Nice move, but is DSTV really stopping others to compete with them? i think DSTV is only enjoying the monopoly because it is a common household name that every nigerian has embraced over the years, and every other has been downgraded; and this is because we nigerians are still seeing it as the best so far despite their billings, at times poor signals, incomplete channels etc. But if there are other satelites that thinks they can really compete with them, they should and we nigerians will also make the choice and change to it.

DSTV are not stopping any other companies from the cable tv market. Cable tv is not cheap anywhere in the world. U choose the one u can afford, if u want pvr, then u pay for it. U can't afford it, but gotv. Its as simple as that.

I think your comment too might represent a misjudgment or outright ignorance of the case against DSTV as raised before Reps. Please go and read it properly instead of doing "I too sabi for here"
BluIvy:

Honestly, these comments on this thread are the most silly & ignorant. The topic says it moves to end DSTV monopoly but when you read the whole thing the monopoly exists because of incompetence & poor offer from other players. How is the monopoly? When DSTV just out class and just stand out from the competition on their product offering?

People on this thread always act as if they do not have a choice not to use SA company products. Who is forcing them to use MTN, DSTV et al South African products? Why does it have to be a diplomatic row when people can just not patronize these SA companies and they will willing fold and go on their own. I think all these sily posters are jealous of SA and since they cannot afford these premium services they do not want anyone affording them.

Am just tired of these people whining about SA when sa brings them civilization to their door step.

Madcow you've made very valid points and I always bow to superior arguements even when its at complete variance with my position.

Now like I said, you've made very strong points, but there's no point rubbing it in people's faces. I know you're relatively well to do because I've followed you even from TEHn days, but you have to appreciate that the vast majority of your countrymen are struggling.

a person who is struggling has no business with cable tv in the first place. cut your coat according to your size. when i started working, i was watching regular lagos tv. then i switched to dstv with the basic bouquet. i a now on the family bouquet. i am considering switching to the explora, but i honestly cannot make the mental justification for it, especially as cash is a little tight.

i do not understand this bizarre sense of self entitlement

For me, it doesn't say much about your wisdom when you posit that its okay for DSTV to charge what they like just becos they bring a lot of content to bear. Was MTN bringing content to bear when they charged 35000 for a Sim in '02? Same Sim that is now been offered for free in the streets of Lagos today.

thats called competition. if another cable company can take a chance with nigerias chaotic business environment, then there may be a drop in dstv prices.

Also there is nothing to laugh about in HiTV's failure. I for one felt very sad for them. Their one off show put DSTV on their toes and made them open up other bouquets for Nigerians of less social class.

DSTV has always had multiple bouquets even before Hitv

i really dont understand these arguments. there is gotv, there is startimes, there is even the satelite plate [not dish] where you can get free to air and mbc action etal

you want to enjoy premium, you have to pay for it.

end of.

Its not about too much money or not.. This is business not Charity.. That London you are talking about, Cable is not free. And this is not a 'Conspiracy Theory' I wonder where that came from, its just simply analysing the situation on Gorund.

I would love it if all the seats on a Plane were like Business Class seats and we all got the same treatment as the Business class flyers do, but sadly, better service = more money. This is Basic Economics 101.

I would like for all Mercedes Benz cars to cost the same as Kias and toyotas, but unfortunately, that kind of luxury and craftsmanship costs a shiitload more money...

I would love it if all my suits were Italian and swiss hand crafted, but that kind of quality does not come cheap..

If you cant afford the Premium package, get the cheaper packages. DSTV is not the only cable satellite company in Nigeria.. Startimes, MetroTV, CMTV, CTL, etc... Why do you have your eyes on DSTV?!! Cos you want the best.. SIMPLE!! grin

Why havent you asked the government to force Coscharis to reduce the cost of Bentleys and Benz's?! grin

Let's wait and see how long it will take before any bill is passed and implemented. When it comes to making laws that will benefit the common man, we know how our reps and senators behave.
But, it didn't take them anytime to approve the borrowing of ONE BILLION DOLLARS proposed by the clown to FIGHT the bokohaRAMS that they're currently negotiating PEACE with.
Meanwhile, I don't see DSTV doing any monopoly here. Our own indigenous providers too are very greedy!
How much is Dasat subscription?
How much is Startimes subscription?
How much is Hitv subscription?

The House of Reps Members are clueless I swear..

DSTV does not have any monopoly, they are simply the best in the Market and thats why all their competitors cant keep up. #Period.

The moment the reps fhuck with Multichoice, they would either water down their programming to match whatever rates the government imposes of them or pack up and leave..

The competition that came in the form of HITV saw how difficult the satellite game was and folded up.

Cable TV is not cheap anywhere in the world. DSTV prices are almost similar across Africa.. WHy is it Nigerians that keep complaining as if DSTV is part of their fundamental human right as a Nigerian. Why has the House of Reps not audited NTA to find out why the biggest Government owned Television station in Africa is so useless.
Chai! cheesy Epic!

Like HiTV abi? They were much more arrogant brand during their short EPL reigns. And picture quality was not too far from that of LTV 8

True.

I pay N13,450 per month. That's paying about One Million Naira (N1,000,000) to watch TV for only 6 years. That's the price of 1 plot of land in some outskirt of Lagos. Chai. I cant wait for the success of this move.

To be on the conservative side, let's say they have 1,000,000 premium subscribers. If my math has not failed me, that's N1,000,000,000,000 (someone should help me write this in words) for 6 years.

Dstv is a private company driven by profits and costs.

Dstv is in a Oligopoly market, not in a goods market.

In Oligopoly...competition is tough..the company that has good strategy, management, good service and quality product will survive.

...and for new companies to enter the market is not simple.

It is not a must to have a dstv, if you want to patronize local satellite tv just leave dstv...

Where are educated nigerian business people ?? for a country that pride itself as the most educated and resourcefull cant come-up with just one satellite tv company that will give dstv a run for its money, instead of blaming dstv...

Quality comes at a price...if you cant afford go local.

In SA we have 3 satellite tv compnies, dstv, Toptv( useless) and EtvHD( its free,no subscriptions) and Siyayatv coming next year..no one here or the government is complaning about the pricing. dstv offer the best content... and they are in competition with SABC stations in terms content.

I pay R295 for my dstv compact...should I complain NO. that is what I can afford. If I want more I cannot pay R663 for premium,...
update your shallow brain ..nigeria had Hitv but dstv killed it. this legislation is to protectthe newly launched CONSAT cable tv

For the last time....HITV failed because it went into business on the assumption that Nigerians were buying DSTV because of EPL and Champions league.

The truth of the matter is that DSTV is far more than those two sports events.

Does daarsat and other cable tvs charge with pay as u view? Let those ones do it first before attacking DSTV. Moreover I don't even see any problem here, multichoice is a private company, if u feel their services is too expensive, look elsewhere. Its as simple as that. This is not a basic amenity that the govt subsidies for citizens. Na person wey don chop dey think of cable tv, this is not petrol where people can go on strike when the price is too high.

Nigerians have bad managers simple. Toyin Zubair started HiTV and ran it aground. It's difficult for Nigerians to compete where tthere is no govt backing or interest. Wonder why all of our millionaires and billionaires are into commodity businesses like cement, rice, oil and gas?
