Inikpi of Igala: Buried alive to save her father's kingdom: Decades after sacrificing her life to restore her land, the Princess Inikpi statue located at Ega in the heart of the Idah market in Kogi state (formerly Benue state) still represents an important historic event in the life of the Igala people. Today, so many people in Idah bear the name Inikpi in honor of the princess. It is now part of history because it happened: There was war between the Bini kingdom and the Igala people. No house was safe. No markets were safe. Even the streams were women and children would fetch water from or have a bath were not safe. The Igala people's stream was poisoned so that anyone that used the water on the day would die. Fear griped the Igala people for a long time. When the oracle was consulted, it said that their victory could not come unless the princess was buried alive to prevent the inevitable destruction that was hanging on the Igala kingdom during the war with the Binis. Attached photo is the statue of Princess Inikpi on top of her grave right in the center of Ega market of dah in Igala Land. Till this day, sacrifices are still made at the shrine on regular basis. Hello, I'm new on here and trying to learn the Igbo language. I'm Nigerian but grew up in US, somehow I just don't speak it. Èdè abínibí wa tọ́sí ìgbélárugẹ (Dialects worth being valued like English) English language is meant to be in sync with the other three officially recognized indigenous languages in Nigeria but it is quite very unfortunate that the language introduced by our colonial Masters has now been priotized and given too much value at the expense of our mother tongues. China has seven main dialects comprising of Mandarin (官話), Cantonese (廣州話, 廣府話), Hakka (客家話), Wu (吳語), Min (閩語), Xiang (湘語), and Gan (贛語) and today China is competing with United State of America as second world largest economy to become the largest economy in the World without ignoring their dialects in the course. The indigenous Language discrimination in Nigeria is the major Challenge we face in communication and learning as many prefer the vast dominating English language to their mother tongue instead of utilizing them simultaneously. To worsen the situation, we have been brainwashed to regard persons who speak their mother tongues as.... RedCapChief:Ibile-traditional or local at times. E.g. Adiye Ibile means local fowl, aso Ibile means traditional clothe Itesiwaju-progress. E.g. itesiwaju eko ni mo fe means I want the progress of Lagos Gbayi-I don't really know how to explain this but I'll try. Gbayi was derived from "wagbayi", "iyi" itself means fame/recognition, so wagbayi means "you'll be famous/recognized" while "gbayi" is just a way people short it IMO. It is mostly used to praise/thank people after a job well done What does "obiego" mean in english |

SuperSuave:Obiego literally means Heart of money. Obi = heart. Ego = Money. Although, I must confess I haven't heard the term or phrase used before. Are u sure that was what was said? Obego = it has finished/ended. Also adding or removing tonal marks may change the meaning 1 Like |
