I'd like to bring to our attention the new law on vehicle parking in Lagos State which was recently implemented (I believe) by the Lagos State Government and enforced by Lastma. Vehicles parked by the side or on the curbs of some major roads now have their vehicle number plates removed. The owner of the vehicle is then arraigned before a mobile court in absentia and fined.

During the visit of the Chief Security Officer of my establishment to the mobile court last week, he witnessed many motorists who were sentenced to 2 weeks of community service at the Gbagada General Hospital or a payment of a fine of N15,000.00 or both. Both processes of appearance in court and payment of the fine at Skye Bank, Alausa branch are tedious.

Please let's avoid the embarrassments this could cause and stay on the right side of the law.

Credit: Sis Agba.

THIS IS A NARRATION FROM A VICTIM

I had a very terrible experience yesterday morning on my way to work and I want people to learn from it. At about 10 am, I parked in front of a bank to use the ATM, I had barely come down from the car when I saw somebody videoing the cars parked in front of the bank. By the time I opened my car, I saw a fleet of Lagos state branded vehicles and so many people came down and started removing the plate number of cars including mine.

I came down from the car and forcefully tried stopping them from removing my plate number, explaining to them that I just came to use the ATM, then one of the police officers said to me "madam it's beyond us o, the Chief Judge is in that bus". I then went to the chauffeur driven beautiful bus in the fleet where I was told by the police escort to go and talk to the team on the road. The vehicles' plate numbers were removed, including mine and they put a paper in front of my car to come to Alausa.

Before going to Alausa, I went in to see them in the bank and I asked them, is this how you allow your customers to be maltreated ? They responded and I quote "they don't even know how to go about this Lagos revenue drive". On getting to Alausa, we were asked to wait, that the Chief Judge to sit at the mobile court is still on the road and they had an overflown office filled with people .

To cut my long story short, they already opened a case file for each of their so called offenders and they advised me to plead guilty before the magistrate otherwise the case will be adjourned till further notice "can you imagine that"? Eventually, I was charged guilty with a fine of N15k or an option of one week community work and some had N20k or N25k fine as the case maybe with an option of one month imprisonment etc.

A lady said she was inside Tantalizer in Ogba when her plate number was removed and both the prosecutor and the defender's lawyers were provided by the State Government. Can you beat that? All they were saying was "Lagos state needs to generate more revenue". My questions are: Must our dear State generate its revenue at the expense of its citizens? Where are we then supposed to park when visiting banks, eateries and shops? As we are meant to believe that most of the available spaces in front of the banks and other buildings are Government setbacks. These questions and more need answers.

Forewarned is forearmed as they were also spotted on Ajose Adeogun in Victoria Island this week. Nigeria is really waking up fast.

Most Nigerians like illegal things, banks in Uniport have ample parking space, even if it was full, opposite the Banks being the sports courts has a lot of parking space.

With all the space above you see Nigerians parking on the road and inhibiting traffic with the excuse of I will not stay long.

We need sanity in this country, Eko ni baje

Animal Kingdom.
They do not provide parking spaces.
They will never concentrate on rehabilitating inner state roads.
There is little or no pipe borne water.
No street lights except on federal highways in lagos.

What does the common man benefit sef?

Good move!

That will at least curb illegal parking

Reduce over-head cost of towing vehicles to LASTMA garage

Reduce traffic on our ever busy roads and also,

Increase the productivity of LASTMA as less official will available to monitor a road sice they will only be needed to remove plate numbers.

The Lagos State Government need to procure electronic screw-drivers for them so it will be easier and faster for them to remove number plates.

This one na serious revenue drive. My driver was driving and the traffic lights were not working. The RRS suddenly drove in front of us on their motorcycle and stopped us. I asked for our crime and they said we beat the traffic light. He wanted to enter my car to negotiate and i refused immediately. I started speaking all the grammar i know. I said they should follow us back to the traffic light and take pictures and videos of the traffic light, if it was working. Also, they need to show proof of my crime. They should rather charge me to mobile court and then i get my lawyer (will never plead guilty to a crime i did not commit). I would rather pay an unfair fine to the court than pay them 1kobo bribe.

At the end they knew it was bad market because it was already getting late and i was stopping them from making more money. They finally let us go. Thieves and crooks. I feel no pity for LASTMA and traffic RRS. If it was armed robbery, they would be the first to run and hide.

Let them try it with the wrong crowd...someone parks somewhere right and legal and you pull off his license plate and charge him to Magistrate court and then you find out that he's a SAN. Or some Government official or someone else with pull. Either it will end the scheme or they will beg and return his plates. So just pray they go after someone with clout who gets angry enough to challenge it in a court of law. As long as you are parked somewhere properly and rightfully, they should not be able to do this to you and you should fight them.

