STORY!!
she only got a driver's permit.
this means she cannot drive without someone with a driver's license in the car.
That is like learner's permit in naija!
angry when did drivers permit and license and learner's permit get involved in this discussion.
I just mentioned she started learning how to drive when she was 16 and you are talking abt driver's permit.

People get involved in accidents everyday, both the skilled and unskilled.

Thank you so much for your words of wisdom. However, all these ones una dey talk na story. NONE of my kids will get behinds the wheels of a car before they turn 18. If they don't like it, they should force themselves to like it. Whether Ronaldo joined Man U at 2 years or whatever, dat one no *consign* me.

I'm going to be a very protective mom, they have their whole lives to be driving cars and whatever they want to drive, but for someone less than 18, knowing how to handle an automobile is not on the list of my top 10 priorities for your life at that point!
Just so you know, protective mums give rise to sneaky children... Don't teach them and they'll learn somewhere else, except u're omnipresent or plan to guard them 24/7

a 15 years old boy should be in his ss2-3...a boy should learn the basics of driving by then..any guy who disagrees with the op is still either a 'Learner' or a complete novice..the importance of learning how to drive early can NOT be overemphasized...at 15 a boy/girls brain can do much more complex tasks than driving..

This is actually an illegal thing to do. If the child is being taught how to drive a car at that age he/she will ultimately attempt an adventure with the car with can sometimes lead to serious consequences.
That's not proven. That's the same kind of mentality that makes parents think teaching adolescents about sex would encourage them to experiment.

There nothing back in teaching kid how to drive before 18. What is bad is letting them drive before 18. Atimes, parents could be so tired from the day's work that to warm a car or park it might become a chore(speaking from experience). I learnt driving before 18 but doesn't mean I started driving at 18.

Teach your kids how to drive at 15? The human being that made the minimum age18 wasn't in his right senses? Some people sef, this is so not safe!

Why don't you let him fly an airplane? angry
I don't quite agree with you, 15 is not a bad age to start, the brain is mature enough. I started driving when i was barely 14,by the time i was 15,i was out on major roads. It reduced my mom's workload cos i was running major errands for her and gave me the experience i have today and it even helped during my I.T cos my boss took a liking to me as he could send me anywhere. Lets leave story,If we had better quality of life, you wont have that opinion.

I didn't want to comment on the thread but LadyF the op is not wrong. He said he would teach his kids how to drive as a teenager that's a good thing if you ask me. I learnt how to drive when i was very young and to tell you the truth it was difficult because i had to learn it on my own. My dad never supported me, in fact he warned me never to but you know what i still learnt anyways by stealing his car keys any time he is not around. I spent a lot of my pocket money on fuel and minor repairs because i don't really go far from the house and i was lucky not to bash anyone's car even though my area was a two way traffic flow(seem more difficult to drive on this kind of roads as a learner ). But the exciting part of the whole thing is there was a time the family wanted to go on a trip to ibadan and our driver then couldn't make it (pulled out at the last minute), there was no one to drive and the trip couldn't be cancelled and my dad doesn't drive long distance because of health issues. I took the keys started the car and assured my dad i could do it, prior to that he has only seen me warm, wash and repark the car ( which to him was nothing). He thought about his options for a moment (even though he didn't seem to have much), gave me the go ahead with his heart in his hand and we drove down to ibadan and arrived safely. That was my first long distance and the beginning of many more (in fact the keys to the cars were in my custody all the time) and you know what? i was just 15 years old then. Up till today, he prefers my driving to any of my siblings or any other person. So yes it's a good thing but i know a lot of parents will look at the negative part first ( accidents, bash someone's car, spoil the car, etc) and most of all fear of letting a teen drive but i think i go with the op. Teach them how to drive and if they are brave give them the opportunity and your support and you would be amaze at what they can do knowing fully well that they have your support. And like someone mentioned start by allowing them take you to church (since you are with them in the car it will be easier to know were they are weak and help them improve).

NB: If you think your teenager is too young to learn or drive, you should check out this kid on instagram her name is Lila skye kalis i think her handle is lila_kalis and she is not up to 7 yet but you would be amazed at what you will see and maybe even change your mind about what children can do

Whats bull shit about that. I remember when i was to get my first cooperate job as
A cashier then, my dad appealed to me not to go, that cashiers land demselves in huge debts
Due to either mistake or fetish people. Oga, i told him thats d risk of my profession so i must do it.
He wasnt rong cos i entered that gbese sha but protecting children from risk is not what makes them tough. Let them take risks n learn from their fall. Tho accidents can be extreme
Let him start by driving them to church every sunday.

The world is rapidly evolving and so are the inhabitants thereof.. it is no mere gainsaying that kids of nowadays develop and grow rapidly into adults and most times we wonder how time flies..
However, unlike their foreign counterparts, most nigerian parents are reluctant to teach and orientate their kids on driving lessons.
Driving is a skill which if acquired, is improved upon over time before the driver can become an expert at it..
So dear nigerian parents who can afford a car, highlighted below are reasons why you should teach your kids to drive before they reach full puberty.

1. freedom of expression: nigerian parents' head swell when their young ones make them proud but only little of them gives room to aid their kid's expression and courage.
imagine a 22 year old asking NLders how to toast a fine girl in his street wtf!!!
please, driving lessons can boost your child's morale and physical skills because kids are naturally born to be eager to learn new things..

2. emergency cases: i once heard a story of a woman who wanted to give birth.. her cell phone was down, her husband was away from the country, it was just she, 4 cars in her garage and a 12 year old who couldn't drive.. unfortunately, she died..
i heard another story too of a man who, while driving to his hometown with his 9 year old kid got an heart attack, it was that boy who bravely drove his dad to the hospital and saved his life ( it is no mere fiction, i saw it on a national daily)..
now, what does the two stories above preach to you??

3. sweet sixteen: in UK, when you are about to clock sixteen, excitements fill your heart because you are either gon get your own car or you are gon have full access to your parents'..
reverse is the case here and it is quite unfortunate.. even if you can't afford to buy your kids one on their birthday or you do not have one of your own, take them for driving lessons and obtain driver's license for them 'with faith'.. trust me, it is the best present for a sixteen year old..

4. sheer embarrasment: in this age, it is now more embarrasment for a teenager who can't drive than for a fully grown woman who can't cook ordinary soup..
yes..it is true
she can cover up her mess by buying food outside or employing others to, but you can't hide the fact that you can't drive..
infact, it makes you lazy and awkward..

5. job opportunities: evidently speaking, some firms require those with driving lessons.. driving is a whole skill on its own..

My dad's boss wanted to send me a message when i was 15 year old..he asked, could you drive?? i answered no.. he was just shaking his head in pity for me.. then, he asked his 13 year old girl to drive me to get the assignment done..
i had regrets from that trip, i am sure i'd have been paid a lot of money if i had acquired driving skills earlier..

Nairalanders, abeg come and share your driving meme and awkward experiences..

What age did you learn to drive??

Ever been embarrased by your lack of driving abilities?? please share

Minimize your risk. Many kids will steal their parents cars at about the age of 15 to 18. You as a parent would rest easily knowing the your child behind the wheel of your car at least knows how to safely operate a vehicle.

Isn't it funny that the OP did not for once advise readers to make sure and check if it is legal before teaching or learning how to drive at age 15. Lol....

A 16 year old boy can drive. However my issue with teenage drivers is the entitlement mentality they create for themselves. I don't know if I'm okay, but I do not enjoy driving my dad's car.

I hate to pose with properties I cannot or barely afford. It erodes my thinking faculty and makes me feel stu.pid.
