But I am not sure it's applicable in this instance.Oba lived and reigned to a ripe age, that's our prayers for all our elders and good kings.
Sadly,he would be remembered as the Oba who tried to re-vise history and in the process made his Yoruba brothers release pictures ,oral and documentary evidences we may never had seen or read about due to mutual respect and long held tradition of secrecy .
Where are the pictures and documentary evidences they released please?

I heard it has stopped in Benin. Not sure, though, but I hope so. However, they still do it in Yoruba land, even for small kobo kobo bales.

if you are from the Benin kingdom or have deep info about the coronation of Benin kings, I will like to ask a question.

How is the next king selected? is the kingship rotated amongst different ruling house or only the sons of the previous king can be king?

thanks
The first son is the heir. It is from father to son no contest. Other sons and royal family members may be given dukedoms but the throne goes to the son. I

Thank you sir.
Firstly, those pictures and documents existed but were never released by custodians until the revered late Oba of Benin raised the dust.I am sure that people believe and know these enough historical evidences existed but they were deliberately withheld from the public out of respect for the Oba of Benin stool. Please kindly do a simple search to find these pictures sir.To assist you, search for
1.The picture of the Oba of Benin receiving the Queen of England(to debunk the falsehood that the Oba of Benin never leaves his palace or do obeisance to any other person as promoted by the late Oba of Benin who attempted to re-write history)
2.The picture of the sacred place head of departed Obas of Benin are buried in Ile Ife.
3.The picture of the 5 First Class kings(to prove that the Oba of Benin acquices to the superiority of the Ooni)
4.Documents showing historical rating of the kings and their pay based on their order and deep knowledge of the history of the whole of old Western Nigeria.
5.The reason for the Oba's appellation as "a descendant of a king "
6.The near absence of superior evidence to counter those already in public domain as provided by those opposing the re-writing of the history.
7.And reasonable inferences like:the meaning of the word "Oba" has its root in Yoruba language not Bini word.
8.The first Oba of Benin,Eweka, is the son of Oranmiyan, an Ile Ife prince, so it may most likely be the reason why the Oba's appellation of "Descendant of a King ".Which agrees with those opposing the revision of history.

However,we are all open to new information from both camps in order to broaden our knowledge so nobody will rise up in the future and attempt to distort history.
But for now, the Yoruba camp and recent admission of superiority of the Ooni (as our father) by the Olu of Warri, who in history is regarded as a direct descendant of the Bini monarchy, which derived from the Yoruba, supports the Yoruba historical position.Whereas,no single evidence shows any Ooni alive or dead showing obeisance to any other authority. This probably explains why the expose may continue until the Benin royalty is courageous enough to correct the error caused by the legacy of the departed Oba. I sense that the Yoruba royal establishment who definitely are slighted by the late Oba of Benin, will continue to release more and more.
That's why I want to know the reason the late Oba,and not any of his ancestors, attempted what he did.
I pray for good wisdom for the Crown Prince to clean up the damage caused by his late father and end this cold resentment given to the Benin stool by the Yoruba royal elite.
Have you noticed that the Benin Crown Prince has not been given attention by the Yoruba royalty even though the Yoruba are aware of what their diplomatic and historical roles should be?

I agree with that. I will google those things you reference later, although I already know about all of them, even if I don't necessarily draw the same inferences from them as you do.

But let me ask, did you read this somewhat interesting take on the matter by Odia Ofeimun? I find he addresses the Oranmiyan issue squarely.

Yes I did, Thank you sir. With all due respect to elderstatesman,Odia Ofeimum, who was the Private secretary to Chief Awolowo,he didn't say anything different from what the late Oba peddled in his book. For example,he said it was because the Oba of Benin was using the title of Oba, was the reason other Yoruba kings use the title Oba but he forgot to inform his listeners that the word Oba itself is a Yoruba word. And even by literal interpretation,it means the Lord governing all affairs but Ooni means "The Owner ".From time immemorial, only Ooni alone bears that title and simply because only one "Owner " title had existed even till date but you can have several Obas(Royal majesty Lords) even without distorting their ranking. For example, how would the Oba of Benin be Number one, yet his appellation is "Descendant of a king " even up till today (it was apparently to preserve that Oranmiyan angle, who incidentally is a Great Yoruba King) and bear same title with other Yoruba kings and the heads of his predecessors are buried in the domain of the Ooni who in the Yoruba history,is regarded as his 'Owner'and the "Owner of everything"?If Ooni is a Benin prince, how come his title meaning is more superior and no living or dead king takes his title name and he's the one who receives the head of departed Obas of Benin and not vice versa?Simple,in Africa, people are buried in their father's enclaves. So the neo-history by the late Oba offends African traditions, inconsistent and almost stands logic on its head.
My fear is that if this silent war doesn't end quickly, the Benin stool royalty will be exposed more and more as lying about its history and famed pride of place in history.Apparently, the Yoruba tried to resist doing this but for the late Oba's recalcitrance.
While I may agree that the edo people may be culturally independent but its Royalty is more likely of Yoruba origin.
Just like the Itsekiri whose Monarchy is Bini and accepts it for historical fact with the understanding that they by extension, are under the Ooni.
It's so sad but it's going to get messier as time goes on unless the Crown Prince does diplomatic resolution of the impasse. But will pride allow him?As good students of history,we are watching.

we know na. i saw the new Oba walking round the market last month with heavy security. i guess that was one of the initiation rites

Benin tradition is still the strongest in Nigeria. everything was done accordingly since when rumor was flying that the man was dead. with this announcement you will think he just died.

may his soul rest in peace

You mean you saw the Edaikhen or the crown prince. He hasnt been crowned oba yet.

Try and learn. This is coronation as Edaikehen N'uselu not Oba. In benin tradition, the crown prince must first be initiated into the royal family as Uko N'Iwebo after a 7 day rites(this happened last year october), after that he has to wait for the oba to order he be crowned Edaikhen N'uselu i.e ruler of uselu(a domain of benin), that is the highest rank before he would be crowned oba after the burial of his father. What you witnessed like everybody else that day was coronation of the crown prince as Edaikhen n'uselu. The procession started from the oba palace to emotan shrine and other shrines down to edaikhen palace at uselu.

Coronation of Oba of Benin is such a big deal, what you witnessed is child's play compared to it. The obaship rites last a very long time and starts outside the city in far away Benin villages.
