Aircraft carriers is the major trend now in the naval world. Most developed countries navy aspire to operate this super weapon. Only the best of the best have succeeded in operating it and they are mostly superpowers or upcoming regional powers such as Britain, Russia, USA, Italy, Spain, France, Argentina, Brazil, India, China, Thailand and Japan.
No African country have used or even considered owning this due to its high cost and political significance. I heard Angola was considering buying one ex-Italian aircraft carrier for its small navy but other than that no other African country have ever taught of it. Which African country do you think will operate an aircraft carrier first in Africa? My best bet goes to Algeria, what's yours?
PLEASE ONLY SENSIBLE POSTS NEEDED AND NO DERAILMENT.

I am more interested in having an African nuclear state/power with enough ICBMs to cause some worry in western capitals ala Iran. . This continent needs some couple of nuclear weapons if she wants to see an end to the endless political/biological/military experimentations by the west all over Africa.

Black man is simply hopeless. You have no tap water in your homes, you have no electricity, you have no roads, malaria is killing you daily. And you are talking about aircraft carrier, worst of all you are talking of buying it. Those countries that have it, did they buy it?? They built it.

If human race hoped on the Blackman, smallpox, chickenpox, polio, cholera would have wiped the whole human race. Those that survived will be killed by the wickedness of a black man.

Rome was able to pipe water to their houses more than 2000 yrs ago. Up till today No african country can boast of delivering water to all their citizens. The Zoological republic of Nigeria's case is even worse, cause its monkeys and baboons that dwell in it.

Aircraft carrier indeed.

Disjointed argeument. China bought hers, likewise Thailand and co. Some bought old decommissioned ones and re-engineered, few countries biuld theirs. . You can only develope a secured state. Military gadgets scares off potential opponents/trouble makers thereby providing you with the peace and space needed to plan a developed future. Take a look at Libya, do you think the NATO hyenas would have destroyed that country, setting her half a century backwards if her military was up to par? Get a grip. This is not a luxury, these are necesslties.

South-Africa has no money. They cannot even afford to put their Gripen's in the Air.

Egypt can only afford an Aircraft carrier if their Arab brothers are going to pay for it, like the 24 Rafales been financed by Saudi-Arabia and Qatar they recently ordered.

This leaves out only one country, Algeria. Algeria is the only African country that can realistically afford an Aircraft carrier. The Algerians recently got Africa's first LPD, an Amphibious transport dock, more like an Helicopter carrier delivered to their Navy.

Algeria is currently the only African country that could afford and operate an Aircraft carrier, not the charade Angola is trying to pull off.

Aircraft carriers are 1. Technologically advanced war machinery. 2. Very expensive.

Having an aircraft carrier changes the whole layout of a countries military.

Can an african country afford an aircraft carrier ? Absolutely no!
5 years security budget of any african country can not buy an aircraft carrier. Buying one will mean that you don't spend anything on any other part of the military for 5 years . Dnt pay your soldiers for 2 years and ull probably not be be in government again .

Another reason african countries can't have an aircraft carrier is due to the level of technology one has to have to maintain one, african countries dnt have that technology nor will have it in the next 100 years.

Another reason is the cost of operation , u must have jet fighters capable of flying off an aircraft carrier for that ship to be called an aircraft carrier. Bet we know how much each of those plans cost .
Aircraft carries do not move alone , there are ships , battleships, destroyers, submarines , military satellites and high calibre missiles and weapons that go along with this ship at every point in time, without this , the ship is a sitting dock for even the weakest of the over 200 submarines and 1001 jet fighters all over the world . Not having that support group and ten years of ur military budget will be a home for deep sea animals in no time.

The most important reason why an african country cannot buy an aircraft carrier is politics and who will sell it for them.
The only country that has more than one aircraft carrier is the USA. The secrecy on the technology and capability of their ship will be compromised if they build or give one to any african country.
African countries cannot protect their missiles in their own country talk less of protecting the very dangerous missiles on an aircraft carrier.

Algeria cannot be allowed to have high level military equiptments cus it will attract Islamic hardliners who will plot to take over the government and use it .

and an aircraft carrier would protect us from terrorists like BH. For ur Information UK does not currently have an aircraft carrier. The debate in UK is there a need for aircraft Carriers.

If the poorest person in Northern Nigeria had 3 square meals, a good job, his children want to good schools, 24 hours light, 24 hours water, no police harrassment, his own decent accommodation, and other things people take for granted in countries like New Zealand, Norway, etc how many people would join Boko?

Afica get ur priorities right.

An aircraft carrier carries aircraft. We import aircraft.
We rely on nations with aircraft carriers to move aircraft for us
When those nations chose not to assist us, which is their right, like the US has, we begin wondering why we don't have weapons

we can solve the problem of reliance or continue to talk about malaria.

Now I know am dealing with a juvenile. You will park your aircraft carrier in Port Harcourt and fly the planes to Borno ? what's the point? when you have an airforce base in Makurdi.

Aircraft carriers are offensive weapons, when US wants to attack North Korea they send an aircraft carrier 4000 miles away from America. Tell me which faraway country is Nigeria likey to attack in the next 15 years?

Go and get a job, then talk to me

You m0ron!!!

The Nigerian military is designed to deal with threats that try to undermine the territorial integrity of Nigeria. They may come in the form of Chad in the 1980's, Cameroun in the 1990's or Boko-Haram. No matter the Aggressor, the military would have to deal with it with the appropriate equipment. If the threat requires an Aircraft carrier, the Government would purchase one.

You fvcking m0ron the british are currently building 2 Aircraft carriers in the Elizabeth carrier class. The brits in the Falklands war had Aircraft carriers, as it was the only means to get Air-crafts to that war.

America spends 700 billion dollars on defence each year, yet 30 million people in the U.S live in abject poverty, and millions live in the streets, homless.

Again another moronic comment from our resident village 1diot. Norway has no threat or doesn't even need a military, and the citizens live like kings, yet the Norwegian government has placed orders for 5th generation F-35 fighter jets.

New zealand doesn't need an Airforce because they Have a defence pact with Australia guaranteeing their security. Australia has over 100 state of the art F/A-18's and F/A-18 Super hornets. Australia has also placed orders for 5th Gen F-35 fighter jets.

You 1diot it was because Africa had no security, that was the reason why it could not defend itself against european invaders you fool.

India has 45% of it's population living below the poverty line, yet India has 2 Aircraft carriers and the world's 4th largest military.

Congo is one of the richest countries in the world. It has mineral resources which are worth trillions of dollars in value.

If Congo had the resources to defend it'self against the savage king leopold of belgium, the DRC wouldn't have been in this sad state.

Personally I don't see any African country buying an Aircraft carrier in the foreseeable future, a few Helicopter Carriers/Amphibious Assault ships yes, but an Aircraft carrier NO!

There are many reasons for this, but the most obvious reason is that, no African country needs an Aircraft Carrier at this stage, it would be a monumental waste of money!!

Well first off, your gripen statement is untrue

second, algeria spends over 4% of their gdp on defence - because they live in anvery unstable environment

If south africa were to choose to do so, we could and would easily be able to afford one.

Hell, if we placed defence spending at the same percent of our GDP we would be spending $2 billion more per year than they are

Not to mention that the aquisition of LHDs for the SAN is the next step to be taken after operation Biro - it is named Project Millenium
