Why do people act like illiterates in the heat of the moment? Where in the world do doctors write referral letters without seeing the patient? It is the duty of the doctor that is making the referral and he eventually did it. I'm not even sure they needed any letter since she was involved in an accident. All these kind of things happen when there are too many people trying to make decisions at the same time. Noone is ready to take responsibility. I once witnessed a ridiculous scene. A guy was stabbed and was bleeding seriously. He could no longer stand on his own and the people there were making arrangements to take him to a police station. I asked why and they said they needed to get a police report. To get to the police station is about 30 minutes drive to the right while there was a general hospital less than 10 minutes drive to our left. I made them realize how stupid they were and told them to take him to the hospital while some of us went to the police station to report the case. By the time we got to the hospital with a police officer, he was already in the emergency ward receiving blood. People should learn to remain calm in emergency situations.
brilliant,as regards this case the doctor was not faulty as regards his refusal to write the letter, would only blame him if he didn't permit the use of the schools ambulance to convey the Lady, you have said it all bro,the problem is with decision making, the greater blame is on the sug president,if the doctor even refused the use of the ambulance,it should have been taken by force, you don't follow protocols in cases like this, but the truth is,our medical practitioners don't value life like they ought to,they wouldn't bulge unless you pay up before they attend to critical situations a times,I once witnessed a kid convulsing but the doc insisted on payment before treatment,I once had an experience too,had a car crash and was taken to the hospital, the doc didn't even bathe a lid, until I paid for the card,it was when he was stitching me up and ma sis(a nurse in the hospital)came over that the doctor uttered the most annoying word,he was like he didn't know we were siblings hence he would have attended to me earlier than that,I believe this nonchalant attitude is the cause of cases like this, rip to the young lady.

It is with an heavy heart that we announce the passing on of Hon. Maria Atere, a 400 level student of Plant physiology and Crop production.

She was involved in an accident along Camp- Sch gate road, Ogun-Osun axis. her bike was hit by a car. She was immediately rushed to a Hospital at camp 'Ideal clinic', the doctor on seeing her condition told the Funaabite that accompanied her that she needed to be taken to Federal Medical center Abeokuta. The Funaabite in turn contacted Funaabsu President who sent some of the Excos with the Union bus to check on her, while he went to the school's health center to get a referral letter for Hon Maria to be taken to FMC, but the Doctor instead asked that she should brought to the Health center before he can issue any letter. The President explained to him that it was a critical situation and that bringing her to the Health center was going to result in time wastage, the doctor didn't bulge and refused to write the letter.
The doctor at Ideal Clinic instead wrote the letter and she was conveyed to FMC with Funaabsu bus, along with Ogun Nans Bus instead of the school's Ambulance. The bus got there within 10mins.
She was announced dead moments after she was taken to FMC.
An hour later after we had lost Hon. Maria, the school's Ambulance called that they were at camp.

It would not have taken the Doctor at the school's health center to write a referral letter and order the school's Ambulance to take her there.
The negligence by our University Health center must stop.

Greatesr Nigerian studenrs, there's going to a be protest by Funaab student union at the University Gate tomorrow by 6am. Please let us all come out en mass.

But some of our Nigerian Students are clowns sha

How can a doctor write a referral letter for a patient he has not yet seen? or examined?

This goes beyond 'doctor bashing' and in the realms of 'gross stupidity'

You should refund your school fees to your parents and take up carpentry. I don't think you're intellectually equipped enough for cerebral work.

There is no way your bus will get to FMC from alabata or camp on 10mins.

That being said: you guys are too docile.. You dnt need a fucking referral for emergency either at the FMC or the State hospital at ijaye. The state hospital is well equipped for emergencies. You guys wasted time.

What if the lady had the accident and was taken directly to FMC? Will they ask for a report from ur doctor in school?

You shld av took her from there straight up to FMC and u dnt need to even say she's been somewhere.

What a bunch of .....

RIP jare. Ure now blaming the health center for common sense u shld av used.
hmmm soo, true, itz because very human for UNAAB to like unnecessary protocol. but again, she needed the attention of any available doctor to stable her condition abit, so stopping off at the clinic doesn't look like a bad decision to me

the distance from where the accident occurred to the ideal clinic is way shorter than the distance from the scene to the school health centre.. and even the distance to the school health center is like going back........ like farther away.... so that clinic is infact in the middle. .. . Between FMC and the school clinic.....

My thoughts. ..
Of course I know administration et al... having to verify the studentship and all... but arent doctors suppose to be compassionate. ..? I mean are the doctors been bred in Nigeria animals. ..? Even if the doctor at the clinic insisted on the referral letter from the school health center why didn't he or she write initially when the SUG students got there... those minutes would have probably saved her life.... the doctor tried cause the right thing to do was what he or she requested for...

Now to the doctor at the health centre.... what stopped the doctor from following the students to go verify the lady... ? And giving the doctor the go ahead to write a referral letter just to get her to the medical center. ... then they both later sort out the administrative letters....

Like I said it still bores down to compassion. .... so to any doctor who lacks compassion and passion while practicing this profession I say Fuc......k you....

Fuc......k Medical Doctors.. . Blee...p you all for wasting a life....

Any Medical Doctor Who quotes me you can go to hell...

Even if the bone of contention was on the use of ambulance. .. the doctor could have accompanied the ambulance to the clinic and then go back...

Obviously she died as a result of wasting of time...

if the SUG students had probably been briefed properly by the doctor... cause now we have obviously been enlightened that they didn't need a referral letter. .. then she would have still been alive....

the school health centre don't demand for medical card at all times even in non-emergency cases and moreso, the card no is part of the smart Id card so that way, card is uneccessary. Anyways, the clinic should have provided the ambulance quickly

May her soul rest in perfect peace.

#the doctor at the school's health centre would have committed a crime to write a referral letter wtout seeing the patient. He is not to be blamed for anything. It should have been the 1st doctor's duty to write a referral letter wtout wasting time, besides its an accident and emergency case, she could have been taken to FMC immediately wtout any letter.

Of course, nt even only in school clinics but also in hospitals. I think health workers need a re-orientation on handling emergency cases and d government needs to equip hospitals with state-of-the-heart facilities and ambulances because doctors cannot give more than what they have. Also, we as individuals need to learn administering first aid esp to accident victims('where there is no doctor' is a good book) because mishandling is like adding salt to injury. Above all, this death would have been averted in developed countries.
