my only problem is mathematics. i find it difficult to understand it. and i'm studying Banking and finance. just wrote our first semester exam, now waiting for result. i dont want what hDr appened to me during our exams, to repeat itself. any solution? it's depressing seeing people who you are better than academically, making fun of you indirectly, parading theirselves as mini- god because you are not good in mathematics

Frankly most of us have had a share of this at a point in time or another. However, I will suggest that you approach your lecturer and complain to him honestly without any form of reservation or bribe. Tell him to give you materials and coach you if possible. Call him to ask of him or send a text every now and then. It may not do much but it will improve your relationship with him and who knows?...

Apart from that, find the A listers in Mathematics and read with them. You can stylishly start discussion groups with the best brains in your class during exam period and gain from their wealth of knowledge. You have to throw off pride on other to achieve this.

Finally, pray and pray and pray + read and read and read. Find easy cuts to Business maths and apply them. Meet old students to teach you the course. Goto ocw.mit.edu and browse the course to read more about it. Find other good students/graduates in other schools locally/ abroad and send them mails(if you want to take it that far).

I hope I've helped. smiley Remember, the attainment of heart desires is by striving... Hold your thoughts mentally until it becomes a part of you.

- prayers na koko o.... No forget papa God
- I reduced to the bearest minimum spending time @ the social centre
- Read at least 3 hours every Day(draft a time table to cut across all ur course work even the course u dont like) and follow the time table religiously.
-Eat very well, cos your brain is the highest conductor of the food u eat.
-Sit in class where you can concentrate and hear ur oga
-If you dont have reasonable questions, its better u just listen in class
-Interact with ur coursemates well. share past questions, exchange books.

Expecting my last result at the department of Accounting faculty of admin ABU ZARIA. Am hoping 4 the best and wishing all of u success.

Hope dis helps

God was der for me all thru. My 1st year I was too serious da I didn't v tym for God. Inspite of my distance awy frm God, he was faithful, reason; I was too serious, yet d slightest mistks I made resulted to failing coses- 3units, d lectures didn't evn consider my seriousness. I wud v had moredan 2fs, rada I landed at 2es n 2fs, hmm all 3units, very pathetic. Year 2 I embraced God such dt I let him do my sch works for me cos my strnt, intelgence, brilliance had all failed me. God took ova. N my grades sprouted. Den I had a covenant wt God da I will nt indulge in any form f xam malpractice, including tellin anyone an ansa in d xam hall, cos bfor den da was d only tin I didn't consider bad. God tested me. Wen I was inno, I was accused f showin my work to somone in d xam hall n was walked out f dhall. Bu God was faithful I had c. I dint dlay my c/o, I wrote dem n had bb
I dis covad dt wen I rid wt ppl m mor intelgnt, I don't cova much. N wen I rid wt ppl higher dan me, I get lost n confused. So I dcide to rid alone (usually hiding) n jot down d tins I do nt undstnd, den tk it to dos higher dan me for xplanation. Wt dt I cova mor n undstnd beta. My year 3 was wat I cud call perfect cos my gp for d levl was 4.5m bu u kno wat I was alwys found at d chapel such da ppl do c me as an exco in f d church's societies, bu I wasn't an exco, infact, I told God da I wudnt want to b, bu wud gladly luv to b a vry active member. Funny enuf, I blonged to 3 societies in d church n was vry active in d trio. Anytym I tried to use ma acadmic as an xcuse for atnding any f d meetings, I eida miss a quiz, or miss to submit ma ass or anytin els wud jus rong. So I jus had to kip to ma own side f d promise to God.
My final year was vry hectic, da I tuk ill several tyms. Somtin I will neva forgt, I wore 3 sweaters n d day f ma final paper, bu God was faithful. I made it. I graduated wt 2.1

