I am in support of this particular FGM, because;

1.) It prevents unpleasant odours which result from foul secretions beneath the prepuce.

2.) It reduces the incidence of urinary tract infections

3.) It reduces the incidence of infections of the reproductive system.

see what WHO has to say about it in the book on Traditions that affect the health of women and children, published in 1979;

"With regard to the type of female circumcision which involves removal of the prepuce of the clitoris, which is similar to male circumcision, no harmful health effects have been noted."

Bros thanks for this comment. I'm a typical Yoruba girl and it's most likely that I'll circumcise my female children. Why coz I don't see any reason why I shouldn't.
God. .I'd met some crazy girls as an undergraduate. And they can't control their sexual desires . One very close to me showed me her clitoris(cli*to*ris). Jeez.. It was long Eh. Like a mini pe*nis. I just wished she was circumcised coz she was a very good lady but for her heightened sexual appetite.

This is a disgusting and abominable act. When your girls can't urinate properly then you know barbaric and unsavory this practice is. I have a lot of experience with FGM and it's despicable I can't even talk about it. All these idiots here advocating for it should be ashamed of themselves; you're essentially mutilating a girl's body angry/

In the western modern world BOTH practices are frowned upon. If you were in the medical field you would understand that FMG and male circumcision are not similar surgical procedures although on paper it sounds the same.

It's obvious that you are speaking from a place of emotion rather than through factually based evidence or real experience

Where are the standards made by the medial profession for FGM as you claim. Please post it .An act that has been criminalized by many countries does not have regulations. Most countries that engage in this act are not doing it in hospitals with the supervision of licensed health professionals. But rather in dodgy unsanitary enviornments that do more harm than good.

Let's agree to disagree. This conversation is not a discourse but rather an emotional outburst on your part.

If you care to do the research you will find that there is a huge outcry from thousands of women who have had this procedure done, condemning it from different cultures and countries all over the world. The united nations have gotten involved and it's reached the judicial system of many countries. They are not all wrong. These movements and outcries are not based on a double staNdard.

Educate yourself on this issue from an objective standpoint. Put culture aside and critically think about it. This issue has nothing to do with the west vs Nigeria. Its not them vs us.

Also ask yourself how many men had gathered together across the globe to spread awareness about the negative effects of male circumcision Not many.because it is not the equivalent procedure done to males and not for the same purpose.

hoodboy:

so their religious injunctions super-cedes ours? I'm sure the west will be cool with it if it was a jewish practice.... same way it is done at infancy for men is the same way it's done at infancy too for some girls... All I'm saying is that enough of the double standard, if you condemn female circumcision, condemn male circumcision as well. Rather than criminalise it, you could work towards setting and improving the standards to reduce associated risk, which funny enough exists in the two practices

My dear I'm being objective, if the west hasn't so criminalized female genital cutting, it would not be receiving the backlash that it is. If they have been "tolerant" of this culture they'd rather sensitize and advocate for safer ways of doing it, e.g using sterilized equipment, perfecting different safe cutting procedures, if half the money spent promoting male circumcision by the west is spent on promoting female circumcision or rather sef if half the money spent criminalizing the procedure is spent understanding it and sensitizing cultures that practice it, the world will be a safer place.

Ps. Are you a mother, did you circumcise your son? If yes why put him through that kind of pain that is utterly unnecessary. This is the same argument against fgm basically yet under that same breathe y'all are mutilating male children mostly in the name of religion and not because of any hygiene excuse

I only wrote to where I said,she should shut up and let people with first hand experience speak, I have no idea where the rest of the quote came from, and if you go through my other comments you will realize it's exactly the same thing the other lady was trying to argue with me, I was circumcised, and I still have orgasm sometimes which depends on how stressed I am and other factors, so all the rubbish oyibo people keep putting up is mere speculation, female circumcision has been in existence even before the oyibos dreamt of making voyage to Africa, 98 percent of women in my state are circumcised, the oyibos have lost all the moral ground to tell what is wrong or right, and as some one with first hand experience, I can confidently say they are wrong, the oyibos that don't circumcise their girls, how morally sane is their society?

knostbrown01:
WHAT IS FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION (FGM)?

FGM according to world health organization (WHO), it includes all procedurl or total removal of external female Instruments for cultural and or non-medical reasons

WHAT IS FGM CALLED IN OUR LOCAL LANGUAGES?

In Yoruba, it is called ‘DI dabe fun omo’binrin’. In Igbo, it is called Ibi Nwanyi Ugwu while in Hausa, its called Kaciyan mata.

WHO PERFORMS FGM ON WOMEN AND GIRLS?

FGM is carried out by traditional circumcisers, traditional birth attenddants (TBAs) and health workers such as Midwives and community health extension workers (CHEWs)

HOW EXACTLY IS FGM DONE?

The procedure is done using tools like knives or scissors made by local blacksmiths. Some use razors or other sharp objects. The girl is held down by the circumcisr,sometimes with assistance, and the act is done. Sedatives and disinfectants are not usually used. In some places, traditional medicine like herbs or fluid from snail is applied to aid healing of wound.

