Good morning VISA officer.
I had my interview on the 11th of August for a J1 VISA for a Masters degree in the States (my sponsors insisted on J1 so I could be subject to the 2 year residency requirement).

My VISA was approved and I was told to pick up in 3 days. I went to the pickup center but my passport wasn't there. I emailed LagosNIV and they said some VISAs need more time, its still being processed and that they'ld contact me when its ready.

Its almost 2 weeks now and I haven't heard anythiing. I am so worried because I am already missing orientation and I have been given me until the 28th of August to arrive otherwise I lose a year and lose my full scholarship.

I thought the consulate was considerate of students and resumption dates but it doesn't look like that anymore

Please what can I do in my case?
Passport no: A04503391

Thankyou.

We are as considerate as we can be, but we must also comply with U.S. laws. If additional administrative processing was required we have no way of determining how long this will take. It is very unfortunate but is also one of the risks of waiting to apply for your visa until the last few weeks before you travel.

Dear VO,
Thanks for your reply. I noticed that someone in the thread had a similar situation and she got her passport after 10 business days.

I'm not under administrative processing, my status just says 'your passport is with the US consulate'.

I have asked for more time from my school so I all I can do is hope that it comes out this week.

Will update the forum on what happens, incase someone else has the same issue.

Have a pleasant day and thank you for your reply

No, to be dropbox eligible you must be renewing a visa within the same class.

Thank you.

Dear VO,

Please assist with this clarification. does an application for DV Visa lottery some years back has any role to play in visa refusal for non-immigrant in the present period. When we are still young and single many Nigerians participated in the process but now married with good work and other ties but the fact that we have shown intention earlier in those days for immigrant , will that affect our intention for family visitation during holidays even when we have gone to other Europeans countries for holidays in recent times?

Sure, everything can affect your current application. Just be honest about it. Plenty of folks who played the visa lottery have gone as tourists since that time.

Good morning VO,i know you people don't comment on personal questions, but i wish to know if it is a red flag to self sponsor one's trip for a conference in USA,i wish to attend a conference which i came across when i was researching online,i have saved enough to cover my trip, because i have been wishing to visit America for tourism purpose... I have paid for the conference already and with what i have been reading online, one's company must be the one sponsoring the trip if it is conference related... I don't want to lie in my application,if not can do without mentioning the conference on my DS 160 form. But i want to be honest as possible. Just want to know if i will be shooting myself on the leg by doing so

Self-sponsoring for a conference isn't a red flag. Failing to include that information though could definitely prompt some greater scrutiny during the interview, and that shouldn't be the first time we are hearing about the conference.

Groups of at least 10 members of the same organization are eligible to apply as a group. Keep in mind, this isn't for 'groups' that are going on vacation or families of 10 or more that are going to a wedding.

Hello @LagosNIV

I have an acquaintance who got married to a a friend of mine (She is a US Citizen).
he just got approved to move to the US to be with his Wife.
He is long separated from his Nigerian wife and shares custody of the daughter but her status won't be ready until December 2015.
He wishes to fill out an application for a visitor visa for his daughter to be with him so they can celebrate as a family rather than wait till December.
Unfortunately he only thought about this much later (too late) he is due to leave for the US this week and wants me to fill out the application on his behalf. then bring his daughter over when i am coming in next month with my family.

What documentation does he need to provide for me to carry along and make this happen smoothly . I plan to also make an emergency request to have the interview date moved up earlier in September so his daughter can come with us

Hello VO,

Thanks for helping folks out here. Please i need your urgent advice. I have a F1 visa from last year. I am going for a 9 month degree which i deferred till now. My school says i must apply for another one cos the dates on my I20 has changed but I had a hard time scheduling an interview and the closest date I got was 3rd of September even after expediting. School has already resumed and I would like to know what my other options are. Can I use the dropbox option and how do I do so?

Considering that i still have a valid F1 visa, can i use it and then return for the interview later in the year?

Dear VO,

Do we apply via drop box or go through the normal interview?. Let me give you a little background story of what formed my question.

