Good morning everyone, I am an American naturalized citizen and currently a studying chemical engineering in the United States. My plan is to relocate to Nigeria after the completion of my program (plus an MBA) with the aim of working in a top oil and gas/petrochemical firm, as life in the U.S to me is "monkey dey work baboon dey chop".

Please I need your candid advise whether relocating to Nigeria is something reasonable. By the way I used to live in Lagos and Ibadan, I left Nigeria about 5 years ago so I pretty much still have a feel. Please Engineers in the house and my honorable people, I need your advise. Thank you.

Firstly, why would you finish you chemical engineering program and immediately get an MBA? Waste of money and time because that MBA will be worth shishi. IF you work for 5 years and then get the MBA, then ok, may you'll get some leverage. Since you are a nat citizen, then permit is not an issue. Currently, the oil industry is experience the usual cycle. Jobs are hard to get. IF you think it's hard in the US now, wait till you get to Nigeria. There are thousands of Nigerians with US degrees who went back because they couldn't get jobs in the US and don't have the necessary permits to continue living in the country. These are the people you will be competing with. You may get to Nigeria and not get a job for at least a year or more. The ones you get may offer you 100k or less. If you think you have connections, there 300 people out there just like you that also have connections. Also, you will be vieing for entry level jobs and you will have to take all these ridiculous aptitude tests. Short story, LOOONG tin. Stay your arse in the US and work for at least 5 years before you move.

you studied chemical engineering but have been looking for a job for two years ? what did they teach you in that school you went to ? you mean you cant use all the raw materials in nigeria to form your own manufacturing company as a chemical engineer ? you cant manufacture local fertilizer ? or anything ? walahi some of you dont need education. what you need is apprenticeship as soon as you leave high school

Well, it depends on what u are doing there and what u are coming to do here. Sure if u are working in a big firm with good pay there or u get a good job offer there with none yet in Naija, u won't need advice at all. Just plan very well. Not that u should come back, have a taste of Naija and start asking y u moved in the first place.

IT IS A GOOD IDEA BUT PRAY FIRST.DONT ASSUME BECAUSR YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES TO SUCCEED IT WILL BE AUTOMATIC
AFTER SPIRITUAL ENSURE YOU ARE SURE OF THE EMPLOYMENT.BETTER PEOPLE ARE HERE AHEAD OF YOU SO BE SURE OF COMPETITION..
ALL WHAT YOU MAY RELY TO KEEP YOU FLOATING BEFORE GETTING A JOB MAY NOT SUSTAIN YOU TO YOUR ANTICIPATED DURATION.
IF POSSIBLE HAVE A PLAN BE OF SELF EMPLOYMENT AND TEST RUN IT FOR ABOUT SIX TO TWELVE MONTHS BRFORE FINAL RELOCATION.
TEST THOSE YOU LEFT BEFORE ENTRUSTING YOUR LIFE ON THEM.SITUATION MAY HAVE CHANGED THEM.
WISHING YOU GOD'S GUARDIANCE

Good decision moreover I will want to bring to some situation and by then you will decides if you still want to relocate,As a chemical engineer yes you can easily get a job with your foreign certificate here cos nigeria believe so much in certificate from abroad,I will advice you why don't you work a little and gather experience there in america, say work for 2 or 4 yrs,by then u will apply as an expatriate and guess what they do to expatriate in this country they worship then and pay all their fees including their kids who want to come here.

Asides that you will need to get yourself high with lack of good transport system, electricity and all form of stuff peculiar to nigerians,is good you want to come back home, but my candid advice wait a little bro and watch what buhari will do.

Apply for the job online and be sure you have gotten it before relocating!

Very good advise!

@Op secure the job first, since you are home bred you won't find it difficult to blend.

We can't even tutor you on that.

Since you can go in and out of the US now with your family if need arises (for holidays, schooling for kids etc) having a good job/business in Nigeria is not a bad idea. So many people successfully do that.

You can do politics too. grin

Goodluck.

I would advise that you do it in phase - taste the waters before relocating down fully. Come spend like between 3-6 months at a stretch and see if you can cope from the 'withdrawal syndrome' the movement will throw at you.

All the best man.

When you finish your program, get a job in the US , garner some experience. Request your company transfer you to Naija. Some of these oil companies have offices in Nigeria.

Good luck cool

Not the case tho... He is only a graduate prolly doesn't have the money to set up business yet. But, The truth is there are lots of successful Nigerians in the State here. I agree with the fact that; If you have your money you can make it big there (TRUE) Both dont be deceived a lot os Nigerians are here too doing third hand Jobs (Making minimum wage) But then, there are lots of professionals who make real money. Those who make less will never tell you there are successful ones cos they want you to think everyone here is the same. This person is a Chemical Engineer like he/she said.... That's really big if he/she s saying the truth and that's a lot of money here. Especially in (Texas)..... Why would you want to go to a place that already has a lot of professionals. Job is hard to find in Nigeria to say the truth.... My own Advise is If u are saying the truth , This is where u can become big and then go back there and establish with your money... Gain Influence and then u can get urself into the Industry... With ur experience, Ur good!!!
eagleonearth:
Forget, if you have a viable business down here, what will you be doing on a foreign soil where your investment can go down d drain at any time. My great uncle who resides in the state told me how hard it is for a Nigerian residing over there to be affluent like d industrialists and moguls down here. Over there, it is comfort, sanity, good and working infrastructure that is at an average resident's disposal. Then, if you are a devoted christian and real African, the issue of the legalisation of gayism, lesbianism, etc will baffle you a lot because you will always see shit happen right b4 U and that's about all. We have not made mention of food commodities available to them which is far from african. My uncle came down here a while ago searching for cassava to eat as if his life depended on it. Bottom line is you can just be comfortable over there as a civil servant but down here a whole lot of business opportunities that can catapult you into opulence are open to U. The states is just good for vacation. My opinion though.

PS. Don't get discouraged coming down here provided you have a viable and promising biz.

Sexy moma you're too funny. grin cheesy.

But joke aside, some things can be tedious in 9ja sha.

I'm a diaspora gut too. There's comfort here but you have to work very hard to maintain it.
One feels like returning sometimes.

@OP
I visit 9ja frequently. It's always nice coming back home.
But my worry s that it's expensive to live comfortably in 9ja: you sink borehole/maintain, maintain gen, pay maiguard, repair cars frequently due to bad roads etc.

Coming from abroad to join job-seekers' queue is really not ideal.

If you can build a business in Biotech or some other area as a chemical engineer in Nigeria, that will be better. Returning to be an employee will just be another rat race.

But a well paid & secure job waiting before you return might be ok.

It would be easier if you are single & without kids.
