You can no longer open an Upwork account as a Nigerian. Except you are offering programming and mobile development services. If it is writing or digital marketing, your profile won't be approved.

It's not compulsory. If you have any certification pertaining to the service you are rendering, then you can include it there. Other certifications is for certifications that are not on the list.

Those of you interested in learning how to optimize your upwork account and start earning money right from the first week, I have put together a training manual (very detailed) for your use. After purchasing it, you will be enrolled in a special WhatsApp group for further private discussion session, to guide you as you progress.

The training manual plus WhatsApp group mentorship is N5000. Please don't tell me it's much as this is worth my time and every information I will be dishing out.

Email me at nwakstar2020@gmail.com for details.

This your statement is contradicting.

Start typing the skill, you will see a drop-down suggestion, select what you intend typing.

Note: you choose what pops-up, you don't completely write it yourself.

Saw and followed this thread earlier in the week hoping to read it when I had the opportunity. Was about to say well done OP for creating this wonderful empowerment opportunity for youths, but.......I have to say suggesting we use, or the use of Foreign Names, IPs, Photos etc is NOT legal .i.e. ILLEGAL..Get it Right and Do Not Kill Your Conscience By Saying There's Nothing Wrong With It! I mean, this expressly violates the terms and conditions for registering on UPWORK, declared on the website if you ever bother to read anything -- to which you AGREED BTW.

That said, I want to encourage and tell good Nigerians that you should not be bothered about all what we Nigerians say about ourselves. It is true there is a lot of cyber criminality about these parts and it might seem we're disadvantaged in some aspects when starting out, but, at the same time, it is general to a very large extent. Hence, let us not feel boxed into a corner.

Just be ready to work hard. If you keep focused, it will start rolling in. I registered on Upwork myself last year 2015 as an experiment, completed my profile and two exams which I passed well. Stayed like that for a while (maybe 1 or 2 months) and began to get invites for interviews without even doing any bidding. Same story with Fiverr, Freelancer..

I strongly advice you desist from towing the path of illegality, hope you all know that Upwork reserves the right to arbitrarily request verification from anyone at anytime. What would you do when you rake up that $$$$ with your fake name, picture, addresses, phone no and then get blocked till you provide some ID & bank Statement or even worse, permanently suspended?

Remember this because once you go down that rabbit hole there can only be one outcome which is endless frustration!

Thanks for your advice, but this is the risk some of us are willing to take. While it lasts, we hope to earn some money (also by working hard) and improve our personal economic situation which the government has totally failed to do. And before you talk about legality, don't you think it is totally illegal for PayPal to keep collecting our money without allowing us receive payments??

Fraud or not, Nigerians are one of the largest internet spenders in Africa and legal binding guys like you and the Nigerian government can do absolutely nothing to force PayPal to do the needful. If we can accept payments with our PayPal accounts, do you think we will be looking to cut corners just to earn money we intend to work hard for?

Let's face facts. You may be good at what you do, but how many Americans will be willing to work with you especially for the first time as a Nigerian? Are you telling us it is that easy?? You may have the patience BUT others do not have the patience. If you make the money, fine. If you get banned, fine. Life goes on.

But spending 3 years with just $200 earned?? No way. There is a lot we need to accomplish in life than spend 10 years trying to earn $500. If you have no day job or side business (and have a family), you will feel the pain of others struggling with online freelancing.

Cheers.

People like you are the reason Nigeria stinks to the high heavens abroad. Why must the mindset of a Nigerian always border on ILLEGALITY? WHY?

If Upwork ends up banning Nigerians from their site, I will be one of the first to travel to their headquarters to negotiate for your arrest and others like you as a bargain to getting that site open again. Mark my words. You do not know whom you are playing with. You think we are mates right?

Just watch out. Here you are committing an outright crime by using a false identity on that site and you are even bold enough to be making noise about it. What makes you different from terrorists who use false identities, false passports and falsified documents to enter countries to commit terrorist acts?

Better check yourself before you end up where you never ever dreamed of. I repeat, if Upwork ever bans Nigerians from their site as a result of your nefarious activities, I will be one of those who will personally make sure that you and others like you are fished out for identity theft and face the law.

Let me issue a VERY STRONG WARNING to Jasi7 and others like him here. Some of us have worked hard on that site for years to build it. Back then in 2009, Nigerians were hardly allowed on Elance, never on oDesk. Elance came to Lagos in 2011 where I and a few others were given invitations to speak at that event in Victoria Island. We opened the way for Nigerians to work there. oDesk opened up their platform to Nigerians, and the merger between Elance and oDesk created Upwork.

What I will not stand for, is for a few persons to use their criminal, nefarious ways to damage our reputation further and ruin a genuine opportunity for other upcoming Nigerians on Upwork, AND STILL COME HERE TO DEFEND THEIR ACTIONS!

No, enough of that rubbish. I will reiterate it again. If ever Upwork bans Nigerians from that site, I will personally put a call across to a few of their team members who were in Lagos in 2011 and assist them to fish out every single person with a false identity and get them arrested and prosecuted. Nobody will perform criminal actions on that site and come here to insult me for raising eyebrows about this. I would rather that person rot in jail.

Enough is enough!

@stagger, don't stress youself with people who don't get it and cant comprehend. Truth is some people are so dumb and keep causing problems for others. I feared some dumb people will come along and give me stress at the end of the day, and they actually came. It was a mistake opening this thread. Am out.

Lets talk privately if you dont mind.

Cheers.
