Nigerian Army To Increase Personnel Strength To 200,000 by Nobody: 3:50pm On Feb 12, 2016
Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt General Tukur
Buratai, has disclosed that the army will embark on an
ambitious expansion programme to address the
manpower needs of the force to respond appropriately
to contemporary threats to national security.
To this effect, Buratai said the army planned to
increase its personnel strength from its present
100,000 to slightly above 200,000 in the next eight
years.
The COAS, while delivering a lecture titled: ‘Nigerian
Army: Challenges and Future Perspectives,’ at the
National Defence College (NDC), Abuja, added that
12,000 personnel would be recruited in 2016 alone to
fill the vacancies created as a result of the new
establishments in the army.
He explained that the army’s expansion programme
was aimed at boosting its response capacity while
stressing that its capabilities to effectively deal with
its present challenges were however not in doubt.
According to him, the contemporary national security
needs and Nigeria’s territorial size require more than
what the army presently have in terms of personnel
strength.
Buratai noted that the citing of the Special Forces
Training Centre in Buni Yadi in Yobe State, which is
one of the theatres of the Boko Haram war, was an
indication of the army’s determination to end
insurgency.
In his lecture, Buratai identified Nigeria’s weak
industrial base, the effect of climate change on the
environment and Nigeria’s porous borders as some of
the factors fuelling armed conflict in Nigeria.
The army chief said the force would establish a new
division in Borno State.
He said the establishment of the 8 Division, Nigerian
Army, located in the northern part of Borno State,
was part of strategic plan by the army to boost
military operations against terrorists particularly in
areas around the Lake Chad Basin.
The Nigerian army under the then COAS, Lt-Gen.
Azubuike Ihejirika (rtd), in August 2013, established
the 7 Infantry Division in Maiduguri to boost the
military’s counter-insurgency operation in the North-
east.
Even though detail of the new establishment was not
disclosed, Buratai said the new division would soon
become fully operational with logistics and manpower
deployments.
The army chief also disclosed that plans were
underway to establish another division to be known as
the 6 Division, Nigerian Army, with Headquarters in yet
to be identified location in the South-south region of
the country.

Foolishness of the highest order.

In a time most of the developed nations are scaling down on the numerical strength of their military in preference of a lean mean killing machine, this dunce thinks modern warfare is down to the number of potential bullet catchers.

This move is geared towards absolviing more of his illiterate bokos into the army which he intends to send to their graves fighting jihad for Saudi Arabia.

APCLyingBastard:
As at 1975, Nigeria's defense budget stood at 45% of the total budget with an army total size at 250,000. Compared ten years earlier in 1966 prior to the civil war, the Nigerian army had a standing force of just 10,000 and the military defense was far lower than what was allocated to institutions like the police.

The likes of T.Y. Danjuma remarked on the danger of having such a large armed forces during peacetime and called on the Murtala and recently ousted Gowon govt to begin a process of demobilization. The Nigerian army according to Danjuma was the biggest welfare scheme in Africa where soldeirs were dying of old age.

Today, the Buhari govt is intending on expanding the Nigerian military to 150,000 over the course of 5yrs.

Why exactly do we need to house and feed 150,000 men whose only main task is to kill the very same civilian citizens who through tax payments fund their Yeye no handwork career?

If Buhari thinks the only solution to Nigeria's ever complex and increasing political solution is to use military brute force to subdue dissent then he obviously is really daft.

A large standing army in peacetime comes with a lot of challenges both financial and also political. The cost of maintaining a large army and the risk of having the army become more policitized increases with a large standing army.

Rather than recruit more soldeirs to fight the ever increasing boko jihadists why not look at what is driving recruitment of northern Muslim youth to join boko haram?

Buhari should begin to use the small sense he still has in that his gerriatic brain. Instead of hiring more soldeirs why not hire more teachers to provide education to the almajiri youth? Instead of buying more tanks to kill your citizens why not build more schools ?

China, US and Russia are scaling down on the numerical strength of their military and are turning their military over to high end technology.

An SU-27 air to ground fighter jet will make mince meat of a whole division.

