Henrodah:While I agree with you in substance, the execution was very poor and casualities lopsided. In such circumstances, it's difficult not to read meanings to it and thats exactly what happened. No matter what you had in mind to do, what matter most at the end is what you are seen to have done. The escape of Okpara for instance was too convenient not to raise an eyebrow. 5 Likes |

seunmsg:you're the one getting it wrong here. As loyal aides who knew that a coup is about to take place and their boss is not aware of such thing, why did'nt they tell him (fajuyi)?, or do you think that the hausa/fulani men in the army started planning the coup the day Maj Gen Ironsi went to visit Fajuyi? No i guess. It was already a planned coup already by the hausa/fulani men in the army and Fajuyi's house was the best place to strike because his aides has already sold him out to their brothers in the army. 7 Likes |

seunmsg:i've read the story but its biased one, even the o.p is a biased fellow. From my own understanding after reading different articles about the coup i think the January coup was carried out by those officers for their own selfish interest and their other major ghost plotters who were'nt mentioned. In summary yorubas are the ones who suffered for who they dont know like major Gen ademulegun and Major Gen fajuyi that were killed by the ibo and hausa soldiers respectively. |

Agu-Iyi Ironsi could have returned to Lagos with the same Helicopter he came with but Fajuyi assured him of his safety and he stayed. No doubt that Fajuyi deserves commendation for standing by his Boss till the end. But the tragedy of Fajuyi's death is that it exposed the Yoruba nation as a people who suffer from a perennial fear of the North. A Yoruba man and Governor of the Western Region is kidnapped and slaughtered but Yorubas did nothing. To this day, not one Yoruba man has ever called out the Northerners for killing Fajuyi. General Danjuma who killed Fajuyi is still highly regarded by Yorubas. 20 years later, again the Northerners kidnapp and slaughter MKO in a repeat performance. What did the Yorubas do? Nothing just as in the case of Fajuyi. Yoruba subservience to the North is so bad that the Yorubas will actually attack anyone who stands up the North such as Ojukwu, FFK and even Fayose. A fine Yoruba Solidier like Fajuyi was killed but his death was drowned out because it was Notherners that did the killing. If it had been Igbos who killed Fajuyi, that's when the Yorubas would have known how to talk. 24 Likes 1 Share |

I have said it many times and I will say it again: Yorubas are not cowards Yorubas did not betray any tribe If only our people get a good version of history and stop making judgement base on emotions . . . . At the end of the day, no amount of e-tribal war can stop my friendship with Uche, Chinedu et al 7 Likes |

mazichika: How could Awolowo that was in prison when both the first and second coups were hatched have make that promise? Kwontunu. There's kod. A little history would help here. Awolowo was Premier of the Western Region (equivalent of modern state governor) prior to independence. He quitted at the eve of independence to contest to be the Prime Minister. He contested and won one of the sits in the Federal Parliament allotted to Western Region. His ambition of becoming the Prime Minister ended because his party couldn't win the required number of seats to form government and both Zik's party and Amadu Bello's entered alliance to form government. He became the opposition leader in the federal parliament. Before long, he started having issues with Chief Ladoke Akintola who succeeded him as the Premier. Later, he was charged and sentenced to 10years in prison for treason around 1962-64 (I can't remember the year clearly). He was serving his term in either Calabar or PH when the January coup took place. Then came the July coup and he was still in prison. He was released from prison during the war and Gowon drafted him to the FG because his wealth of experience was needed. Now the questions are: 1. Could someone in prison have made such promise? 2. If he did, on what basis and in which capacity? (Remember her wasn't in the control of Western Regional Government again and he wasn't a soldier. We need independent verifications of what we are fed. Most of what you have these days are revisited, reviewed and doctored stories fed to us as history with the aim to cause confusions and create tensions. My take is that the politicians are heavily funding these tribal altercations going on online. 11 Likes |

While Awolowo never trusted the Igbos, the north never trusted Awolowo and theYorubas. The northern oligarchy instigated crisis in Western Nigeria in the same manner President Obasanjo used the Uba brothers to instigate crisis in Anambra State. This crisis led to the trumped up charges leading to the trial and imprisonment of Awolowo . Reports has it that he was to be poisoned in prison before the military coup altered the state of affairs. Awolowo was released from Calabar prison by Biafran leader Odumegwu Ojukwu and there was an agreement that while Ojukwu declares Biafra in the East, Awolowo would declare Oduduwa Republic in the West. The British establishment, sensing the dangers of Awolowo declaring Oduduwa Republic in the West, convinced Gowon and the north to checkmate Awolowo’s secessionist agenda by appointing him the Vice Chairman of Federal Executive Council. This strategy worked effectively and Awolowo was deceived that after Gowon’s tenure he would be given the opportunity of ruling Nigeria. Awolowo thus had to checkmate the Biafran dream to clear any obstacle to his ruling Nigeria while the north was looking for the right opportunity to throw him into the dustbin. In frustration, Awo resigned from Gowon’s cabinet when he realized he has been politically duped. Awolowo quashed the Biafran dream while the northern establishment killed the Oduduwa dream and betrayed Awolowo’s presidential ambition thrice. This fact was aptly captured by a prominent Yoruba leader and Nigeria’s former minister of aviation Chief Femi Fani-Kayode while replying to a boastful statement by another prominent northern leader, Alhaji Usman Farouk on how the north dominated the Yoruba people and conquered the Niger Delta. According to Fani Kayode, "... the north literally begged Awolowo not to declare Oduduwa Republic and go the way of Biafra even though that was his original intention…Fourthly it was the support that the south west gave to the north that allowed Nigeria to win the war. Fifthly it was the lie that Gowon and the northern leaders fed to Awolowo that he would be made President of the country after the war and after being effectively being made de facto Prime Minister under Gowon during the war that got Awolowo to support them’’, invariably, the Igbos and Yorubas were effectively dribbled, divided, manipulated and overpowered. Northerners were always wise when it came to politics 18 Likes 4 Shares |

I know making a movie about the first coup will generate a lot of controversies. However, i wish one someone will take the bold step and make a movie about the first coup. The production is going to be enormous and challenging, but it can be done. 3 Likes 1 Share |

gartamanta: It's really sad, isn't it? The North has taught us to hate each other so much that we cannot face our true enemies- the North. I've always said that the Igbos are not the Yorubas' true enemies and and that the Yorubas are not the ones that we Igbos need to be concerning ourselves with at this time. There's a more pertinent issue at hand here. 1 Like |
