Story for the gods. Oba of Benin Erediauwa was the only traditional ruler in nigeria history to be summoned to court to give evidence on electoral dispute.

In 1991, the Governorship election tribunal summoned him to defend himself against allegation of election rigging in favour of Oyegun against Igbinedion. He trekked from his palace to the tribunal. Nothing negative happened to Justice Lateef Dosunmu that summoned him till today.

This is not Yoruba land, the Oba of Benin is not appointed by the government, there have been Obas since before the constitution was drafted. This statement implies that is the governor does not like an Oba or crown prince he can remove him and that is as false as can be. I dare Oshiomole or even Buhari to try an oust the Oba of Benin, they may succeed in removing him but they will not live to enjoy it.

The last real oba of benin was ovoramen who was forced into exile by the
british, all the oba after that were appointed by the british or the Nigerian
government, so it is time Edo youth wake up to reality and accept that
the oba throne is subjected to the government's regulation.
There is a wide difference between emotion and reality.

The british invaded Benin in 1897, deposed the oba and exiled him to Calabar. The oba's son, Prince Aiguobasinwin Ovonramwen moved to his aunt's house and began farming in order to earn a living. This he did until the british consul eventually called him back to Benin.

In the meantime, the british consul ruled Benin in conjunction with Chief Agho Ogbedeoyo (the Obaseki of Benin).

Oba Ovonramwen died in 1914 and a succession crisis between Chief Agho Ogbedeoyo and Prince Aiguobasinwin Ovonramwen ensued. It seemed that Chief Ogbedeoyo would be crowned as the new oba, but strong evidence by some Benin chiefs eventually made the british consul rule in favour of Prince Aiguibasinwin. The british consul thus approved the appointment of Prince Aiguobasinwin Ovonramwen as the new Oba of Benin (Oba Eweka II) and that was how the practice of the consul (or governor) approving the appointment of the Oba began.

You obviously do not understand what the constitution says. The constitution does not give the govt the authority to appoint a traditional ruler my friend. It says recognise. Can't you get it. Even in climes where the king is selected by the king makers the govt cannot meddle constitutionally. Stop twisting facts.

In the case of the binis it's even worse. No room to interfare. The king is born and not made.
You can ask the family members and friends of the late onyeregbulem (former milad Edo state) how it went when he challenged the Oba's authority/ supremacy.
The point here is the gov can do whatever he likes under the constitution but it has no effect whatsoever on the sacredness of that throne. The binis can take Carr of their Oba if your augument, like others here, is based on salaries and allowances.

That was slightly different in that Ovonramwen was overthrown by an act of war, and there were many casualties on both sides. After he was removed Benin then became part of the British empire so they chose the king. Since then it has returned to normal. And the first son of the Oba ascends after his fathers death.
