PDP Board Of Trustees Appoints Haliru Bello Mohammed, Acting Chairman by talk2smat(m): 1:40am On May 26, 2015
The Board of Trustees of Nigeria’s ruling party, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has appointed a former acting national Chairman of the party, and ex-defence minister, Haliru Mohammed, as its acting Chairman. Mr. Mohammed’s nomination was endorsed Monday night by the PDP’s BoT at a meeting at the Aso Rock presidential villa, Abuja. Mr. Mohammed emerged against widespread belief that President Goodluck Jonathan would be assuming the position as he leaves office Friday.

Outgone Chairman of the BOT, Tony Anenih, had, while resigning last week, said he was vacating the office to allow Mr. Jonathan to assume the post. A former Customs officer, Mr. Mohammed served as a Commissioner, Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission in 1999, and later as Minister of Communication in 2001 under the Olusegun Obasanjo government.

He later became the National Vice Chairman of the PDP, North West Zone. In March 2008, he became the Deputy National Chairman of the Party and Acting National Chairman in 2010. Mr. Mohammed was appointed defence minister by President Goodluck Jonathan between 2011 and 2012. Lately, he was appointed by Mr. Jonathan to oversee his declaration for re-election. Mr. Mohammed was named in 2007 by German investigators as one of several Nigerian officials who received bribes from that country’s telecoms company, Siemens.

In its October 4, 2007 ruling against Siemen AG, the Munich State Court named Mr. Mohammed as one of the recipients of 77 hefty bribes paid by Siemen officials in three countries- Nigeria, Russia and Libya. The court said as minister, Mr. Mohammed received 550,000 euros in kickback in July 2002 and another 150,000 euros in August 2003.

If SE and SS have some sense, this development should be opposed at all cost.

Like I always say, Yorubas need to take Ibos under our wing and assist their understanding of political turfs and tact and how the two elements are crucial for victories and dominance.

So I stand on this belief that the politically matured and savvy Yoruba should assist in pointing to the inept Ibo where political advantages exist and how to aspire for it.

I want all Ibos reading this to share with their Ezes and Ohanaeze that their inclusion in APC rulership will be very marginal and they must accept it as reality of their own informed action. To every cause there is an effect.

I also would like them to come to terms with their new role as the opposition bloc. PDP had a dry turn out in the NE and NW. The only glory PDP have for saving face is in their count in the National Assembly. If we take a poll of PDP assembly members majority are South Easterners. Therefore we can propose a similar formula as with APC and suggest power sharing in the opposition must reward support base and victories. In that case SE should get a chunk of the leadership positions in the opposition party, BoT Chairman should then go to an Iboman.

So why has it been given to an Hausa from NW where PDP just had an abysmal performance? What merits NW getting rewarded for poor performance?

The answer is simple! When it suits their temperament, PDP shares power by zone. The last BoT Chairman Tony Anenih is from SS. Before him it was Bamanga Tukur, from NE. Before that it was Obasanjo, from SW. Now they have moved it to NW.

In the just concluded election APC as a ruling party is distributing power in equity to its support base and victories....not according to zone!

BoT Chairmanship in the hands of Obasanjo produced YarAdua and succeedingly Jonathan. Obj had a plan mapped out (there's no winning against Baba Iyabo) and he unfolded it successfully.

Bamanga followed suit and would have succeeded if it wasn't for Obj rocking the PDP boat.

So in the hand of a veteran politician and power player BoT is a powerhouse of immense dimensions and it is from here that the future of PDP performance in the midterm elections and the next general elections will be shaped. PDP has inferred that it is interested in fielding a Northerner against Buhari in 2019.

What is wrong with an Ibo candidate? Ibos just delivered for PDP, when do they get their reward?

Ibos must speak up and against picking Haliru Mohammed from NW for BoT Chairman. Get an Iboman in there.

Who is Haliru? Well, he's a man whose extradition to Germany is already in the brew.

PDP should stop this act of apponting and removing chairmen...to move forward they need stability at the topmost position, unity among its memebers, can they do this?...only time will tell

Haliru Bello was a fromer chairman and PDP dodged a bullet by appointing him.

If they had appointed a southerner, their fate as a SS/SE regional party would have been signed, sealed and delivered !!

Thought they lost all their sense of reasoning with their party's loss.... Also appointing someone with a pending case is not a problem for PDP, its "disloyalty" that is punishable by death.. Stealing is not corruption !!

...But as for PDP bouncing back to the center in 2019?? Not gonna happen!! Baba has to be worse than Jona+zuma for that to happen. smiley

When I told some people the PDP is founded, owned and controlled by the North, their clannish victories deceived them into believing they could hijack the party instead of building their own APGA. Well Haliru Muhammad must be thankful to all Igbos/SS for the PDP governors they voted in, who will be instrumental in the success of the northern PDP candidate for 2019 elections that will rule till 2027 if successful, since it's a tough region for northerners to ordinarily win.

why cant PDP appoint an Igbo man as the National Chairman?

we have no further stake at the PDP after the exit of Mr Jonathan on May 29th it will be to you tent oh Israel..

Atleast a South Easterner should take over the leadership of the PDP or a Niger Deltan

A president who concefed defeat wa would not be greedy to claim the BOT chairman because he knows the implication to the party's future. With the other relevant positions being occupied by the Southerners, we need a Northern BOT chairman. GEJ, I confide in your leadership. Carry go!
