4.Hw many pieces can one stock in a 15 by 8 concrete pond to table size?

Just budget approximately N230 to feed each fish to maturity. It will give u a vague idea of d number of bags of feed u will buy and d amount u will spend in feeding. Most feed come in 15kg bags.

For feeding, feed dem till satiation 2 - 3 times daily depending on d stage of fish. Another method is to calculate d feed per average body weight of ur fish. Save urself d stress and just feed till satiation.

For d average body weight of ur fish, u do random sampling. Pick out some fishes frm ur pond and weigh dem; about 10fishes. D weight u get will be divided by d number of fishes u picked. Dats like d average weight of ur fish.

For 15×8 pond, depending on d depth of d pond u can stock 800+ adult fishes.
Try not to over stock ur ponds coz d fishes will do poorly.

House Good evening, Have anyone heard about feeding Cat fish with Tilapia?that is Breeding Tilapia after they must have hatched you can then introduce your catfish(3-4months old) to feed on the Tilapia, How true is this ?

How is fishmeal produced?

I just observed today dt most of the dry fish they sell in the mkt is catfish. This has never crossed my mind till today.
Anyone with the info on how to competitively process dry catfish to mkt standard shld please educate us. I then started wondering why the dryfish sold here is bought from the north. The mkt for dryfish is inexhaustible. One shld just try and make sure ur cost of production is ok so dt ur price will be ok.

floating Feed is okay it just that is somehow cost starting from 4k-#4500 local feeds I do used floating feeds shaaaaa.

Thanks so much for sharing ur experience. As a matter of fact, I believe floating feed is easier than sinking feeds in feeding fishes. I think some farmers think floating feeds don't make the fishes add desired weights and that they want to maximize profit.

That means he changes water once in every month which to me is unethical.. The size of the pond have no adverse effect on the fish and talking about profit No fish farmer will tell you he is making a loss except u are really into the business with him then he opens up..don't get me wrong he may be making huge profit.

i couldnt take pic of the pond cos the pond is far bigger than myself. i only took pic of the drainage and small area dt i could cover. He also has two hatcheries which he covers with tapauline.

@ Robonski, The guy is a friend who i know long time ago. He told me how he started. He made loss b4 he went somewhere in benin to learn, he paid heavily to learn but it was a one on one training for him only. He said he started with 6000fingerlings . He was told 1million 500k will take care of the feeding. He paid the money in another acnt meant for his feeding. He was feeding runts and made heavy loss. He was encouraged by his uncle to try again. It was at this point dt he went somewhere in benin to learn.

He feeds with vital feed and doesnt use local feed. i told him abt using coppens in the first two months. i shared somethings i learnt from here too and he was impressed. He showed me artemia- its like babies food in small can like cerelac. He said its sold 5k here. He says u control tempreture during hatching. Dt at times, u will even haveto put light for them in the hatery. He prefers to sell at 8months than 6months. He says he calls his buyers anytime he is ready to sell. He also sells by kg too. i tried to get how much he sell per.kg and he said there is.no fixed price. its abt bargain.i wanted to probe further but my friends dt went with me where in haste as it was getting late and we still have other engagements.

He used granite to cast some parts of the pond. he said he chained in three times. base. middle and top.

He promised to teach us and assist us during set up, free of charge.

There might still be room for improvement in his farm and he is not up to 4years in fish farm. He lives in his farm with wifey and baby. He confirmed dt coppens makes d fish grow in lenght. He told me he doesnt have specific time to change water but observes the water in the pond. He has changed water 3times for the 3months fish.

NB- This guy is a grains seller. He buys beans from mubi and sells here in anambra. He decided to diversify when boko haram issue started affecting their business. He now combines fish farming wit his business.

900,000 profit means that from fingerlings to 4 months all the fishes must attain at least 1kg which i don't think is feasible.

Its better to have a wide surface area than extreme depth. Personally i think 8ft depth is too much. Might even be dangerous to be around such depths if adequate precautions are not put in place.
The lenght doesnt have to be limited to 15ft, it can be much longer. Mine is 22ft lenght.

I read somewhere dat u said he harvests at 8months. Dats so long. U can achieve same results in much shorter duration and hence increase ur turn over and profits.

In addition to what you said and has been said, i am sure that if the gentleman changed the water more frequently, he might even achieve same result in 5 months . . . . And instead of 1.5 times in a year, could do 2 and couple of months to rest the pond.

It might not be economical to consider buying water all the time. This will be adding terribly to ur cost of production. Sometimes u might need to change water more than twice a week depending on ur discretion as a farmer. Also consider d fact dat u are now placing urself at d mercy of the water tanker drivers. I dont think u should follow diz path sir.

Chairman, you sound like a seasoned fish farmer and doing well at it . . . Why not expand in the fish farming for now and grow big enough there before moving into a poultry? Just a suggestion.
