Woke up that bright morning, rushed to the office and quietly typed my resignation letter.....waiting to get alert for salary payment before i drop my letter. Trust me if i had submitted my letter before that day,i wonder how on earth i will be paid my last salary.
My boss will do everything to punish you for leaving the company,at least i learnt a lesson from the guys that left before me.
When i gave him the letter,he said OK with one mean and unfriendly expression,..hope you have dropped the company's laptop and properties in your custody.
For me i wasn't expecting anything different,at least i went with my money grin grin grin grin
So happy i left.
you made me remember where I first worked after youth service, @least 2 or more workers will drop their resignation letters every month end after receiving alert. I did the same when I dropped mine.

The environment was very friendly but I was overworked. After enduring for two more months I told my colleagues I'm resigning. The started cajoling and pleading, lol even going to the extent of saying I'm lazy and I just want to be sleeping and waking up. I had to use French school as an excuse.
Wrote a one-paragraphed letter to boss that I'm resigning, oga replied with a 3-paragraphed letter "granting" my resignation (like he has a choice) and wishing me the best in life. I still pop in once in a while to say hi and each time I go feel glad I resigned.

YoungExec:
Well, you all have shared ur experiences. Now let me talk from the other point of view.

Two things are constant:
1. Often times, we criticize the staff we find most valuable not because we hate them but becuse we expect better from them.
2. We invest time and resources into moulding them up. Often times we hire them as fresh inexperienced graduates and start brushing.

The problem a lot of people have is that they do not bring an air of professionalism to their jobs. They get too familiar or subservient to their bosses. Hence when you want to leave, the boss takes it personal. Sometimes too personal.

You may not realize it but the corporate space is not that big. Every boss knows another boss, who knows a boss that knows your new boss. An employer who feels slighted, who feels they invested a lot in you only for you to abandon them will track you. You will not know but trust me, it happens and sometimes, you may pay big time.

So bottom line is, I cannot employ you into my small company, see potential in you, groom and invest resources in you only for you to take it all and run to Shell or Chevron. That hurts. What happens is as you leave, you close the door of opportunity for the next person coming in to fill your position as I may not want to invest same.

Our HR dept keeps serious tabs on our staff and often let you go long before you decide to leave. How do we do so?
We have what we call the Base staff and the Echelon staff.

Base staff are dispensable, they are the muscles. Easily replaced. The moment a base submits a notice of resignation we do not hesitate to let you go.

Echelon staff on the other hand are the brains. They are the core. They posses full administrative and decision making powers. Without them, we will be out of business.

However, to ensure that we do not lose echelon staff:
1. We make it extremely attractive (Profit percentage pay, expense accounts, globe trotting, housing etc)
2. We make it extremely difficult to attain (high promotion review standards, acceleration for exceptional performance)
3. We make them stakeholders (they get stock options, full executive powers)

So far, it has worked and we have very low staff turnover simply because everyone sees the perks of being an echelon and aspires to attain it so they are willing to endure a lot of stuff until they get there.

My 2 cents.

I shocked my boss to the core with my resignation two years ago. I had only spent 2months at his coy and in the third when my previous boss called me back from redundancy i was sent a year before. I now had a better package with full house rent, furniture, car and 3x my previous salary.

My call back coincided with an a.s.s my boss placed as my supervisor. Just a week to my resumption date, my supervisor and i had a very hot exchange of words with him sending me threats. He had no idea it was perfect timing for me, next morning, i submitted my resignation letter. Boss was shocked, its been only 2months he stuttered! I cited irreconcilable differences with my supervisor and refused any plea of reconciliation. My HR a beautiful woman begged to know the real problem, i just narrated our fight and that i cant have a supervisor who has no business in what we do or our profession telling me what to do and how to do it. Imagine a chemical engineer friend of my boss's brother with no experience supervising a civil engineer in an estate developing coy.

I left happy knowing my 3week old supervisor would be questioned why their 2 month old civil engr left them citing irreconcilable differences with him. At the end, during their jist they will hear unofficially from my colleagues that i got back with my former employers with more than twice their offer.

