I went to a hospital some years back for injections. When it was time, the nurse rudely said "Remove your boxers!" Just like that! I was not happy that she didn't even think of a more polite way of saying it.

I have discovered that Nigerian nurses are always rude and mean to their patients. This is prevalent in both public and private hospitals. You will walk in and see nurses playing with the doctors but immediately they sight a patient, their attitude changes. They will never smile and will always talk to you rudely,as if you are irritating them.I wonder if anyone has had a nasty encounter with a Nigerian nurse.

Op, u are so on point. I went to visit a colleague who just had her baby and I walked right upon two nurses harassing a young lady in labour. The shouting n insults hurled at her made me cringe....what's more, one nurse was holding a ruler. I walked past in pity for d lass, imagine going thru labour pangs n having to endure such cruel treatment from d very persons who should assist u. Are these nurses not supposed to be care givers? That's so not nice. When I reported to my colleague, she explained that d nurses do that to any woman who whines n cries instead of enduring d labour pains. What!!! cry
Those nurses need retraining, reorientation and strict code of conduct.
My humble submission

Some nurses are not just rude, they can also be downright stupid!!!!

And they believe they know all, whereas they know nothing!!!!

The only nurses I love and respect are trauma nurses, labour ward nurses and the anaesthetic nurses.....

All others just do nothing but gossip, watch African magic, yab patients, grow fat with big butts, and develop cerebral atrophy later in life....
Nooo Labour ward nurses are the worst ooo

pls dont fault them for their silly attitude but fault d employers, in overseas Nurses are been revered highly, and not only dt their been revered they also pay them in hrs accordn to services rendered. Here in Africa they reciev stipend which alone is enough reason to get them angry. Secondly they are job here is not apprictd, and most times peopl treat them lik they dnt mattr, so why do u thnk they will b happy wt peopl who make them work for wht they are not been apprictd and paid well for?

Care profession is for people who truly have passion to care for people. If you are there solely because of money or better job opportunities then you are on the first step to a grumpy life and frustration.

Having said that, nursing is a stressful and demanding(psychologically, emotionally and physically) profession and it's very easy to lose the compassion you need to show your patients. However in Nigeria, there should be a proper code of conduct and a watchdog which should adopt the law of duty of care, breach and harm. There should also be a transparent system that makes it easy to report nurses which should always lead to a thorough investigation and filter action to see who should remain in the profession.

Wait make I forget all this grammar, not a lot of things work in naija.

May God save us.

OP, not all nurses are rude so don't generalize.

Some patients and their relatives too can be very annoying and rude. And you don't expect the nurse not to react negatively sometimes.

I'm not trying to justify the rude attitude of 'some' nurses. But some mannerless patients deserves some tongue-lashing from the rude nurses.

On no condition whatsoever should a nurse or any other health worker be rude to a patient or relative to a patient . Do u think they are happy being there. Not only nurses but some doctors are outright rude. They don't have patience Infact I just started hating doctors too when a relative of mine was admitted. I don't no if it's a Nigerian thing not to act professional. They talk to u anyhow. I think it's a Nigerian thing. The moment they are in a position to be in charge of something. They just become demonic.

My encounter with some nurses at Unibuja teaching hospital was not funny at all. do know that instead of attending to me, the nurse frowned and was just playing with her phone? it took the intervention of SERVICOM for them to attend to me.

Haba madam, 90percent? Una dey try with dis una percentages.

Noticed same... 90% of them are just bitter.

To the topic,
Yes, some nurses can be rude o that makes me a nurse wonder why they are so pained. But truth be told some patients and patient's relatives can be annoying. It takes self discipline to ignore some of then. But does old nurses rude sha, always annoyed with everybody and I think its individual tin not about the profession cos so many nurses are angels too.
Complain don too much about rude nurses sef. Kilode gan? Lol

Your observation is quite correct but it will interest you to know that except in government intuitions most of the nurses you come across in private settings are quacks. The foundation of nursing training entails having empathy, respect and multi-disciplinary approach in providing holistic care to every client/patient. Also be nice to nurses Nigerian nurses are over worked, stressed out and under paid thanks

Op, dats funny bt uve met few nurses.
1. Most nurses u saw in d private hosp u guyz use are nt nurses bt auzillaries who doesn knw d unique function of nurses

2. In general hosp do u guyz knw dat there are shortage of staff(majorly nurses) imagine a nurse who has to manage 3wards in state own hospital, whereas 3nurse are suppose to run a shift

3. Do u knw majorly patients are fraustrating. Imagine wen a pt is calling on a nurse dat he wants a urinal and anoda is shouting of pain at another corner anoda is due to 4 drug. The nurse has to make use of her/his triage system to response to their need. Yet many will complain dat d nurse is hostile and partile.

4. When human are faced with stress from human stressors their mode swing and pple wont see d sweet side of dem any longer bt their hostile view.

5. Most hospitals are not equip with enof instruments and dis nurses have to improvise with d available, yet most patients will complain of ill treatment.
If resources are provided 4 work and human power is not overuse. U will see d 1daful side of nurses.
Nurses are great listners
That answers it. You have a point

Not all nurses are rude!

Personally, I'm always very friendly with my patients. Friendly to a fault and sometimes the patients try to take advantage of that.
So, I don't blame the "rude" ones for being rude. Not everyone can take some patient's excesses.

And its not even about the profession but the individuals. Most of my rude colleagues didn't just become rude in nursing, they are naturally rude and lack home training.

There are rude people everywhere. In the market, in the bank, in restraunts, in schools, etc!
I will marry you then,I love to marry a nurse, will u marry me?

most of them wear nastiness the way they wear their uniform. Same goes for many front desk officers (tellers and customer service officers) in a lot of nigerian banks.

This thing happens in Nigeria. When they see a sick patient it is as if the person caused the sickness by him or herself. Some nurses are outright mad. I mean real mad(crazy)