TYPE OF FGM BEING PERFORMED

TYPE I: called clitoridectomy involves the removal of prepuce, with or without cutting all or part of the clitor1s.

TYPE II: Is called excision. Here, the clitor1s is removed and there is total or partial removal of the inner lips (labia minora) of the vag1na.

TYPE III: This is most dangerous type of FGM and known as infibulation. It involves the removal of the part or all of the external Instruments and the vag1na opening is stitched after narrowing it allowing for small space where urine and menstruation can pass through. Later, surgeries are down on the woman before s*xua1 intercourse and child birth to open and close vag1na.

TYPE IV: Is unclassified type. It includes piercing, scrapping, pricking or making of incision on clitor1s and/or the vag1na lips.

ARE CIRCUMCISERS PAID?

YES, either in gift or cash, when it is cash, the procedure can cost about #500 above.

AT WHAT AGE IS FGM PERFORMED ON GIRL OR WOMAN?

It varies in different tribes and communities, in some places, girls are circumcised on the 8th day or before age 5 while others perform it before they reach adolescence.

EFFECT OF FGM ON GIRLS AND WOMEN

(1). Uncontrollable bleeding which can cause infections and lead to severe pain, or even death.

(2). Infection: such as tetanus infection, hepatitis B and even HIV/AIDS from usage of unsterilized blades or objects.

(3). Victims may also experience intense shock when the act is being performed causing immediate and long-term psychological effect.

(4). Urine retention: women who are victims of type III FGM may experience difficulty in urinating leading to urine retention and causing urinary tract infections.

(5). menstrual pain: victims of type III FGM may experience difficulty whenever they are menstruating.

(6). Difficulty during childbirth, obstructed labour, artificially tightened vag1na can leads to caesarean section.

(7). Infertility and some women have developed keloids because of FGM

(8. Lack of s*xua1 pleasure: the damage to female Instruments can make s*x painful and unappealing to women

NIGERIAN STATE THAT FGM IS MOSTLY PERFORM

• FGM is more prevalent in the southern zones than in the northern zones. States with the highest prevalence Osun (77%), Ebonyi (74%) , Ekiti (72%), Imo (68%) and Oyo (66%)

• FGM is most prevalent among Yoruba women (55%), followed by Igbo women (45%).

Infibulation (TYPE III) is more prevalent in Nasarawa (22%), Kaduna (21%), and Bayelsa (20%) than in any other states

WHY MUST FGM END?

Since FGM has no verifiable health benefit, ending it will help stop a form of gender based violence against future generation of girls and women. The practice violates the rights of women and girls to: Physical and mental integrity, freedom from violence, freedom from discrimination on basis of s*x, freedom from torture, cruel, inhuman and degrading treatments and right to life.

ARE THERE LAWS AGAINST FGM IN NIGERIA?

YES; the federal legislation that exists is VAPP ACT (Violence Against Persons Prohibition) which was signed into law in May 2015. Amongst other forms of violence against women, VAPP Act recommends 5 years imprisonment term and/or #100,000 fines for anyone who carries out the procedure or anyone who engages someone to carry it out.

@the boldened, we can't completely blame it on lack of circumcision. Her case is just an abnormal overgrowth. And it doesn't apply to all uncircumcised women.

For the issue of her excessive sexual appetite, we still can't blame it on lack of circumcision. I will take her to be a nymphomaniac. She has a high level of androgen in her system, which is not common among women.

And Biologically speaking, women have a relatively low level of androgen when compared with that of men, thus low libido/sexual urge and it varies with their menstrual cycle.

If a woman must be circumcised at all, it must be done with moderation. If it is grossly done, then she is going to have complications. And her husband will never enjoy her.

That is the reason why a lot of marriages are not working well or broken today.

if you know alot about the famales reproductive organ and circumcision you wouldn't be asking that question,that the top layer was removed doesn't mean it still doesn't link to the vag!na which extends into the body,infact, it healed up and formed a bulged like a swelling, so even when touched there, I still feel sensations. You seem not get the point medical professionals are trying to make.
If a woman's vag.inal has been mutilated, it leaves a scar and affects it's elasticity hence obstructed Labour. And other problems listed by the op.

Let me make something clear hear, circumcision can not stop a woman that want to be wayward not to be wayward. Or do you want to tell me that all the prostitutes we have today in Nigeria were not circumcised? Ofcourse majority of them are circumcised

The androgen hormone plays a huge role is in determining how high your sexual appetite will be.

Those reasons you stated up there are anomalies which are not peculiar to white people alone, rather humans as a whole.

Do you want to tell me we don't have sexually perverted black people? What about gays? We even have them in Nigeria, inshort they are everywhere. Recently a popular black South African gay singer died of anal cancer.

I am in support of this particular FGM, because;

1.) It prevents unpleasant odours which result from foul secretions beneath the prepuce.

2.) It reduces the incidence of urinary tract infections

3.) It reduces the incidence of infections of the reproductive system.

see what WHO has to say about it in the book on Traditions that affect the health of women and children, published in 1979;

"With regard to the type of female circumcision which involves removal of the prepuce of the clitoris, which is similar to male circumcision, no harmful health effects have been noted."
