It is not my money. I am also not applying but I applaud the initiative because I know thousands of people who need it desperately. Some of them even have families and they subsist on less than 10k. They'd go for this and await better things. One can leave the programme anytime employment comes as it is a voluntary programme.

What skills could u garner from teaching that would be useful to the grauduates on completion of the 2 year program. Or are we merely extending the wasted years of NYSC. I thought we would be creating models for diversification, self employment and job creation. Yet some of u half baked graduates who can't reason thinks a two year teacher voluntary teacher program would help you become a good engineer, doctor, business manager when you finish it or maybe the 23k would make you rich ? Or the laptop to be given would make u an employer.

OK, bit pretty untimely, up till now. masses ain't finding the economy funny at all. In as much as i appreciate the initiatives, the Government needs to step up the pay say roughly 30k, Besides, you did not mention whether the 23k does not include other logistics such as accommodation, feeding, transport e.t.c. the prices of all this things has gone up recently.

My suggestions would have been to train 500,000 persons on SMEs in terms of manufacturing and producing certain goods with an unbiased selection process. This SME initiative made China what is today.

The Govt is always looking for means to cut cost. I don't know what they are using all our money to do.

The first to comment on this page is a practical example of the type of youths we have today, no one reads to understand, they don't do research, they not ready to understand that there is always a process.
Let me shed more light into what the OP has contributed and the directives I think the government is trying to drive.
The truth is there are jobs in Nigeria, but the quality of our education process is a serious turn off. That is why those who study abroad in developed country have a better edge of being employed than a Nigerian graduate. If you familiar with most companies when they recruit, they send the new recruits for training programs, happens in almost all organization because they know you need the skill to execute the job properly. And this happens to be a burden on the company.
Virtually all we do in our education system is not effective in Nigeria's labour market. If you take a careful look at the job description even though you studied the course in school you will notice there are demands on the roles and responsibility that you didn't even come across or have an idea of making it practical. The truth is our education is outdated. In dubai toady, no one will ask for CV, they ask 'what can you do'?
This brings me back to the N'power program, it is just simply set to make the unemployed youths employable and become employers which the result will tell in the future. Only thing I would say is, it would have been aligned with the NYSC program to reduce costs.

You see, i think this is the problem...people who come here to criticize initiatives are not in anyway the targeted. At least you can afford to fly, many like you cant even pay 50 naira for okada and you say 23k is nothing? Many of us heared far less during NYSC and life wasnt bad. Given the current realities, i think its a good program. Its a temporary engagement and a skill acquisition program, many will fly high if they put in their best.
