Yes. Read about her.

A lot of these overgrown idiots on this forum are uneducated louts. Most of them don't even read and they expose themselves every time they post. I'm sure none of them know what Lady Liberty represents and its origin. Yet they keep spamming the thread with it.

Imagine the other clown asking if he's still in the era of statues when former NBA players who're legends are getting statues erected for them...Shaq just got one this year at the staples centre and Kobe should get one as well in the next few years. The Queen would get a big statue when she dies as well. They don't even know the symbolism of statues, yet they always feel the need to post their illiterate opinions everywhere.

These folks are the most backward and dumbest people on the planet. The ignorance is just appalling most times.

We nor dey value our own thing naa....

How will it improve their standard of living and provide affordable and standard education?

Tourist destination? Where is the infrastructure on ground to accomodate the tourists? Village Ife with its delapidated roads and hotels? Little power supply? Zero shopping malls?
Abeg go sleep.
that's not a problem, one smart guy(other tribes included will see the business sense in providing what the tourist need. development is not a one event thing

Stop contradicting yourself, Tourism generates billions no doubt, but saying moremi's statue will generate million of dollars from tourism is a SHAM.

the statue was not built to generate billions of dollars by itself, look at the bigger picture.

Ogbeni, oyibo no dey dat mumu. Abi u think they dnt have beta statues for oyiboland?
... Tourism provides jobs opportunity for the local people, State and even Yoruba Race as a whole. In craft and others Yoruba cultural materials as well as hotels such tourists stayed during visitation and this will provide money making Avenue for all involved. Little do you know that white men don't want to see things that are replica to their own because they know it more than you but want to visit places of amazement and a culture different from theirs.

What you get from this is that it was built and the materials used where locally sourced materials. Instead of u to look at it positively u come in with a blind approach. It isn't your fault. This country has its lapses to b blamed. Anyways what are the materials that were used in building this?

One word: Tourism. People troop in to see the statue from all over the word, and these people spend millions of dollars yearly in the process of buying food, staying in hotels, transport, etc. Not to talk of the aspect of exposure to other peoples cultures and ideas, which is a fast track to economic and infrastructural development.

The Ayaba Moremi hailed from Oyo, married to the then king of Ile Ife, a kingdom that is said to have been at war with an adjoining tribe who were known to them as the Forest people (Ìgbò in the Yoruba language, though the said tribe is believed by scholars to have had no relation to the contemporary Ìgbòs of modern Nigeria). Scores of Ife citizens were being enslaved by these people, and because of this they were generally regarded with disdain by the Yoruba city-states.

Moremi was a very brave and beautiful woman who, in order to deal with the problem facing her people, offered anything she had to give in sacrifice to the Spirit of the river Esimirin so that she could discover the strength of her nation's enemies.

She is said to have been taken as a slave by the Igbo and, due to her beauty, married their ruler as his anointed queen. After familiarising herself with the secrets of her new husband's army, she escaped to Ile-Ife and revealed this to the Yorubas who were able to subsequently defeat them in battle.

Following the war she returned to her first husband, King Oramiyan of Ife (and later Oyo), who immediately had her re-instated as his Princess Consort. In order to fulfil the pledge she made to Esimirin before embarking on her mission, her son Olurogbo was given in sacrifice to the Spirit because this is what it asked her for when she returned to its shrine.

The Edi Festival is said to have then been started as a means of celebrating the sacrifice the princess made for the people of Yorubaland. Furthermore, a number of public places are named after her in contemporary Nigeria, such as the female residence halls at the University of Lagos and Obafemi Awolowo University.

... Misplaced priority. Talking about 'white elephant project' in the mixed of a deep economic recession. Use the fund meant for this statute to empower some youths within that locality and one thousand and one of those statutes can be built for tourism( if that's the case) if the economy starts experiencing prosperity again.

I understand that that statute may have some cultural implications but the timing of its errection which may cost as millions of naira is not economically good.

Another Nebuchadnezzar with a great statute for him and his people to worship, but his great statute was crushed into powder by the living God and blown away and scattered never to be gathered together again forever, but He established and establishes His own everlasting kingdom. And so also such gods and kingdoms shall all fail with all their worshippers but His kingdom which also is ours stands forevermore

The best way to improve standard of living is to promote tourism, tourism activities in that area would increase people would want to come and see, there by increasing the income of the host community, toll fee are collected, employment Is there by created because the statue must be maintained.
