A friend has been into music for like eternity. He'd always sing for us (friends). He's an IT guy, not that he's making millions but fairly comfortable. He was into a very serious relationship last year and composed a song that he meant to be played on his wedding day. Unfortunately things went sour and the relationship was ended. He finished the song about two weeks ago. We convinced him to put it online and the response has been small but exciting. Thing is, he got an email, then a call from one of the current top 10 artist in the Nigerian music industry offering to buy the song for 5 Million naira cash.

Point is, cos of the response he's been getting from the song, he's thinking of recording an album. We've been talking of taking the songs to radio stations (we understand it's not going to be free and we could pull it off to get a fair amount of airplay).

I don't want to sound arrogant but 5M while quite an amount isn't enough I think. This song in question is the type of song that's just different and unique in its own way. I think my friend's song can shape his music career just like "African Queen" shaped 2Baba's career.

Has anyone asked for a link to where the song was posted online?

Give me a link to the song. If it is nice as you have said, then I will help your friend to promote the song. My Cousin has a record label and trust me when I say I don't want to tell you the name of the label.

A little advice to you, African Queen + 2Baba would have been nothing without Kennis Music or similar setups. Successful Music is not just the song itself there is lots of other thongs to it, including the Politics involved. Kennis Music has connections that Made it possible.

If your friend is gifted at writing Songs he should stick to it, there are lots of Songwriters making good money in the Music industry.

Conclusion.
Take your 5Milla, Have an agreement with the Artist for your credits (Credits means your name will be in the title as the Songwriter) and by God's Grace the song becomes a HIT then you will have people paying you 10Milla to write songs for them.
Simple (Dont be greedy, if you have the Talent to write songs this wont be your best cos your just starting).

Venturing into a new terrain can be daunting albeit difficult at times mostly if you dont have the right instruments to propel you.

In your friends case i'ld say more daunting, the music industry can be a complex place to make ones mark especially as a new artist, even given all the right machineries and tools he might be lucky to hit it at inception, and he might not, its a probability thing and you cant always rule out the element of luck.

As regards the offer i'ld say your friend should grab the money, we all cant be musicians or artist hence we have song writers , music composers, sound engineers et al. Mike Ekko, Sia, Pete Doherty, Paul McCartney are all renowned song writer in the US, your friend can aspire to be the naija version of these people.

He can sell but hold one to his intellectual and publishing right, that way a certain percentage still comes to him on the song, get your lawyer notified so he can advice you on legal steps to take.

Hmmm.......if all the radio stations agree to givee your song airplay......everybody hears it and likes it...,,,how does that put money in your pocket?......do you think the veteran pirates would be sleeping? Is the song copyrighted?......and who respects or enforces copyright laws? Does the song have a quality video? Did you think about itunes or other that is the current way of selling music?...or are you thinking about printing cd's? You have absolutely no clue of controlling and marketing music. You guys don't have a single out ...your name out ...but yet talking about album and millions. Take the cash and let him sign on for a small percent of royalty...his name be attahed as the composer and maybe sign on to the artiste's label. You need to creep before you can walk.

SELL IT
Re: A Top Nigerian Artist Just Offered Him 5M To Buy His Song... Should He Sell? by zizirecords(m): 9:33am On Apr 04, 2015
My professional advice? Sell the song for double that amount i.e. 10m and forget about it. Don't even ask for royalties, it won't happen in the Naija music industry. Don't even mention it later that the song is yours because that can be embarrassing to the artiste that bought it.

Why? Because even if you do the best song in the world, you are not popular and may never be able to push the song to become a hit like an already established star would. Remember the Gobe story? The guy had the song online since like forever but it never became a hit.

Be wise my friend.

my dear friend, if he can not market. It well if he produces it , then do a colabo with the guy that offered to pay 5m, but if he disagrees and u know u can't market it well to get ur fame and money then sell it.

Please tell ur friend to recognize his talent as a Song Writer and sell the song. He would keep his day job, especially since he makes a lot of money there too. The artiste will definitely come back if/when the song is a hit and maybe others will as ur friend to write for them too. He can charge more money for the next song. Nigeria needs better quality of music.
Nobody knows about the writers of all d great hits but they are still enjoying their money.

Bro, as a rising artist, I would suggest he sells the song and Use the proceeds to promote his other songs cos I know and you know he has other great songs that could get him there..... A video with clarence peter's will cost him 1.5M leaving him him with 3.5M... Its always great to have atleast a video as that would propel him to heights then use the 3.5 to work on other songs and his image.

sell ASAP because you can do a song and another person can do the cover of your song and make it sound even more better than the original.

The chances of you making 500,000 Naira off your song are slim especially an unknown artist. I'd advice that you sell it fast.
