Father A walked into the hospital with his 9 year old son looking worried and stressed out. His son however looked toxic wincing intermittently in pain, helpless. I could clearly see the reason for his pain. His right hand was massively swollen, dark in colour with terribly damaged skin.

Looking at his dad for an explanation, he went on to tell me that his boy had broken his hand 5 days ago while playing with his peers. He had taken him to a traditional Bone Setter who "treated" him. He was in the hospital because his son had gotten worse.

I looked at his son and prayed his hand would be salvaged. It would be so unfair having a little boy's hand amputated because of the father's ignorance. I gave the boy some pain medications, started him on antibiotics, took down notes and counselled the father. I called the Orthopaedic surgeons and offered yet again another prayer.

Traditional bone setters are good at their job. I knocked an Okada guy down about 5 months ago. His legs were broken, the guy is back to Okada business now. His was done at Cotonou. I prefer them to hospital. It is well

Traditional Bone Setters might seem to get good results when dealing with simple fractures. In complicated fractures, the results are fraught with complications like the story I had encountered first hand.

And how can we tell if a fracture is complicated or not, an x ray of the affected area gives it away.

These traditional bone setters are probably not good for kids. I had an arm dislocation some years back and my mum took me to "an ijaw old man". After the massage sessions, I was okay.

These bone setters dey wicked oo. Their mind dey for back upon my tears. They're good at what they do sha

My dear, a family friend sustained a fracture of the arm and went to a traditional Bone Setter who charged him N110,000, believe it or not, and carried on to treat what he later learnt was a complicated fracture. His arm bones had shattered into several pieces and no one was the wiser. He later went on to see an orthopedic surgeon, thank God. A major surgery was done, some rods inserted in his arm and he is doing fine now.

I know cases of of many people that hospitals will say that they will amputate their leg or hand and once they take it to traditional bone setters the bone will be OK.... a family friend of mine broke his leg thru okada accident and if u should see him today, u won't know that such thing happened to him.....I guess the one the father took his son to is a fake one....lots of people patronize them cos they do what most Nigerian doctors can't do

So painful. However, i'm not quick to dismiss the traditional bone setters. They have helped millions of people who could not afford expensive services in hospitals.

Ignorance is the bedrock of many ill happenings in Nigeria. Until the Federal Government consider sensitisation a priority, things like that and many others will keep happening.

I pray healing and quick recovery on him. He shall never be amputed

So why do people go to bone setters....

There was one patient I knew of who had a simple fracture of her left tibia and fibula after a road accident. If she had gone to hospital....she would have had it sorted out in no time. But she went to a bone setter...who messed up her leg...and she eventually ended up spending months in the hospital while the doctors and nurses tried to put her leg back together again.

If she had gone to hospital immediately...she would have been out in a month. Maybe even less.

Or the diabetic gent who broke his leg...and went to bone setter. Two weeks later...with a gangrenous leg, semi conscious, and a high blood sugar above 500mg/dl ....his relations turned up with him at the small clinic that I was working in at the time and asked for treatment. We had to refer them to the nearest teaching hospital.(I honestly don't know if they went there).

The thing is....Nigerians go to hospital with broken bones. Hospital offers to fix it for them with N100000. They say no, too expensive...and then go to bone setter who would do it for N40000. By the time the limb is gangrenous due to the ''ministrations''...it is back to the hospital where they will end up spending N500000.If not more.

Sometimes it is better to go to hospital and pay the heavy duty fees. Because the alternative is far worse especially in terms of costs.

On a sunny Sunday in April that year, I was playing International superstar soccer Deluxe on Sega with my great friend named Dean.
My lil bro wanted sunset riders, but the rivalry between me and Dean was too much to entertain any break in our soccer, and he was even leading 3-2 angry (our last game ever! angry )
He walked out annoyed and decided to scale High jumps.
I don't know why, but he decided to climb the wall of an uncompleted building to get sticks for the 'High-jumps'.

The next thing we heard was a crashing sound and screams of Jesus, Jesus, Jesus!!! grin
We scurried to the scene to find his leg severely damaged by broken blocks.
Never seen such a traumatizing injury as that

Dean rushed to call my mum and aunt in our house on his bicycle.
Immediately my mum arrived, they went straight to the Baba Bone setter man, and work commenced on it.

Doctors were shocked by the gruesomeness of the injury and the bleeding that surfaced after some days.
They were really pessimistic about the chances of complete restoration of the leg, so they had to stick to the traditional man.

5 months later, he started walking again!!!

Bottom line is as far as Nigeria is concerned, the Local Bone setters are better than our hasty and unequipped doctors who would hang the POP wrapped leg for months and suggest amputation for complicated cases before you say 'Bone' cheesy
Only a few hospitals are good enough in such cases in Nigeria.

The western world is a different level entirely, because football players suffer multiple fractures, but still get back to 100 percent in a few months.

If you are consulting a Local bone doctor, be sure you aren't patronizing a charlatan, else you are finished!
