>>> Soil: Plantain grows best in deep soil that is well drained and rich in
organic matter. Fallow land can also be used, but the yield will depend on

The post harvest waste angers me especially that of banana when it can be processed into flour. l add the banana flour whenever am preparing pap and l can tell you the taste is heavenly!

Good people plantain is medicinal, the fluid in the stem of the matured plant is use to cure broken bone from stem you can reproduce more suckers for expansion..It si a crp that can give you regular source of income for the nesxt 15 to 20 years without replanting because it will keep reproducing upstrings so to say to keep existig so all you have to do is farm maintanance.

You can start small by buying two acres , plant plantain on one and plant cassava or other crops on the other then by the second year expand to the second acre.

Mr Olufemi, who owns a plantain farm off Papa Lanto (on Ilaro/Sagamu) on the old
Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, said plantain farming is lucrative. He plants plantain for
profit and makes good cash from it yearly. He has identified breeds that are more
productive, high-yielding and pest-resistant for more profits.
At the beginning of the planting season, he bought 1,000 suckers at N150 each, which
totals N150,000. When he harvested, he got 1,000 bunches of plantain which sold for at
least N1400 each , he should it himself. So, he made about N1.4 million from the sale. If he had planted the
double bunch varieties, he would have gotten between 1,800 to 2,000 bunches and would
have made (1,800 X1400) N2,520,000 sales not profit
He said after expenses, one could still make about 400 per cent profit.
To improve the quality of his plantains, Olufemi uses animal manure mixed with saw
dust on the farm.
Prospective investors need to have at least N350,000 if you are managing it yourself. This will cover purchase of the land, purchase of suckers, labour and other costs.
He said with an investment of N350,000, one can make more than N1 million in turnover and about 400 per cent in profit. The profit depends on the quantity of bunches that can be harvested per acre/hectare multiplied by the selling price per bunch of
plantain. Olufemi said plantain growing has changed the livelihoods of people. We helps entrepreneurs secure land for purchase, prepare it and get good suckers at a fee and manage the farm.
Plantain is an all-year round market. It provides monthly income year round after the first year harvest but must be well manage.
Prospective investors can start with an acre of land, which can contain 800 to 1000

Once you are above 45 years old stop eating high starch content food like cassava products (Garri, Fufu, loiloi, lafun/cassava folur etc) or yam products (Pounded yam, boiled/fried etc) rather eat more of plantain flour products...

1) Locate the office of the Bank of Agriculture that covers the area or local government area where your farm is situated and open an account with the bank with a minimum deposit of N2,000.00

2) For the ‘Know Your Customer’ (KYC) requirements, you must present your NEPA Bill which confirms your place of residence + any of the approved means of identification such as International Passport, Drivers License, National Identity Card or Voters Registration Card. If you do not have the NEPA bill, forget the loan and do not waste your time going near the bank.

3) Other requirements are:
Complete and signed account form
Complete and signed mandate card
Present 4 passport photographs of yourself

4) You must run and operate the account for at least 3 -6months before applying for the loan. Do not think that you can just open the account, abandon it and show up after 6 months for the loan. The loan is not the usual national cake and the bank, newly repositioned, is not fooled. If you play that old game, the bank will doubt your integrity and commitment to repay the loan if granted and that means you may not get it.
Running and operating the loan means that you make it an active account. This means making sure that you save money and withdraw from the account on a regular basis. The bank wants to see that there are transactions going on in the account. Therefore, you should make regular deposits and withdrawals on the account during the 6 month period to create an active relationship that makes the bank have confidence in you.

5) You must have an existing farm, be it small or big at a fixed location and the farm must have its record of operations and activities on a daily basis neatly kept. The era of armchair farmers/political farmers/farms of no fixed address/classroom farmers are over. The bank will visit your farm for inspection when you apply for the loan.

6) The bank will check what you have on ground; see how far you have gone; what the loan is required for, and ensure that the loan is appropriate for what it is required. The bank wants to know whether you have an adequate knowledge of your area of farming business. You must be able to demonstrate the practical hands-on experience in your area of farming. The bank wants to know whether you have a project you are working on and the fund requirements. And within a month of the inspection, the loan will be approved if the bank is satisfied.

ADVANTAGE
THE LOAN DEDUCTION STARTS AFTER 6 MONTHS OF COLLECTION USSAGE BECAUSE IT IS FOR AGRICULTURE WHICH IS EXPECTED TO HAVE STABILIZED AT THE END OF 6 MONTHS.

What are you waiting for?
Get the land ready and start setting up the farm with what you have presently.
Then, go open an account with the Bank of Agriculture and operate it as required for at least 6 months.
Make an estimate of the farm’s fund requirements and get it ready before applying for the loan.

@ Jeru, an acre is 55k , note that a hactare is 2.5 of an acre. An acre there ia 6 plots of land while an hectare is 15 plots.
