Yes. Today, though, those names are mostly surnames. There's a tendency nowadays to give first names that will be understood in all the states.

A few of the surnames from other states that I do not know what they mean.

Onwe, Ominyi, Afoke, Iboko - the 'Abakaliki' groups in Ebonyi.

Mang, Igwo, Agbai - Abiriba, in Abia

Torti, Iphie - Arochukwu and related groups in Abia.

Owoh, Okwo, Nomeh - Agbaja/Nkanu axis, Enugu State.

Manafa - Anambra, not sure about the axis it is in prevalent use.

Enebeli and Ojugbana - Ogbaru axis in Anambra ( some variants of the names extend to neighbouring areas in Delta, Imo and Rivers)

Nnamani,Nnamene, Nnamoko, Onovo, Ogbodo.

All typical Nkanu names.

Learnt that Nnamani means that the bearer of the name, is a reincarnation of the father's father, ie the bearer's grandfather, who happened to be know as "Ani" during his time on Earth.

Nnamani- My father Ani has reincarnated
Nnamoko- My father Oko has reincarnated
Nnamene- My father Ene has reincarnated.

That what my Akpu-ugo Friend told me.

The guy doesn't know the meaning of Ogbodo or Onovo.

Kalu, Amadi and Ogbu are also common in Imo state. Amadi is common in Rivers state too.

I've heard of Gbugu in Enugu state, precisely Oji river LGA. Anyone knows what that name means?

Anything 'ugwu' is mostly answered by enugu people. Osu is preferred in imo, and kanu/kalu is abia made. My family's ancestral name too (ezeronye) is restricted to abia state, I'hv never heard of it anywhere else.

The OP requested names not mutually understood by all Igbos. Okay Oguta - Nwapa, Oputa, Enebeli, Iyasara, Odua, Adizua, Obua, Ossai.

Kalu/Kanu is the name of a god in the south. I think it is short for Kamanu/Kamalu.

Ogbu means someone who kills.

Dimgba refers to a wrestler. Mgba is wrestling.

Osita is short for Ositadinma, meaning may it be good from today onwards.

And, of course, I hope you know "Ogbu" doesn't connote someone who kill in the negative. It doesn't connote a murderer. But, rather a sort of a title you give to a great hunter with reputation of frequently killing big games. So, you may say Ogbu (killer) or Ọgba (shooter).

Then, Dimgba is great wrestler.

What's the meaning of Awele, Jideonwo, Ossai, Oputa, Enebeli

Awele means 'goodluck' or 'good tidings'. Ije awele in Igbo means 'safe journey'.

Jideonwo is probably a dialectical variation of jideofor - literally to hold the ofor or meaning to be right or blameless. The ikwerres say, Jideowho or Amaewhule (Amaefule/Amaefula/Amaefuna) instead.

Enebeli - possibly means to keep on looking 'onto God'. For example, E nebeli Chukwu. Perhaps an Ndokwa person could verify or give us the meaning.

Ossai to me seems to be a Bini name. Oputa may have an Igbo meaning of which I'm not sure of.

Ossai is mainly borne by Igbos from Oguta and Ndoni.

Didn't make sense either. His definition doesn't even correlate with the name. Can't make sense of it. "Na eje ama ana eze" doesn't even mean "they go to be the indigenous kings".

M'jema m' ze is more revealing than spelling it as Njemanze. "M'jema" means "As I journey". "m'ze" means "I avoid". Simply put it means "I journey with care".

Oguta is closely linked with Ukwuani. Ossai means "God's will". Adizua means "full of wealth". They are both Bini names originally but modified to Igbo over time.

Shouldn't the emboldened be Mjema?
"m" and not "n" should personalize.
