food is humus soil, banana leaves, dead leaves, anything green matter.

Then they don't like direct sunlight, oil, ants and lizards...

samuelkaykay: I stocked about 200 young snails, after 2months i counted about 500 tiny and newly hatched snails.
Their best meal is pawpaw leaves and water melon.
It's fun!

Pictures don't lie...

pragmatist_m: Now that a poster has mentioned the issue about snail enemies, let us learn what are the enemies and how to keep them off.

One enemy I know is the soldier ants. They are terrible. one way to ward them off is by digging a small trench round the snail house and put used car oil and diesel fuel in it.

*** Please add your own.

Keep salt very far away from snails. Meaning, no feeding of snails with food prepared with salt.
Avoid direct sunshine from ur snail pens or cage.

Now...Add ur own jare...

ozo-dimgba:
a very nice thread I must say, I've dreamt of having a snail farm as a part-time job however, I don't know where to get young & a good species of snail to start with. I will appreciate if anyone with the right knowledge to share it here. many thanks to the OP.

NB: dont venture into comercial snail farming with ignorance, the mortality rate might be too disastrous. You need a mentor to guide you frm start to finish. We often advise our students to ensure thier snail pen/house is fully ready and comfortable for snails to thrive in thier new home in ur bacckyard. So MANY factors MUST be considerd before you start Heliculture business. Pls note do not start with Juvinile (baby snails), let ur foundation stocks be matured giant African snails, so they can mate and start reproduction soon.

there are lots of enemies of snails, from owl if outdoor, centipedes, lizards for small ones, termites/soldier ants(only a sting is enough to kill a snail; your snail will only crawl/withdraw in & never comes out,am not talking of hibernation in dry season/lack of moisture),beetles, frogs, ducks if u have any, leftover feeds- this help disease spread, which would result in death, salt also is an enemy

How to Build A Snail Pen

What a Snail Pen Is
Farm animals are usually kept in pens
so as to restrict their movement. A
good snail pen enables the breeder to
monitor his or her stock at all times
with ease. So, a snail pen is just a single
fence-in area which restricts the
movement of snails and protects them.
It can be built using corrugated sheet
metals, fine mesh chicken wire or
woven plant materials from split
bamboo.

Usually, a snail pen would always be
free of weeds or overgrown grasses. It
must have shelter plants like plantain,
coconut, pawpaw, banana and pineapple
to provide shade.
The pens are constructed in various
sizes depending on your land space.
Depending on the size available to you,
you can have: 1m x 1m, 1.5m x 1m, 5m
x 5m or 10m x 5m. With a 1m x 1m pen
space, you can comfortably stock 50
giant snails.
The need to
Grow Shelter Plants
What are shelter plants? They are
plants that provide cool shade or serve
as windbreakers in a snail pen. They are
extra source of food for snails to aid
quick growth. Snails can choose what to
eat from any of the shelter plants. Some
common shelter plants are banana
trees, plantain trees, pawpaw trees, oil
palm tree and coconut trees. These
shelter plants overtime helps to
suppress the growth of weeds and
grasses in the pen. When there's
excessive rain, they climb and hide
under the plants.

u can breed them under banana/plantain trees,it would reduce heat intensity, wet them with watering can if outdoor, but dont water logged their habitat, for termite, initially assess your choice of location & prepare d spot well, remove dirts, it attracts termites, ash can ward them off, used engine oil can be used to mark a barrier against ants e.t.c, but u have to guard your snails also from reaching it

Can carton be used in rearing snail?for those that doesn't have land or space

merit12: Can carton be used in rearing snail?for those that doesn't have land or space
using carton has its many challenges, first when water come on it,it becomes soak & messy, hence it create room for development of fungi with bacteria. slime buildup in d carton will result in massive death of your snails.slime causes more death than u can imagine, that is what many hardly discern in their snailery setup

19naia: People need to also recognize the diseases that humans can get from snails....The most nightmarish nervous system infections are carried by snails and spread by rats as well...Where there are people and food, rats will be there, the snails eat rat feces also and rats sometimes eat snails or the same vegetables and pellets the snails eat and slime on....They share diseases this way.....Snails cellular structure is most similar to mammal nervous cell structure, and so it is when humans get infected by snail diseases, the disease thrives in the nervous cells and does damage there..
Its good to be careful...I know of a lady in my area who ate vegetables that had very small infected snails and she was damaged in her nervous system so badly and eventually entered her brain and she went into a coma....Another man recovered but has permanent nerve damage causing him to shake and have terrible balance and coordination of his movements...

African snails are known to be viable carriers of Rat lung worm, rats carry that micro worm as well and they spread it among each other by snails eating rat feces and rats eating snails or snail slimed vegetables or vegetation with snail feces.....

proper washing and cooking is certain prevention, wash hands after handling snails, so as not to ingest any particles from the snails body or feces....Keep rats away from the snails and that will isolate the snails from contagions....Exotic and terrible diseases happen among fresh water Mollusks. A Sea mollusk has the most exotic venom, the cone shell mollusks venom....
