They are for people, like me, who type without looking at the keyboard. When you touch those doted keys, it tells you the position of your hand on the keyboard without looking at it.

@ op is like u don't offer shorthand in ur secondary school, if u do probably u must hv knw what those keys are. They are end of home keys tht ur fingers are to be rest upon. Home keys are ASDF JKL; u are to start the counting from left with A thn stop at F thn u start again from semicolumn then u stop at F. This eight keys are called the home keys. If u wnt to be a fast in typing thn u need to lean hw to rest ur finger on those key while typing on the key board. Betterstill get a mavis becons typing software, u will understand why those keys are always mark on the key boards
Re: Have You Ever Wondered Why '5' Is Always Dotted Or Marked On Your Phone Keypad? by KingBish(f): 10:07pm On Nov 29, 2014
Those dotted buttons have lil screws that holds holds the keypad to the phone. You may want to loose your phone or pull out your keyboard to confirm this.

P/S: sounds like a joke but it's a fact

It's for those who touch type (Typing without looking at the keyboard). It helps touch typists to position their fingers properly on the keyboard when typing.
Nathan2222:

If you typed properly with your keyboard, you'd know why F and J have those dashes.

Remember what the "home row" keys are?
The left index finger goes on the F while the right one goes on the J.

The dashes are for locating them without looking at the keyboard.

It is not about blind people. Can they see the computer screen?? Nowadays, they have text to speech software for the visually impaired to use, but back in the beginning, blind people couldn't use computers. In fact, the practice began with TYPEWRITERS. So obviously it was not for them.

By the way, they make braille keyboards.

And if you listened closely, you'll observe that all numbers on a phone (whether touch or keypad) have different sounding tones. Just different enough for you to tell. Why?

Have you ever used an automated phone system that asks you to press a key for different options? e.g. "Press 1 for English"

The computer listens for the correct tone that each number makes. That's how it knows what number you pressed.

But that's the modern, digital usage. There is history behind the different frequencies of the different keys, in the days before mobile phones. It's called touch-tone.

Before touch-tone, it used to be a clicking sound--a different number of clicks for each number. It was the sound of the phone connecting and disconnecting in a pattern to signal each number. Those of us who are old enough remember that sound.