Well, as an undergraduate… I would like to share some of my practical lessons here with us.
The first of all is to have passion/zeal for the course you are studying, anything aside that has started contributing to the failure of the student. Believe you me, if you have passion for what you do, you will try as much as possible to put in your very best which will lead to academic excellence.
Another important thing is for a student to know the kind of friends he/she associates him/herself with. That goes a long way in attaining your goal. I for example, in my first year in the University, God really helped me to associate myself with focused and determined students like myself. However, I wouldn’t say it was a bit late before we knew one another (probably in second semester). We assigned some of the days in the week for group discussion in which every individual has been given a particular course to be handling (tentatively though, cause we rotate it). For me, I don’t attend tutorials… it’s important to know yourself than to be following crowd. Three of us, when we finished our second semester exams (100L), went to our admission officer to check our first semester results because it hasn’t been pasted then. Seeing our first semester results… two (mine included) of which was very close to First Class, calls for challenging ourselves. Though, we were able to attain such fit due to God factor and seriousness… Heaven, they say, helps those who helps themselves. We determined that, come next session(200L), 5 dot(i.e 5.0 GPA) is the smallest of what God can do for us, and we’ve been planning ahead of time now, even against resumption. Not to bore us with this epistle, I would like to leave us with this:
Determined focus is what makes a man who makes things happens different from man who watches things happen – Bill Newman.

200L, Physics Electronics.

Dunno how to start motivating yu.
I used to think I dnt knw maths too , till I motivated myself into believing I know it.

In my first semester, I had a "grin" in maths.. Y? From the onset I thought since I didn't knw maths in secondary school , things would be the same. It had a big pull on the GP and its still the same reason I'm still hustling to hit a 1st class (I'm on a 4.34 now).

How did I help myself??
Before 2nd semester started I determined to have an A in my maths.

I made sure I payed 90% attention in all math classes,,
Asked my questions no matter how stupid they sounded,,
Made sure I understood everything taught before leaving each class( would just sit there till the class is needed) ,,
I participated in almost every class exercise,,
I solved all assignments,,
I went extra early for math classes ( first row things)
Made sure I understood 80% of the course outline completely
Most importantly,, I prayed and put all my trust in God.
I sha had an A in math at the end... Had a staggering GP of 4.78 that semester compared to 3.79 from 1st semester.

Trust me ,, By 200L 1st semester I didn't even have to Work that hard for my A.

Just believe in yourself, Trust God, and dnt let nobody weigh you down. You're gone get there.

I'm in my 300L 1st semester now.
Still hoping to hit the first class.

Hope I helped

My story would inspire you guys...

I graduated with 2:1 through hard work. Although i am not too brilliant, but if i had put more efforts starting from my first year i would have be a 4 pointer. NO FIRST CLASS IN MY SET.
I am a biochemist.

My cgpa in year one was 2.95 Without a single carry over. I got that because i never read until a day to test or when the exam time table is out.

At the end of year two i got 3.0, still without carry over. I drink, but not that womanize.

I felt my dream is getting buried due to my poor performance because my friends are 4 pointers, so i picked up the challenge in my third year. In first semester of 300 level i had 4.45 gpa. Not too good, but i knew i tried. I can do better, yet the pressure in that level was much. Second semester i had something a bit lower because i involved in politics. At the end of my third year my CGPA was 3.42.

In my final year i have much work to do, yet i head much programs. I was the leader in my seminar group which i had to shoulder the whole research and slide preparation. I struggled and i push my cgpa to 3.46 At the end of first semester final year.
In second semester i was also the head of my project group. I ran errands and got occupied with activities because my project took 6 months.

But..., at the end of my study i graduated with 3.52.

I knew quite well that i am a product of 4 point, but the euphoria of first year had really caused much to my low grade.
My intimate friends got 4.1, 4.42, 4.3. but i got 3.52

Throughout my study i never had a carry over, yet i don't read at night.
Biochemistry, hmmm! Not easy.

All poster above have all written what I had in mind. In addition base on my experience I graduated with a second class lower despite starting with a cgp of 3.92. What killed me were
1.) Not putting in mind that the higher you climb the tougher it become, I was treating my 200 lvl d way I treated my 100lvl thinking it would be the same. I paid dearly for it sha
2.) not moving with people of like/better mind, so I wasn't tasking my self beyond my comfort zone (in d city of the blind, one eye man is the king)
3.) not taking my continuous assessment test serious,
4.) by starting my reading few days to exam so wouldn't be able to cover much for

I had challenges and some of them were calculations.

