Wow. Didn't know there was a thread dedicated to Ubuntu Linux. Have been dual booting Linux distros side by side with Windows for years until the advent of Windows 10. Since then I haven't looked back. Have abandoned Windows and now run Ubuntu Gnome on my 6-year-old Sony Vaio 8g RAM 320gb HDD. I very rarely run Windows in a virtual machine using Virtualbox. Here's a screenshot of my current desktop. 2 Likes 1 Share

Re: Ubuntu Linux by 4llerbuntu(m): 4:03pm On Aug 09, 2016 |
@blackweaver. Have you ever been able to.use a MiFi on Ubuntu via USB? Can't seem to this spectranet version to work. You know on windows its not exactly dialup. It works more like tethering. It doesnt have a dashboard. U just plug it in and it creates a virtual land. Network manager actually detects it. I located some drivers for it and installed so it is detected. USB modeswitch also installed and tried. I think that because its not dial up network manager doesn't know what to do with it. Tried WVdial, no results. |

4llerbuntu: never had to or tried to, I always use the wifi of the modem. Any reason why you're trying to do so? |

blackweaver: Desktop at home. No WiFi. The USB WiFi I had is busted. Read up some more about it. Seems its called a USB Ethernet connection. Not much by way of documentation |

nurain150: For bluetooth, check if you see the bluetooth logo on your taskbar (depends on your distro. You should be able to solve the prob from there. For the USB issue, I think you need to select the file transfer option from your phone. By default its on phone charging (mainly Android phones). Hope this helps. |

Re: Ubuntu Linux by Craigston: 3:45pm On Aug 19, 2016 |
nurain150:It depends on your system and you. Ubuntu is quite good. Are you using an old version? You should use a newer version (at least 14.04). |

pcguru1: Good for you; agree with the unity, everything else nah. Not really a fan of the plasma -especeially kde5.x. Maybe i'm just old fashioned o, took me a while to take to kde4.x sef. Haven't taken to gnome3 or unity. I stand with mate/Xfce. I'm still ok with cinnamon though. Maybe it's because my hardware has never been high end sha. When you start your desktop environment and your system is crawling, then you have to spend lots of time disabling all the compositing so you can get sensible enough performance. And gnome3 still makes some things that should be basic difficult 1 Like |

Hey guys! I run Win 8.1 Enterprise with Hyper-V for virtualization. I created virtual machines and want to run Ubuntu on one. What are pros and cons? Thanks |
Re: Ubuntu Linux by stag: 2:44pm On Sep 12, 2016 |
Fulaman198: Is this even possible? On same machine? |
Re: Ubuntu Linux by Gargoylesmiles(m): 7:03pm On Sep 17, 2016 |
stag: For me it depends on why you want to run Ubuntu in the first place. You just want to try it out or plan to work with it from the virtual environment? The former is okay but I wont advice the later. IMHO the major con is that the performance is never the same compared to when it runs native. I will suggest you dual boot after testing on VM. Hope this helps. |
