Now to the doctor at the health centre.... what stopped the doctor from following the students to go verify the lady... ? And giving the doctor the go ahead to write a referral letter just to get her to the medical center. ... then they both later sort out the administrative letters...
Please clarify the above. Not very sure what you are trying to say here

duduade:
Even if the bone of contention was on the use of ambulance. .. the doctor could have accompanied the ambulance to the clinic and then go back...

Some of you think a Dr is like a generator mechanic that can be called out whenever required.

My position on this:

1) The doctor at the University clinic can not give a referral for a patient he did/has not sighted. That would be very very risky if dares that.

2) The patient should have been taken to FMC by any available fast means, including the student union bus rather than waiting for one ambulance that might not even have fuel in it.

We always call for increased funding and all... even the little infrastructure we have ain't properly managed. The most annoying part is the sloppiness of some medical personnels... We need ppl committed to their call of duty. There was an accident involving a student Of d institution u work in, wat stops paramedics from d sch, from taking emergency response...? That doc needs to be sanctioned. RIP miss!

Another day....and another ''Let's blame the Nigerian doctor '' show

Before I write.....RIP to the lady.

1.The lass was knocked down by a car whilst being a passenger on a bike. Potential injuires include head injury, leg injury, and spinal injury. All of which can cause death in minutes.(Massive internal bleeding)

2.I wonder why she was not immediately taken to FMC. Mulitply injured patients are not just taken to some clinic. The FMC would have taken her without a referral letter.....and if they do not....then sme people have a lot to answer for.

3.Sorry to sound crass....but the way she was transported to the hospital could have contributed to her death.

In transporting patients injured in a car accident....you immobilise them first. In Nigeria.....where there is no suitable ambulance service...we just transport them anyhow. And if you do that....you might worsen the injuries....especially if there is a neck injury.

4.Conclusion....the girl did not die because of a delayed referral letter. She died because

a) No ambulance , and no paramedic staff to stabilise her.....and to transport her properly

b) Delay in getting her to a tertiary hospital.

5.Addendum.....referral letters are issued ONLY if the doctor gave the patient some treatment....and did some initial assessment ,,,so that the colleagues on the other side know about any past treatment....which helps in subsequent management of the patient. In this case....they did not need the referral letter at all really.

I know some of my colleagues are bad......but this Nigerian doctor bashing is getting too much. Better vote for and make your leaders improve funding and planning for healthcare in Nigeria too.

1.There are no proper paramedics(a paramedic is not a doctor...roughly speaking he/she is a nurse trained in emergency care) in Nigeria (That is slowly changing...but for now, only oil companies seem to have paramedics.).

That leads us to the horrible state of emergency medicine in Nigeria....but if I was to talk about that, it would be a loooong post. However, there is some talk of making emergency medicine one of the subjects offered for residency training in our hospitals....as is seen in Ghana and Ethiopia for instance.

2.The young lady could have been immediately taken to the FMC. I wonder who made the decision to take her to a clinic where the doctor cannot handle the case because he/she has no equipment/training/specialists. And you do not need a referral letter to be admitted in any hospital including FMC'S. (Where I work, I do not even ask for referral letters before treating.....if it is there, good, if it is not there...no problem...we can still get a good history).

3.Note that the patient was not taken to the University health care center.....she was taken elsewhere first. That was mistake number one.....she should have been taken to a tertiary hospital IMMEDIATELY. Mistake number two was wasting time looking for a referral letter at the university health care center.....when the lady HAD NOT BEEN TAKEN THERE. No doc would write a letter for a patient he or she has not seen.....if you do that, that is a nice way to get the Medical Council to seize your practising licence....and it is also very risky from a legal point of view. (Assuming the case gets to court....the doc could be accused of lying. Oops).

So in short....she should have been rushed to the FMC.....immediately. And the Doc at the University medical center did the right thing by not writing a referral....when he had not seen any patient. So.,....what sanctions?

4.Finally....the funding issue is so that we can have ambulances., hospitals ,paramedics, and what not.

Here is how a similar case was treated in the UK.

A young boy broke his leg at school. The emergency services were called. An ambulance arrived in minutes. Paramedics stabilised the boy. A helicopter ambulance was called for....which transported the boy quickly to the nearest available hospital....as determined by a dispatcher at a central office.

That is why we call for funding.

It is quite a sad event...may her soul rip n God grant her family the strength to bear the loss.
But I beg to differ with the op...a referral letter for a patient is written by the doctor who attended to n examined the patient. Just because the doctor works in the university health center,he is now deemed fit to write a referral for a patient/student whom he never attended to. As a doctor, if I was in his position I would have probably have done the same cos I have a license to protect.
Moreover, her life might have been saved if she was rushed to FMC,Abeokuta at the 1st instance where the best hands and equipments would have been on ground.

Oga, truth be told; not Some of your colleagues are bad, Majority of them are bad. There are two points of view to the medical profession- the view of the healthcare giver and the view of the healthcare receiver. You may be a doctor, but not a patient. Ask patients to tell you their opinion about majority of Nigerian doctors, and you will be shocked. Even medical students know.

No offence....but have you done a survey of perceptions of the general public about Nigerian doctors?

Anecdotal evidence is not necessarily factual evidence.

(And believe me....at least I would be interested in the results of such a survey!).

Authorities of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), have described as unfortunate and a great loss, the sad demise of Miss Maria Modupe Atere, a 300-level student in the Department of Plant Physiology and Crop Production, College of Plant Science and Crop Production (COLPLANT) of the University.

According to a statement by Mrs Emi Alawode, Head of the University’s Directorate of Public Relations released today, the 22-year-old student was on a commercial motorcycle when she was knocked down by a car, along the Camp-Alabata road, around the Ogun-Oshun River Basin Development Authority (OORBDA) gate, in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

However, Alawode noted that contrary to what she described as unfounded allegations of negligence made by some individuals against the University, “Atere was never brought to the University Health Centre for treatment, hence, no doctor had the opportunity to quickly examine her and arrive at a decision on the most appropriate form of medical treatment.” Nevertheless, she stated, the University ambulance was despatched to the private clinic at Camp, when a request was made.

She added: “ When the sad incident occurred, some Good Samaritans brought two unidentified victims of the accident to a private clinic at Camp. Miss Atere was later discovered to be one of them. She was given first aid treatment before being referred to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abeokuta, for better medical attention due to the severity of the injuries sustained. Unfortunately, she passed on.”

Meanwhile, the institution’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olusola Oyewole, has approved the immediate constitution of a committee to investigate the circumstances that led to the unfortunate incident.
The statement partly reads: “Management sympathises very deeply with family members and the entire University community, praying that the infinite God grants everyone the much needed fortitude to bear this really painful loss.”
