stable power supply is possible if federal government allow capable states to generate their power. it has anothwr advantage coz it will generate income for the state |

989900:At a meagre 5,000mw, Nigerians enjoyed up to 18-20hrs power supply accros the entire country for months. I can assure you that 7,000 to 10,000 can translate to a steady 20-22hrs accross the nation. The only thing is, when power becomes fairly stable, it would drive industrialisation, and with a large drive in industrialisation, the power demand will increase monumentally and then even 10,000mw wouldn't be enough any more. But with the current state of things (non-industralised Nigeria), even 7000mw would do wonders. 1 Like |

Phonefanatic:We have a country with zero security, a country where security forces only know how to harrass, extort and kill the innocent. Pipeline infrastructure are as vulnerable as candle was close to a heat source. If we must be real, it takes only patriotism for those pipelines not to be blown, there's absolutely nothing the govt can do if a people decide to sabotage their own development. 1 Like |

It is not an impossibility. We can achieve even more by that time if the present momentum is sustained. The period between 1980 till 2000 were wasted years for Nigeria. Our leaders in those years failed to set the nation along the right path economically, the enormous resources at the nation's disposal by that time were frittered away while the other peer nations at that time like China, Malaysia, Singapore, Brazil, Pakistan etc took the bull by the horn and they are better for it today, some are even nuclear powers now while Nigeria is still lagging far behind. But I'm pleased with the way we are now trying to put things in order and I'm very positive that we will take a giant leap forward in terms of power generation when the present power projects fully come on stream. My only worry is the nefarious activities of the Niger Delta militants that who are hell-bent on neutralizing our little achievements in the power sector. Blowing up our power generation infrastructure and kidnapping the expatriates working to lift up the sector is counter-productive and should be condemned by all. 1 Like |

It is possible only when corruption is completely killed and buried. That will be in a couple of years maybe 50yrs from now if the future leaders continue this fight against corruption |

Actually, with our current economic status, ten years is too small to have steady power. I did a project on the implementation of nuclear power in Nigeria and I stumbled across these facts: Nigeria has 3 hydroelectric power stations and 7thermal stations all with an installed capacity of about 3,600mw and a power distribution grid that can only handle about 7,000mw. This 3,600mw is not even enough to supply Lagos state alone for 24/7 power. Nigeria need at least 100,000 - 120,000mw at the very least. The legislation in place has made it almost impossible for private companies to build power stations and to supply to the national grid. Thus meaning that only the FG can generate power for the grid. The national grid can only handle a paltry 7,000mw and thus needs to be severely upgraded or even overhauled to at least 150% of the expected power supply to be able to handle the power to be generated (and Nigeria needs over 100,000mw). Add to the fact that power stations cost money and that thermal stations which burn either gas or coal wreck havoc to the atmosphere (especially at this time when the threat of global warming is hanging over our heads). Even a 1,000mw nuclear reactor costs over 3 billion USD, we can't afford to generate 100,000mw in ten years. 20, 25, maybe but not ten. Maybe if the legislation restricting private ownership of power plants is changed, we can have sustainable power in 15 years, but knowing the Nigerian legislative process, only God knows if anything can be done about it. 1 Like |

obailala: You've got it all wrong. for starters over 40%of Nigerians do not have power at all. even 7,000mw is barely enough for Lagos ( the most populous state) to get 24/7 electricity in all its environs |

lilwill:For the majority who are connected to power supply, the little 5000mw ensured up to 18-20hrs. And to correct your statememt, its mostly very rural areas that aren't still connected to the grid and these users dont make up anywhere near 40%. Nigerians are mostly concentrated in cities and all cities are connected to the grid. Even if we were to connect every single unconnected home to the grid today, the potential power demand from these unconnected rural areas wouldnt be up to 5% of the total power demand nationwide. |

ITbomb: This what true federalism will bring if implemented. With separate grids jebba, shiroro, Kainji and ajaokuta steel complex will supply the north and middlebelt. Nipp that Tinubu started should have covered the SW by now generating transmitting and distributing power to all the SW states. They will have some gas supply from the SS. SS will use their gas which will be able to supply power to some parts of the SW and SE who also have coal. Corruption is a major setback and this cuts accross every region. 2 Likes |
Re: Is Steady Electricity Possible In Nigeria? by DrMuzungu(m): 10:49am On Jul 02, 2016 |
Technically speaking, Nigeria has to generate around 30 times more electricity at any given moment, to supply every Nigerian home or business 24/7. If that is achieved, then the answer to the question is YES. But we all know that is not going to happen any time soon. |
