I had to mention you so you could see and reason with me. it's a good idea but at the same time it will do more bad than good.
In as much as anyone is not forced to give out money then there is no need for that. No one know or have my account details and I can't be so gullible to give out what I can't afford or what I will regret..lets think about those whose cry for help are genuine. My 10 naira could save a life, make someone fulfil their dream or attain their potentials. Like the yoruba saying.
Ta ba ni ki a diju ki Eni buruku koja enire na a koja.
Meaning: if we decide to close our eyes in other to avoid seeing or sighting the evil doer we might as well still have the eyes closed when a good person would pass. Thanks

Anything that happens in the real world, including seeking for help and funding, must not be restricted here. People with genuine concern must not suffer because of the activities of a few fraudulent ones. Come o, Seun, if you do that, what will be the difference between you and those policemen who thinks that every young man going to the cyber cafe or using a laptop is a yahoo boy?

Seun. What of those of us always looking for who to help on Nairaland?

How do we find them when you ban people from soliciting for help/ funds?

The last hope of any genuine Nairalander looking for financial help is Nairaland.

Why do you want to take it away?

Scammers are in all sections of Nairaland even Romance section. Do you then say...You will ban soliciting for relationships on Nairaland.

Creating Awareness On Scam Prevention and Prosecution is what Nairaland needs.
Not banning genuine help seekers because of Scammers.

My Thoughts.

I support your thoughts.
As usual Seun and his band of meoderators ignore root causes and kill flies with sledge hammers.
If someone comes out to openly solicit for funds, it is down to the givers to investigate before giving.
Besides, no one expects you to give more than you can afford to give out. So even when scammed in terms of charity no big deal.
I have seen posts asking for help that i thought the tales did not add up, i simply moved on. No biggies.
The more worrying one is the idea of having a sales pitch as a signature.
You see someone reply to a comment with just 'ok' while the whole page is filled with a sales pitch of some item completely unrelated to the topic. Why are they not banning such?

Objection. Sounds draconian to me. People should be able to solicit for funds and donate to genuine fund seekers without infringement. undecided

The fact is that, scammers have utilized this technique as their means of scamming. Members complain about getting scammed almost every day and such a thing is bad for this forum.

If there's another way to quench this menace, your opinions are highly welcomed.

What sort of opinion do you require from me? Even God who is in charge of the affairs of billions of people worldwide said " BE KIND, GIVE, HELP, BE HOSPITABLE, LOVE".. NL isn't even up to 2 million humans yet and we want to resort to wickedness because of same scammers?

If someone solicits for help and another chooses to help it was a choice made and executed. Can we really judge morality? The other day on NL fp a story of how Naeto C helped a guy who asked him for school fees was treated. Why didn't he frown at that or further probe d guy prior to blessing him with 100k? I would have done same in a snap. I would even rather advocate that we do more if and when we can

Yes Seun, HIGHLY SUPPORTED, scammers will want nothing more than to take advantage of the system. If someone needs financial assistance there are BETTER ways of going about it than coming on a 'faceless' forum to ask for money...not good.
Re: Rule 22 Against Asking For Money On Nairaland by Nobody: 6:55pm On Sep 20, 2015
Dissently, you shouldn't! Some have genuine reasons mayb transaction/business wise. . You should just try to create a section meant mainly for money cases, asking, paying for any transaction orderwise done else banning as punishment. . This section should only be restricted to money-like activities, any contrary poster of money-like posts elsewhere should attract ban , using only this section curbing scammers will easily be effected.

Put up links to just three threads since the inception of nairaland where anybody was scammed thru donations.

There's a difference between doing business with a scammer and making donations. The latter is what the topic is about now.
You're right.

Seun, despite the fact that I'm in support of this move, the disadvantages is more than the advantages. Although, whichever decision you arrive at would be gladly welcomed.

the rate of joblessness in 9ja is becoming alarming,we as a forum should create room where interested and reliable minds can join for weekly contribution(AkAwo or turn by turn contribution) with this,we can drive away poverty and careless spending to an extenT.

That will be serious work verifying every claim of someone that needs help. It will amount to Mr. Seun dedicating the whole of his lifetime to Nairaland. Not feasible ma'am.

Omotayor123:
Yes Seun.. What about those Nairalanders that might truly need help Any special plan for those.?

I propose you verify the claim of those that makes such request before endorsing the donation. Besides, it's a donation I.e "willingly and not compulsory". We shouldn't stop those that want to help from helping!