I had challenges in...

Physics 101 and 102,
Math 101 and 104. During my time, math 104 was calculus in my school, and i wasn't thought in secondary school. So it was do or die.

Physical chemistry was also challenging when we got to Albert Einstein derivations.
Analytical chemistry 1 and 2 were hot. Only biochemistry, chemistry, industrial chemistry, and geology students took it then.

I didn't have much problems in biochemistry courses, but some were really threatening.
BCH 301, 303, 309, 311, 313, 302, 304, 306, 310 were the hottest in year three.

From year three we speak biochemically. What i mean by that is that all requirements were majorly structures (also known as biochemical pathways).

BCH 401, 411, 402, 410 and 412 were the major problems in my final year.
All the courses i listed were majorly pathways.

They are not that difficult if you have interest in structures. We draw structures so much and all medical students respect biochemistry for that.
Remember we took courses in microbiology and biology. Those courses are not strong because biochemistry would have get you more advance than what they entails.

Lest i forget, bio-statistics was a difficult course.
The course have topics like PROBABILITY, ANOVA, POISON DISTRIBUTION, CORRELATION, PERCENTAGE CUMULATIVE HISTOGRAM, ETC. The worst of it is time factor in the examination hall.

So, learn to manage your time and how to quickly grab the idea of whatever they request from you.

Good Luck!

2'1 was possible because my first year and second year GPA were fairly comfortable, amounted to well over 3.5, don't get it wrong. After the third year, the nosedive in grades amounted to about cumulative GPA 3.2 or so. With mediocre grades in the fourth year, there was not much improvement. It was in my fifth year after IT that 'my eye con clear' and knowing this was the last chance, that I decided to give it all I had. I made an average of 4.2 in my final year in addition to the 'free' boost Industrial Training (SIWES) grades gave most of us then, I found my final GPA at 3.64.
So, you need to see two clauses here:
1. Fairly good grades at the start
2. The boost the IT results gave
3. The self conviction I had to take when I knew having below 2'1 would affect my aspirations, post college.

Computer science, Ife.
Sir from ur post i deduced dat u are an engineering student so i will lyk u to answer d following questions (1) what do u mean by i.t "free" boost cos i.t is 6units do u mean u were all give A in ur i.t freely? or u earned the A? and do u use i.t in ur skul? (2) SWEP in some school is either 0unit or 6units which unit is it in ur skul? and do they use swep in ur skul? tanx

Yes U can! I had a cgpa of 3.9 in my 200L, I still graduated with a first class....though I not only worked hard, I worked smart.

I set goals for myself each semester, at a point I considered a B as a failure in any course. I wouldn't sound like it was easy....but if I could achieve it, I believe you can do even much better.

By I.T, I meant industrial training. It is fifteen units in my faculty, 3 units in 200lvl, 3 in 300lvl and 9 in 400lvl, summing up to 15. The results are not released until the final year. Having A is not guaranteed. It depends on the work you put into the excercise and how preeminent the reports that accompany them are. However, most importantly, it is contigent on how the coordinator/department decides to be lenient or strict with the marks. Not everyone had A in all three IT's but the results were generally favourable. I was lucky to have all A's.

Then, SWEP is what the part two IT is called, the part three is called SIWES 1 and the part four is SIWES 2.

It's not late at all. You are still fresh in the system. The key to making a First is to think unusually and do things that your course mates would not do. It attracts attention to you. Read wide and beyond the course range and always quote prominent scholars in your exams. Always try to teach your lecturer through your scripts and seminar presentations. They will gain an admiration for you. Don't limit yourself in any way. Break the bounds. If others are doing it, DON'T. Go BEYOUND. It worked for me. It will work for you.

N. B. Avoid late night readings. It's damaging to the brain and only enhances short term memory. It's bad on the long run. Always EAT well.
