"So, the girl just disappeared like that?" Mr Seriki asked his wife over the phone when she told him Adebimpe had run off with Emma. The agreement was for her not to mention Bimpe's pregnancy to any living soul to ensure the success of their plan. Chief had swallowed her pregnancy news hook, line and sinker. He was so happy he invited his aunt thessy to go take care of his pregnant wife since he was out of the country.

Every week, she visited Dr Smart's house to deliberate and see how Bimpe's pregnancy was advancing. Adebimpe on her own was restricted to the bq and could only come out whenever Dr Smart and her daughter were away at school and work.

"She's due in about two weeks." Dr Smart informed her friend who looked heavily pregnant herself.
"Really? I better get my bag packed." she said and both women sighed. Barrister Smart was due back in the country exactly three weeks from then and Mr Seriki was due back finally in two. Mr Seriki had flown back to Nigeria from his program in UK on two occasions and on both occasions, Dr Smart had scared him away from trying to lay with his pregnat wife.

"There are complications." She had told him and having tried to get his wife pregnant unsuccessfully over the past six years, he gladly abstained if it meant having a healthy baby.

"I may have to induce her labour if she doesn't fall into labour before 15th." She informed her friend, "unless we have to move her to the hospital and that defeats the whole thing"

"Please do whatever you need to do so she puts to bed right inside the bq. I want her gone before your husband comes." Mrs seriki told her friend. Both women were anxious and one could slice through the tension in the Smarts living room where they both discussed Adebimpe's unborn babies.

At the bq, Adebimpe suddenly felt a thug at her stomach, a painful one. She felt weak at the knees, her lower back ached ferociously and the toilet beckoned. Not familiar with signs of labor, she quickly moved towards the toilet, then her water broke and the whole floor was a small pool of slimy water. Her scream got the women running to her. Luckily, Dr Smart's nine year old daughter was spending the weekend at grandma's.

Taking in the scene, Dr Smart quickly grabbed her hospital bag and wore a pair of gloves and her ward coat. She was battle ready. Adebimpe's boy came out first but he needed to be rescusitated. Seeing this, Dr Smart quickly wrapped the baby and handed him to his mother, who was still in labor.

"It's a still." She informed the young lady and quickly retrieved the baby and handed him over to Mrs Seriki who took him outside the room. Within seconds, the baby girl followed. She cried all the way. She quickly checked on the boy, and ascertained he was okay. The two babies were cleaned and the girl was handed over to the new mother. She almost cried her eyes out, but eventually she relaxed,n aftre all she still had one.

"What will you have us do with the other baby? Do I pack him up for you?" Dr Smart asked the grieving woman

"No ma, help me do the necessary thing ma." She sobbed.

Mrs Seriki smiled inwardly, it all worked out. Two days later, early sunday morning, Dr Smart handed Adebimpe the sum of N200 in a white envelope.
"Your madam asked me to give you this for your transportation back home.", she told the new mother.

She quickly knelt down, sobbing. "Why ma? I'm still weak, I will like to stay a little longer. Besides, she promised taking us back home"

"She just had her own baby this morning, ok? My husband is due back in two days and he musnt see you and your baby"

"Ok, I'll leave at dawn ma" she told Dr Smart as she rockrd her baby girl.

Dr Smart felt moved to pity despite her plan with her friend. The journey was too long and the day was far gone. She sat at the edge of the 2 ft mattress Adebimpe shared with her baby and held the baby in her hands. She had mosquito bites because there was no window net. " you can leave tomorrow. But tonight you sleep in my daughter's room, she's with grandma."

She was overjoyed at the woman's compassion. Adebimpe knelt down before the woman to show her appreciation. Immediately, she arranged her things and followed Dr Smart to the main building; it was like moving from hell to paradise.

With tears streaming down her face, Adebimpe dressed her 3-day old baby up and picked her bag the following morning. N200 was too small for the trip. The little money she earned was all gone on her basic needs. Luckily, she still had the N500 Mr Seriki gave her before he traveled.

Dr Smart was kind enough to drop her oFf at ojota where she joined the bus headed for Osogbo. the journey was a tough one because her baby cried all through. They were both drenched in the rain by the time she got off the taxi that dropped them in front of her house.

Mrs Seriki wiped her face and stood up. She had to get to Dr Emma to find out what actually happened with the dna test result. The question was, had Dr Emma provided the spark that ignited chief's distrust in her? Or had the result come out positive truly as against what he told her when they met earlier?

Leaning against the walk-in closet, chief glanced away, his jaw tightening. The thought of his wife cheating on him just kept spreading outward like an ink stain, blacking out his love for her. If she didn't cheat, why would she ask such a question? He wondered within himself. Not a saint himself, he had been very discreet with his affairs, except for once or twice in the long long past.

"I'll be downstairs dear. "I'll talk to you later," chief said, turning the door knob as one of his phones rang.

Helen nodded and waved him off, happy to be left alone with her thoughts. She would have to see Dr Emma on her way to work, then fight her way back to chief's heart, she thought.

Suddenly she needed to breathe air that didn't stink of fear, to let the cold air clear her head. Chief had cut that short earlier, with his appearance on the porch. She checked the time, it was 9:38pm. She went down the stairs and through the short hall towards the back door and let herself out on the back side of the building.

A stiff wind slapped her face. She opened her mouth and gulped it in. Leaning back against the building, she let herself mourn the loss of peace and stability in her life- especially Tobi. All she wanted was a nice, well-ordered life.