I had to login just to post, seun , like many said, nairaland has evolved into a community-like forum, and as such ppl will always b around looking for assistance one way or another, instead of cutting d head because of d headache i.e banning lending totally, I suggest u find another way to checkmate these scammers, like come up with a verification method, or even making TEHN official, I mean, NL has helped a lot of ppl wen dey were down n out, reconsider.

People get help through any means. Everything under the sun is susceptible to human abuse. Should we stop helping others because of a few abusers of kindness?

Mr Seun, if you won't give money to the needy, don't also restrict others from doing so. Let those who offer money be led by their conscience and commonsense.
Re: Rule 22 Against Asking For Money On Nairaland by wytecat: 6:57pm On Sep 20, 2015
Seun, that's the only human face to this forum, and must be left alone.

Nairaland is a village and no village is complete without a wing of compassion.

There are genuine needs out there, nobody is forcing anyone to give, let those who love to give to the needy, do so.

Going further on my first post Seun I honestly do not think you have any right interfering with our free will giving and our acts of kindness. We are humans and being kind is one of those things that make us so. You on the other hand should be very happy and overwhelmed at the number of people your forum has genuinely helped your proposal above shows YOU JUST DON'T CARE.

I'm out
.

You are not being fair on Seun, please take it easy the man only asked for our opinion he could have done whatever he wanted to do without letting you know. Have you ever been scammed before? i guess not, if you have your perspective will change. NL is someone's business, yes it's a community, but he owes it to us to create a safe forum. Yes we want to help people, but how do you genuinely verify cases? I personally saw a post where someone was asking for help, i was interested, but after checking i discovered the person was not genuine(health forum). Maybe if Seun and the mods can find a way of verifying cases it will be good, but that means giving them more work.

Ti a ba di oju ki eniburuku ko ja, a ni month igba ti eni rere ma koja pelu (if we shut our hearts to ppl cos of the bad one's, we won't know when to help the genuine one). Making a rule to stop it won't stop scammers from defrauding some ppl still. There should just be a limit to our generosity. (Ore niwon)

We have no really reliable way of distinguishing between genuine needs and those that are not genuine, so I would appeal to people with such needs to rely on other channels of support such as their family members , friends, and churches.

This is very mean coming from a man who got his wealth with the support of readers who are not family to you.
What if the family members or church can't help? You are a christian i suppose?Didn't the bible asked to help our neighbours?

We are a family here and if the help is not genuine,we always find out.We have people who verify those claims and personally i have never came across anyone claiming to be defrauded by rendering help rather purchasing stuff.

Please you need to cool down with your attitude towards donations,i don't know why it is a problem for you.

This is not cool.

I agree with banning personal soliciting. Anyone with urgent need can go through tehn. When they verify his/her case, then they announce it and people can donate as moved.

I'm not negating the fact that rendering help is a bad idea. Even I cannot see someone in need of help and turn a blind eye to it, however, the fact that seun made this decision public is because he wants our view, he wants our opinions, even though alot of things are at stake here.

He is in a tight situation, whilst some members complain daily about getting scammed daily, plus it is really disheartening to see you lots considering only the people that are seeking help, thereby not finding a way to stop this scammers from operating on Nairaland.
Re: Rule 22 Against Asking For Money On Nairaland by Acidosis(m): 7:04pm On Sep 20, 2015
What's the objective of the proposed rule? To protect Nairaland's reputation?

Everybody should be free to solicit for financial assistance. Whoever give wrongly to a scammer has done so according to his/her level of mugu-ness. Let people help if they wish to, and let them fall mugu if they so wish to.

However, do not ban the freedom of users to GIVE.

If you really want to protect the site's reputation, then get involved more on Business to Business deals. A man who falsely and fraudulently advertise a car on Auto section should be completely banned, but a man who fraudulently or truthfully solicits financial assistance (from those who want to give) should be given the platform to attract those who have the time to verify and give accordingly.

You don't need to involve yourself with charity; in fact no one can force you to give since Nairaland isn't a charity forum, but let those who want to give GIVE!

In order to protect your reputation, do not involve yourself with verifications/confirmations so no one will come back to say Mr. Seun Osewa ordered us to GIVE. People should be free to make their requests known whether it is accommodation, job, money or food stuffs, etc.

You have my solid support on this one Seun especially as it will assist us the moderators in flushing out scammers from the forum. However, i suggest ban should not be place on genuine donations. for example, helping a nairalander in need of serious medical attention, as long as it has your consent and you are able to scrutinize the whole process. who knows, Nairaland itself may need donation from its members someday. I'm just thinking loud...no hard feelings wink