A 21yr old USAF drone pilot will take out any large gathering of infantry with a single push of a button in any part of the world from a comfy base in Nevada after which he will watch it on CNN with his buddies over a beer.

They are not strengthening the army but absolviing their boko lunatics into it which they intend to unleash on civilians .

This is foolishness of the highest order.

Foolishness.

A large army stands the risk of becoming indiscipline and prone to mutiny and factions.

In the wake of dwindling resources how can the state fund or maintain such a large force of men whose only primary skill is to be proficient in the use of firearms?

Back in 1975 this was a real problem as military men were grossly underpaid which saw to some of the war veterans resorting to armed robbery to augment their low salaries.
.

The first signs of a collapsed state is usually a large underfunded and indiscipline army.

This policy of militarization will not work to solve our political problems. Only sincere dialogue and pragmatic political solutions will.

Is the army waging war on its citizens?

The US population is 350 million but they are scaling down on their army

China has come out to state that it will reduce its military force of 3 million to a million. This is China with over 1.5bn people

What logic other than to kill and intimidate your own citizenry warrants this foolishness?

With Nigeria heading for serious recession and bankruptcy how does the dullard hope to maintain such large force of men during peacetime?

The army is not designed for civilian policing but for existential and external threats.

Review our constitution and corporate unity since all conflicts in Nigeria stem from that weak document.

Nigeria's civil unrest are first and foremost politically induced and as such only sincere dialogue and not brute force can solve it.

They want full sharia in the north, I say let them have it.

The Niger Delta wants full resource control, then why not? After all its their oil

The Biafrans want a return to true republic. You hate them and are quick to attack then in your north. Grant them their autonomy and see if they will venture into your sharia enclave

We need human security..jobs better economy and above all HOPE in the country's future.... Goons in uniform can't give us that....and if push comes to shove goons in uniform can bleed....its better PMB doesn't let that happen.

I agree with your point on a leaner and meaner military, but disagree on your dialogue proposals. Also try and make your points without so much anger and hatred.

Due to the nature of the treats Nigeria faces, we need no more than 80,000 military personnel, 100,000 at most. what we need is modern hardware and training. Boko Haram fighters are no more than 5,000 ill trained but adequately equipped fighters. Believe me, a force of no more than 10,000 men (due to the large area of operation) with adequate weapons and air cover will wipe out boko Haram in a matter of 3 months. Ordinary hunters with dane guns were able to drive boko Haram out of some villages.

Ditto for nigerdelta militants, a well equipped navy with adequate equipment would make minced meat of the militants. but the Nigeria navy rely on outdated gun boats donated by US to fight militants in the creeks.

Now, about allowing Sharia. Allowing full Sharia as a state policy in any part of Nigeria is a recipe for disaster. When ever religion becomes a state policy, it leads to conflicts between religion and state. Most modern states are separating religion from state to ensure peace and stability.

Resource control in the form of returning land ownership to original owners of resource rich land is the ideal and allowing the owners make decisions on how the their land is exploited. Agreed taxes to both the federal and state governments should then be negotiated and agreed on. Even this resource control can lead to disastrous consequences. The families, communities and tribes might war among themselves to gain control of resource rich lands.
As an example, i have a large piece (over the150 hectares) of land that was under government acquisition and was in the process of being released to the original owners. Initially, it was only 3 families that was involved and had been processing the release for the past 10 year, anytime the final papers are to be signed another family would petition the FG claiming ownership of the said land. As of today 6 families are almost at war over the ownership of the land, and the land had not even been approved. Now imagine what would happen if there was oil on the land.
Another contentious issue over resource control would be off-shore oil. How would of-shore resources be distributed? please not that our economic exclusive zone is proportional to the landmass, so without northern landmass, our exclusive economic zone would reduce. Cameroon would encroach on most oil fields belonging to Akwa Ibom and cross rivers state.

Ok that's fine but not really necessary. What the army needs now is a major upgrade in its weaponry and firing systems. You can have a million man army but without the right type of arsenal they'll amount to nothing more than vigilantes. Today's wars require precision not a legion.