I did not drop a resignation letter. After two months, my boss' secretary was still calling me to come collect salary.
Little did they know, what I am earning per month now can pay twenty staff salary in their firm. It is always good to explore possibilities - be adventurous.

Mine was a forced resignation o. Our boss wanted us to sign a 3yr bond with the coy&if u leave withing that period, you pay 2m to d org! For a one man biz,and one at that matter that you havnt really seen wats going on tangibly there, was a risk I cldnt afford o.I was d scapegoat as I was on the 1st on the list for those been appraised. And I was jus a front office person o with a salary that cldnt tak me halfway into the month. At a point after stalling him for so long that I want to seek a legal opinion,he got angry and said I'm joking with him, that I shd tender my letter if I can't sign the bond. I did send in my letter to him that I won't be able to sign the bond cos he's making me do that under duress and I get the feeling its modern day slavery. He called me into his office that day and smilingly explained to me ,evn gave me instances relating to govt 4yr tenure and school tenures, lol! Wetin concern tenure with bond signing. I told him I cldnt sign it evn wit all d explanations abt wat I'll benefit from the signing(na mouth o no paper work) even promised to up my salary frm 50 to 70k(for mouth too)
On my last day at work with them in Dec wch was his bday if u see as him eyes strong wen we enter go greet am hbd,cos I joined dem(afta all I was still his staff upto that point in time)
I felt pained leavin o,evn tho d salary wasn't worth it but I don't lik d idea of bond signing.
I later heard that he dropped d idea afta the staff started leavin one afta d oda. He's still my boss tho,I don't hate at all.
Meanwhile I still dey find work o,incase anyone has an opening for me*winks*

I can relate to your story, it's always so gaddam emotional but when I left the stupid bank I was in before, I was filled with so much joy.

You see, I have been one of the team leads in a business process automation units of one of the new commercial banks and for 5years, I stared at promotions in the face without getting any even though I kept getting recommendations from all the clients I satisfied.

I had just returned from one of my official trips to Kano and after briefing my group head, I dropped my letter the next day. Omo, come see negotiations. Involved HR and our line ED but I refused( to hell with banking, blood suckers tongue)

I left the unit with two other guys simultaneously, what a blow

I'm in the same sector presently and can't wait to do same soon, got any tip/advice? Its taking all the spare time I got and I'm planning to put a ring on someone's finger soon!

Inspiring, funny, educating stories all over..
Ma present boss is killing me to ma bone marrow.
Can't wait to leave ma present job..
Runs an ecommerce coy n he always like referring to when he was in the bank(top executive before retiring).
Always looks for an opportunity to reduce ur take home pay(peanuts)
After receiving employment letter, he included sales target(20percent off) in ma letter which he didn't inform me during interview...who give an IT staff sales target?
All the marketing/sales guys r jus collecting free money(same 20percent off) even with the target that he gave them...he's paying them over 100k and paying IT half the salary...
Can't wait to leave ma present job and give him the shock of his life...

I feel you bro. I had a target and kept praying and hustling for months. Every morning before I start my official duties, I spend at least 45mins to 1hr online searching for jobs. Jobber man and hotnigerianjobs became my best sites, not Linda ikeji lol.

Be resilient, never give up and might I add. Don't let the job hunt or pains affect ur work output at the moment, please.

Thanks for the Advice,
I give it my best and my senior colleagues know I do, but result (target) doesn't show i do, so I get frustrated.
I guess I'm not praying enough, I start that now.
Thanks once more!

It depends on your place of work if its most federal establishment you will have to inform them 3mnths prior to your resignation, also in the force you can't just leave they will set up a committee to look into your reason for resignation, they will also form an advisory council that will convince you not to resign. After everything you insist then they let you go after 3mnths. If you want to do it the hard way abscond and letter send their resignation letter and identity card, if thry do not see after 21days they declare you AWOL .