Temi let herself into the apartment she now had to herself since Bolu moved back home to be with her mother after their service. She dropped her shopping bag on the table, removed her 5'' wedge and flexed her ankle. They've been job hunting seriously for sometime and today, mother luck shined on her, two weeks after Bolu landed a juicy job, courtesy of Ade. Bolu and Tobi had managed to remain calm despite their troubles; she wondered how they did it.

Temi found herself thinking of her recently crashed relationship and the sudden spark between her and Tobi Seriki. She caught herself thinking of the moment just before he left her apartment with Bolu last night, when he had stood a little too close to her and held her gaze with his a little too long while giving her a friendly goodnight hug. She smiled at the thought of Tobi.

"You can't avoid me forever"

She turned to the door in shock, half expecting to see Tobi standing there, but the timbre of the voice registered a split second before her eyes focused on the man standing inside the door. It was Deji, the guy that broke her heart exactly a week ago by walking another woman to the alter. He threw away five years of her life.

"Deji, I'm not avoiding you, don't let your ego work overtime. I'm a busy woman, besides you just got married to the woman that suits you better," she said angrily.

"I'm sorry, Temi." Those were the words he'd been uttering ever since she showed him the wedding invitation she stumbled upon in one of the offices she had gone for job interview.

"Keep it, Deji. You made your choice and hard as it may be, I am getting over you." She stood up and stood by the door with him without inviting him in. Just then, she heard footsteps down the hallway.

"Hi ya." It was Bolu. She was shocked and irritated at the sight of Deji and she passed him without answering his greeting. Deji took the cue and left after muttering what sounded like another round of apology.

"Temi, what's up jor?" She asked as her friend sighed and leaned against the door. "Are you still moved by the sight of that idi*ot?"

"Not really, Bolu. I think I'm still in shock though"
"Abeg, wear something simple, let's go to my place. Tobi and Ade will be taking us all out-including my mum"

Temi felt cheerful again and looked forward to an evening with Tobi. She quickly changed into a pair of blue skinny jeans and a lovely red sleeveless turtle neck, matching her red lipstick and red slip on. Just before they entered the camry Ade just gave Bolu as a birthday gift, Temi stopped. "Ore, any luck with Senator Smart's sample for the dna?" She asked, showing concern.

"Not yet o, we are going to his office again tomorrow."
"So, why don't you go to his house instead?" Temi asked
Bolu opened the door and both ladies sat down. "We are avoiding Dr Smart." She told her friend as she brought the engine to life and reversed out of the compound. "She's not aware her husband may be our father. She has been through a lot."

"Hmm...ok o, mother Theresa and Saint Michael. I wonder why you are being nice to her after all she did to your mum and brother." Temi hissed in annoyance. Bolu placed her right hand gently on her lap with the other one on the steering, said, "Temi, what if God did not use Dr Smart to reveal the secret?"

Bolu pulled up in the compound and both ladies got down. Tobi, Ade and madam ty sat on plastic chairs, under the tree, chatting and laughing loudly. They all seemed happy, especially madam ty who had changed positively considerably in the past few days.

"Hi."Ade hugged bolu and tapped Temi's cheek. Bolu clasped Tobi's arms briefly and gave him a hug. She kissed Ade on the lips. "I'm sorry I'm late," she apologized, slightly out of breath.

"Boluwatife, go and dress up quickly." Tobi said as he gave Temi a hug and sized her up. Madam ty looked on, all smiles. Within twenty minutes, they all cramped inside Tobi's Range rover sports and headed first to Dominos along ring road. When they noticed madam ty wasn't caught up with Dominos and pizzas, they went to top one for pepper soup.

"My first night out with my mother must be special," Tobi held her hands and walked her inside the open bar. Once again, tears of joy streamed down her now radiant face. She had on a beautiful pair of jeans and tshirt, forced down on her by her children. She smiled as she pulled her shirt over her jean, she's been doing that ever since they dressed her in the attire. Within a week, she had had full body massage, a change of wardrobe, lovely hair do and a lot of good things. Life couldn't have been better, she thought.

They were enjoying their fish pepper soup when Ade suddenly held Bolu's hands. "Boluwatife, will you be my wife?" He asked.

"Yes, yes." Bolu was overjoyed. She had it coming, just not this soon. He had been her rock since the issue of Tobi and mrs seriki started. They all clapped their hands and Tobi hugged Temi on impulse. Their face locked, something clicked and they both smiled in acknowledgment of the chemistry.

Tobi's phone rang as he dissected his huge cat fish. He shrugged his shoulders and picked his call. He had been very upset with Mrs Seriki, he didn't even understand why. "Hello son," Mrs Seriki said on the other end.

"Hello ma." Tobi responded respectfully
"Baby, where are you? When are you coming home?" Mrs Seriki asked him.
"I'll be at home before 10pm ma." He checked his watch, it was 9:39pm. He would have loved to spend more time with them but madam ty had made him promise never to disrespect mrs seriki.

"You can drop me off on your way." Temi chipped in. Tobi was elated, he enjoyed spending time with her.
"Ok, we should start going in five minutes. My mother and sister will be taken care of by Ade."

"Yes, especially with our big day with Senator Smart tomorrow." Bolu reminded them. The issue of paternity had constantly hung over their good moments. They quickly ate their fish, downed their drinks and headed out. It was a fun-filled night, just like Bolu promised Temi.

There is a saying in yoruba that: kaka ki n ma je sese, maa fi se awa da nu. It means: instead of not enjoying something, I will waste it so that others won't enjoy it too. I have seen people who hurt people they loved because they can't watch them happy with another. Let's just watch and see if she's the all forgiving type. Thank you for your assured readership- I know I can count on you!
