I never ever leave my car with ny mechanic. I stay there till the repair is done. Even if it takes the whole day.

Secondly, when it comes to buying parts. I do that myself but b4 I leave, I warn him tht if I discover any fault asides from that which i came for or anyother that I'm already aware of. I'll call the police.

Thirdly, I hate younger mechanics. They too fraudulent

Mine told me my tie rod bushings were worn, gave him money and he claimed he fixed them and brought the car an hour later. . . . . . . . . . . . . . .fast forward, two weeks later I needed to make an emergency trip and I wanted to change my brake pads, fortunately my mechanic wasn't in town so I decided to take the car to another mechanic. . . . . . . . . . . .on removing my tyres, the new mech tells me my tie rod bushings are worn, so I act the fool and tell him to change them, he removes them in front of me and truly there are worn, I also discover that the bushings have never been changed before, to add salt to injury, the bushings for my vehicle are not even in the market in Abuja talkless of being fixed within the hour!!! . . . . . . . .long story short, two days later I get the bushings from Lagos and everything thing is fine . . . . . . . . . . . .I drive straight to my original mechanic and narrate my story, He initially tries to deny but later starts apologising when I show him the old worn bushings!!!

It is advisable to get the replacement parts urself

winkI learnt the hard way from all this artisans...I became smart not to put the fate of my car on one mechanic...tell me what is wrong..I double check with another mechanic I go buy the stuff my self and pay you for your service.Sometimes back needed to do an overhaul...trusted this guy so much..for a long while didn't know he was milking me dry.Was not intentional..was driving through and just discovered oh...it's where spare parts are being sold..fortunately I had a copy..of the list he gave me...I just decided to check...Kai.....I almost ended in the hospital with BP.....it was bad...more than 200% increment.I became wiser. grin

After my first rip off, I decided to make friends with all of them at the workshop. From the rewire guy, to panel, to the engine compartment guys, all of them.
I speak their language. I buy them drinks, snacks, whatever. I joke around with them. They repair my car, I zoom off. Sometimes, I even carry over their workmanship to whenever I visit them again. Lol.
I got to discover you can never really catch them. If they want to cheat or rip you off, dear God, you'll curse your luck.
Advice; come down to their levels. No too speak grammar. Mix the language, all join. Lol.

Make them your friend too. It helps.

Mechanics, like many Nigerians like to cut corners because the society is seriously sick. Our political and religious leaders have taught us that you must be smart/dubious to make money in Nigeria. The proof of this is everywhere- Crooks and criminals get better rewards. Shame on all of us.

I had a similar experience at Asaba. After a minor accident wit my KIA Optima

I contracted an alleged KIA specialist to help fix my car and he listed items I needed to replace to get it rolling. Among the items include Camber, tyrod, stabilizer Linkage e.t.c
The mechanic gave me an estimated bill of 70,000 to buy everytin and he defended the price wile swearing to God that he will nevr cheat anyone in his life.

He tried to make me believe that KIA have no spare partz in d open market and even if there are, the price is very very expensive.

I wasn't very comfortable with his price and his claim so I entered Onitsha Ngbuka/Obosi market my self and I got all the spare parts for less dan 20k.

Not hapi wit my actions the mechanic demanded that I must pay him 20k as service fee else I would nt leave wit my car he wouldn't fix the parts and he wouldn't allow another mechanic enter his workshop to fix d car up for me.

Well, for peace sake I settled for 15k service fee since he lost out in purchase of spare partz. I was done wit my official assignment at asaba and was due to return to lagos for a meeting and new assignment.

D mechanic upon realizing this he deliberately delayed fixing up my car until d last minute he called and told me my front passenger shock must be changed.

I didn't ve time to go see for my self I had to leave the car behind and I flew to lagos. so I asked him to go buy it and he charged me 12k for a single shock which I paid + 2k transport.

After my meeting in lagos I was given a new assignment so I returned to Asaba to pick up my car. Mr mechanic was done.

I drove down to lagos with strange noise coming from the shock. I visited KIA office only to be told that a volks wagon shock was fabricated and fixed in my Car.

I was mad. Real mad. The mechanic had fabricated and fixed a wrong shock which cost maybe 3k. While the actual shock cost just 15k for two.

I had no option than to ignore him and move on wit my life.

How would u leave your car for a mechanic n go away n even after you've discovered he'd ripped u you don't tell him. If you're still using him know you're his atm n he'll always play a fast one on u-don't think you'll b smart enough to catch him. Well, whenever my car needs servicing or repairs I stay put till its done, if a part needs b changed, I have to c d part removed, eye-snap it (before i can think of taking a walk) either go with him to get d new part or confirm d price through call with some dealers whose number I have. All the same I'll advice u to find a good day n tell d mechanic you know what he'd done n he shouldn't repeat it again that you've forgiven him. That way he'll know you're no mugu n will put some honesty in his dealings with you.

From my little experience, be conversant with your car and be present when they are fixing anything in your car.
if not, you will be paying for mechanic's mistakes and 4times more for 1 spare part

Well, as a life policy, I dont really trust anyone ....but my pastor/mechanic has actually proved himself.....the guy actually insists I go with him to the market when parts are needed Even though experienced, he knows the limits of his expertise and refers me whem necessary

All artisans are bunch of liars.

Imagine a mechanic calling you to know how far with your car, because he's turned me to a mobile ATM.

No matter what you do,they always have a way to scheme their customers.

Yea...there is nothing you can do about it, apriko is unavoidable. What I do is to let them know that I trust them and they should do me apriko with conscience.

without these mechanics, we won't be able to afford cars in the first place. without the likes of the mechanics, the nigerian economy would have died long time ago. i see what the mechanics, tailors, carpenters, plumbers, rewire, electricians etc, i see what they do, althought not perfect. can anybody show what the pastors, politicians, police, lawyers, engineers, doctors, ph.d and m.sc holders are doing? i looked around i saw nothing but the works of the mechanics and their likes. They are the future! i am a doctor that depend on the mechanics and electricians and the cooks.

My experience is with my branded dell computer whose parts had never been changed. The stuff wont just switch on, I take it to this guy who tells me to come back later so he cld take his time to look at it. I came back and he showed me a vga card that was not the same color as other components in the system. says its bad needs to be changed. i gave
him money and lo n behold he replaces it with the original one that was there before whose color matched other components. All the while this guy was preaching honesty to me. Of course I played along cos all i wanted was a working system, but i swore never to patronise him again even if he were the last on earth. The guy sees me occasionally and is always like " bros a far naa ur system still dey work?" trust me naa with a smiling face but muttering a thousand curses underneath. u think say na u smart pass..
