Two pupils of the Federal Government College, Okigwe, Imo State have caused a stir in Umuchime Ubahu community in Okigwe Local Government, with the launch of a “rocket” they built from local materials.

The rocket, which was supposed to travel five kilometres, went further than programmed and landed in a residential area, causing a stampede.

The residents of the house where the rocket landed, alerted the police, thinking it was a bomb.

Commissioner of Police Muhammad Musa Katsina, however, dispelled fears of terrorism, saying the “amateur scientists”, who launched the home-made rocket, did not intend any harm.

Katsina, however, urged the residents to remain security-conscious and report suspicious movements to the police.

The police boss, who briefed reporters yesterday, said there was a bomb scare in the community when the two science students launched their rocket.

He said police investigation showed that there was no criminal intent, adding that it was a case of innovation and adventure.

“There was no terrorism motive in the act. We enjoin people to go about their activities without fear,” Katsina said.

He went on: “The manufacturers of this rocket are not terrorists, they are rather talented science pupils keen on developing their scientific skills. They should be encouraged.

“The rocket has been deactivated and is safe. The components as discovered by the Police Bomb Disposal Unit do not contain any radioactive or toxic element.

“Because the boys intended no harm, no punitive measures will be taken. I will rather recommend that they be encouraged so that they can achieve greater things.”

The teenage scientists asked for Federal Government’s sponsorship to enable them improve on their skills.

They said they built the rocket as part of a school exercise, which earned them a second position in a competition.

They said they were inspired to launch the rocket when they heard of the National Space Development Agency’s plan to launch a climate-monitoring satellite into space next year.

please direct ur questions to me...this is a pix of some of the materials...and obviously I bought the transmitter and receiver circuit. When I was interviewed, I explained everything, the journalist chose not to include that I bought some parts...which as raised so much debate...which I think is unnecessary...

Were u expecting a single corp member to build a military drone Guy that is what a whole corporation like NASA and NSA does. You dnt expect a single corp member to do that. What i expect is the govtment to sponsor and fund him to develop it to military standard.
Students and universities regularly build drones with or without government support in serious climes.

Quoting NASA and NSA shows you don't know what you're writing about.

I emphasized the MILITARY cos you've seen to have suddenly developed amnesia concerning the fact that your major criticism was that the drone built by the corp member cannot be used by the military

Hahaha people can lie oo, this is Phantom1 even there is Phantom2 now, is a drone camera, we used the current version in Experience 2014, last week.

One of the brushless motors will cost like N9,000. Its a quad, so total motor cost around N36,000. Esc, transmission components and camera not inclusive. Add gps and multirotor controller and the cost goes up. what about the cost for the video transmission units and display monitors? The shell and dampeners still not inclusive. Its impossible to build that for N20,000.

We appreciate when fellow Nigerians assemble modular components to create a flying system - It does take some good knowledge and a lot of will power to venture into a project that can crash on the first flight. But please, tell the press what you did - Assemble, not manufacture. The knowledge to do so and even fly it is not common and Nigerians will still appreciate it.

My company owns - drones.ng and we are DJI's authorized distributors for Nigeria. We are located in Abuja and there is an upcoming 1-day free DJI New Pilot training in January 2015. Training is in conjunction with DJI's global efforts to educate new pilots on technicalities around the phantom series quads and also promote safe and responsible flying. We will announce actual date on Nairaland forum just before Christmas.

I witness this drone in that same camp. Osun NYSC orientation camp batch C stream 2. it was a nice one anyway. if actually it was his own craftsmanship contract and wisdom to do greater works. if he is false that is his own cup of tea. remember self deceit is a malady.
