• Emergency meeting extended to third day
• Investigations to end soon, says DSS

The National Judicial Council (NJC) is fast losing its harmony as members failed to take a common stance on the arrest of judges after meeting for two days in Abuja.

They extended the meeting to a third day — today.

The council is one of the federal executive bodies created by law to insulate the judiciary from undue influence of the executive arm of government.

The Department of State Services (DSS) at the weekend arrested seven judges suspected to be corrupt. Many Nigerians, including the country’s body of lawyers — the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) — and major corporate organisations, have condemned the manner of the arrest.
The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Mahmud Mohammed, who chairs the NJC, condemned the action and members still failed to take a definite position at the end of yesterday’s meeting. The Council’s media unit disclosed that the meeting has been adjourned till Thursday.

The council had summoned an emergency meeting on Tuesday to examine the circumstances surrounding the arrests, at the end of which it was expected to issue a statement.

At the end of the first day, the resolution was not reached as the meeting was rescheduled for the following day.

There was an assurance from the media unit that a statement would be issued before the end of the meeting yesterday.

Having waited continuously without further information, journalists decided to remain on the premises of the council, the venue of the meeting, pending when it would be called off.

They were dispersed mid-day by security guards, who insisted that any form of gathering was not permitted around the premises for security reasons.

At the end of the day, it was learnt that the meeting had been extended till today.

Meanwhile, Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court heard some cases yesterday.

Activities in various courts within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) had reduced drastically since the Monday following the clampdown on judges.

The DSS has said investigations into the judges over alleged corruption case would be concluded this week.

A security expert told journalists yesterday evening that the judges might be arraigned next week.

A close associate of the NJC, who did not wish to be named, had said on Tuesday night that judges across the country were disturbed at the manner the SSS went about arresting their colleagues.

He said he was not aware that the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Mohammed, wrote any damning letter to President Muhammadu Buhari implicating some of the president’s subordinates in an attempted bribery.

“Even if there was any letter, I am not in a position to know, but all the talk about what they discussed when they met could not have been true,” he said.

He admitted that there was anger among the rank and file of the judiciary over the manner the judges were treated.

For the Judicial Council to regain its lost glory, it must shun corruption in all forms and return to being the last hope of the common man. The unfortunate development of arresting judges is surely an embarrassment to the body and especially to the upright ones among them, and to reverse the trend, they have to shun corrupt practices.

I find this submission by Prof. Itsay Sagay very relevant here especially the emboldened part:

The eminent professor of law said “justices of the golden age” decided cases such as Governor of Lagos State vs Ojukwu, Bello vs Attorney-General of Oyo State., Garba vs Attorney-General of the Federation, Obeya Memorial Hospital vs Attorney-General of the Federation, Wilson vs Attorney General of Bendel State, all of which he said were decisions against military governments.

“Because of the superior moral authority of the Justices who presided over those cases, their fearsome reputation as men of steely integrity and honour, those judgments were obeyed without question. Even the military were afraid of these men of uncompromising integrity.

“It was unthinkable that the DSS or its equivalent in the days could invite them for questioning, not to talk of searching and arrest. Their strong moral armour protected them against executive adventures and gave them real power over the other arms of government.

“Surely, we could be like that again if we rebuild our judiciary and hold them up to the highest standards of morality, transparency and integrity,” Sagay added

CJN position is up for grabs and what did the president do?
He orchestrated the raid on Supreme Court Judges so as to appoint his own people.

This is a funny country, the dss are all filled with illiterates, all they know is oppression, suppression, intimidation, lawlessness. You said u found millions in hundreds where are the millions or at least pics of the millions, I don't know how the dss counted those monies and concluded on a figure, they should tell us if they used their hands to count it or a counting machine.

U go to arrest a judge and act like u are trying to arrest a drug baron or a terrorist.

I hope the judiciary wouldn't fall for this intimidation.

Yes there are corrupt judges, that should be dealt with but with the actions of the dss it's obvious that corrupt judges aren't the target but ensuring that the judiary do their bidding always. It's a clear intimidation.

2019 should come fast so a new intelligent leader would sack all these illiterates and incompetent guys brought in by buhari.

They're in a fix. Surely, the clean judges will want the corrupt ones tried and punished while the corrupt ones and those sympathetic to them will fight to get them off the hook.

It will be a bigger shame on you all if you allow yourselves to be torn apart by this anti-people administration like they have done to the NLC.

Wake up from your slumber.
Read the handwriting on the world.

Their intentions are obvious:
1. Intimidate and molest the Judiciary.
2. Arm twist them to decide cases in our favour forthwith.
3. Divert the attentions of Nigerians from 'recession' and other negative 'achievements' of their Govt.

DON'T FALL FOR THEM.

When I look at these people condemning the raid by DSS, I see the same people who lynch to death a poor man caught stealing a handset or some supplies from a departmental store..

Most ironically, these same people are the ones who say something is wrong with this country- oh well, indeed, something is really wrong with the country and that thing is them!

Brother, big mistake you made. NEVER join issues with these guys- simply make your statement, zoom off, and leave them behind eating dust on your trail.

There is something critically wrong with whatever they have housed inside their skull and I doubt it could EVER be fixed.