This is supposed to be on the front page. Honestly Lagos state Govt is exploiting Lagosians in many ways.
I remember January when we drove past a road in Alausa, all of a sudden we saw RRS police men with all kinds of vehicle and towing Van behind us. We got to traffic and stop and as we were waiting for the traffic to signal green, one of their vehicle came closer to us and asked us why we bypassed that traffic. As we were asking the man which traffic, they came down and invaded our vehicle and ordered us to drive straight to task force office in Alausa. When we got there they refused to talk to us, seized our vehicle (Toyota Venza) and detained our driver. He was later release at very late hour but the vehicle was still seized. We were asked to come the next day for the vehicle. When the drive went to get the vehicle, he later called me that he has been charged to court. I thought it was a joke. I rushed to the task force when I got there, he was already bundle into black Maria and headed to court. Hmm.. I was like. What kind of problem is this. When I got to court, I saw people with different cases.. Some Street hawkers, some Dando drivers, some Street boys. But i discovered that non has a serious case, it was all about "generating revenue".
To cut the story short, our lawyer advised the driver to plead guilty even when we knew he was not guilty. He was fine 30k or serve 3months jail term. We went back to the task force paid the fee before we could finish it was 4pm and that day was on Friday.
The young man was remanded in in prison till the next Monday. He was release when we presented the papers showing the payment and all that. The vehicle was equally realeased but all our phone and most valuable items stolen.
I was in a bus to the immigration office opp shoprite & the bus driver refused to open his door until her parked well in the b/s

His response to the angry passenger was na u go pay my fine?

Also why plead guilty if u didn't err? Stop kidding yourself the driver might not have been aware of the traffic law he flouted my bro too has been accosted for parking (on the part of the road for peeps turning right) while he waited. For green light.(THO I DONT KNOW YOUR CASE)

Even that woman (am very sure) is being economical with the truth about where she parked did she park in skye bank premises or on the road? (yes there might be some false charges) but i've experienced MANY where the rrs & monitoring unit were correct.

A year/2 from now other states will start implementing theirs. Street hawking is illegal as far DANFO drivers? C'mon we all know flouting traffic laws is their hobby.

Moving violation is one of the biggest source of revenue for cities all over the world. From parking tickets to speeding tickets, some cities are able to squeeze money out of distraught citizens. In some cases, there are motorcycle cops hiding in obscure locations waiting for offenders.

Like they say, driving is a privilege and not a right.

Lols true sha, but with time it will spread.

Most Nigerians are anti-development yet want naija to be like u.k

You will see people park on a 2-lane road so they can use. Atm, pick up people, purchase things from a shop...things ain't done that way.

Some will be using BRT lane when they're caught they start begging

Now these people who have been caught are forming innocent.

I believe I saw them doing this outside the intersection of Zenith and some other bank in Festac last week. Those banks don't have ample parking provided so what are customers to do? If the government and private entity provide parking, then yes, let it be on your head for not parking in the right place. But to penalise people when you've not done your job...no way, Jose.

This has been going on in some part of ogun state for over 5 years. Only difference is that local council thugs are the enforcers and also the judges.

This is what is obtainable in major cities all over the world except everything is done gangster style in nigeria. I am sure "no parking, no waiting, painting of kerbs e.t.c" were not installed on roads where arrests are being made.

Even if you are the chief justice of the state, you would be fined aslong as you find yourself in the wrong side of the law. If there was prior warning like traffic signs, then the fine would stay. i dont believe anyone is above the law sanctioned bu the state government. "Do you know who i am would not work". lol

Must Nigerians don't know their right. They ask u to plead guilty and u did. That shows how naive u re. All you needed to do is to use ur camera phone and snap ur car to capture it's position before and after they stole ur plate number. As far as am concern u were robbed. Secondly u inform ur lawyer b4 visiting alausa. They law says u cannot be judge over ur own case. That is what lasma did to you. You can still sue them if u know u didn't park on the road.

Based on what you wrote here, you admitted to a crime you didn't commit, yet Lagos State government is at fault? Interesting!

You underestimate our law enforcement system's abilities to abuse their powers and arm-twist citizens in the process.
Have you witnessed being wrongfully charged, calmly engaging what you think is dialogue with rational people and still getting charged with "resisting arrest"?
Do you realize exhibits get doctored regularly to rope people in Nigeria?
Have you ever seen a complainant being slapped at SARS office for calling a D.I.G of Police to aid his case? I have!
Let be guided in dealing with these people. Don't let's be victims, pls.
As for them pleading guilty? Well, that's the bastardized Plea Bargaining our mobile courts understand when they want to be mischievous.
They railroad you to jail once you refuse them putting the squeeze on you!