My 3 year old daughter and i got a visiting Visa (BIB2) in Sept. 2013 and we were to visit for 13 days. i became sick and could not travel as planned but fortunately for me 'the sickness' was a good one (was trying for a second child then). We eventually postponed the trip until when i got better and also for my daughter to be able to be a little bride to my friend who lives in Houston....the one we were going to visit. The wedding was close to my delivery period and we decided to kill several birds (visit, wedding and delivery) with the same stone.

We succeeded after we were detained for long at Houston airport by the immigration officers and by God's intervention we were allowed.

Now to my question, our Visa will be expiring in September and we are planning another visit, however, i would not want to go through the same ordeal. Considering that i am ready for another baby (not pregnant yet) and would like to have the next one in the US (enjoyed the treatment i got at the hospital and my doctor was very nice and cool). I will like to get a Visiting Visa as i am planning to take my kids on Vacation and also paradventure i get pregnant i will like to be able to use same Visa to have a baby in the USA again.

What route should i go? The Drop Box or regular interview?.

Well, for starters, we are going to want to see documentation that you are the child's legal guardian. It will probably just be easier to have the child come in with her mother because if there is any degree of discomfort with the information you are or aren't able to provide then it is unlikely to result in a visa issuance.

You would have to check when appointment dates are available at your interview location to make that determination.

I don't understand what you mean by deferring until now - did you never go to school? And now that it has already started you are trying to get back? You may want to consider applying to another program in the future because there is a strong possibility that you will get turned around at the border based on the information presented.

A regular interview may be a better option so that you can explain your case and have it reflected in the notes. CBP reads the notes that the VOs enter into the system during your interview. There is a good chance that you would be called in ayways if you tried to go through dropbox.

Team12:
Dear VO,

Thank you for this opportunity created to allow applicants table their issues before you and for the selfless job you are doing here.

I am in a very dicey situation and i need assistance.

I applied for a B1/B2 visa with my husband and daughter (3 years old) and on the date of application, the available date was 8 September 2015. I had to select that date because that was what was available.

But I recently got a study permit to study in Canada for the next 1 year and I will be going with my 3 year old daughter (she also has her Canadian visa). School resumes 1 September, but I plan to travel 5th September, as a result, I decided to reschedule our appointment to an earlier date.

In the process of rescheduling, I cancelled the appointment for 8 September for the three of us and was able to get 26th August date, but then I realised that I could only access 2 slots for the date. In order not to lose the date, I scheduled it for my husband and I, with the hope that something will come up for my daughter before the interview date (26th August).

We all attended the interview today and my husband and I got our visas approved, but my daughter could not be attended to because she had no interview date.

I am now very worried, because we are supposed to travel to Canada next weekend and I still don't have a date for her (we applied for the USA visa because we plan to spend Christmas holiday in the USA and thought it wise to apply from our home country-Nigeria). The earliest appointment date as at today is sometime in November.

I have checked the requirements for an expedited appointment but I don't meet the requirement. The closest I saw was eligibility as a student, but that only applies to students of American Universities.

Is it possible to for my daughter to be interviewed at a date earlier than the date for her scheduled interview (In which case I will quickly book the November date and take her for the interview next week), given the circumstances? If not, please advise on other options to get this resolved.

Many thanks for your response!

Unfortunately, there are many people in similar situations so we can't bend the rules in one case while not doing so in the others. It would be possible to apply for the visa while you are in Canada as well and may be something that you want to consider.

You would apply for a B1/B2 tourist visa like anyone else who wants to visit the U.S.

There is a strong possibility, especially given the ongoing revocation of the K-1 visa, that you will not be successful, though.

They did individual applications as they are not up to a group. Only one of them was able to get interview slot. They have been trying since last week for both Lagos and Abuja but the earliest is Nov 3 and 18 respectively.
What can they do? Their company is a government parastal

They can attempt to request an emergency appointment. The instructions are on the U.S. Embassy website.
