MikeCZA:
Remember the first CJOPS? He's not the best?

There are a couple at the rank of Major General though.

JOPS underwent some changes and became a completely configured -and new - concept under Gen. Ferreira. One could argue that he conceptualised what the Division should be, and wasn't, unfortunately, in the position long enough to realise that vision. sad "A new head on an old old body", as some said. Mgwebi managed to operationalise many of Ferreira's ideas, and for that I give him credit. Of course, his pre-94 background was always a consideration. sad

JOPS has come a long way since then. A Navy man is now acting CJOPS shocked shocked shocked!

Not sure if he's still on anti-mine duty, but if he is, major exercise concluded down in the southern coast involving the Navy, the CSIR and unmanned anti-mine vessels.

A year ago, this time. Durban, South Africa to [Malawi, along the entire lake!], Pemba, Mozambique via Dar, Tanzania, on motorbike. grin grin grin
A post-deployment indulgence for me.

Despite all our petty fights on this thread, everyone(?) here had good wishes.

That's because despite our political, cultural and nationalistic differences we are all pretty much good Oga's.

And of course, the planning now starts for the Dec 2017 trip which completes the whole SADC. Namibia, Angola, DRC, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, SA.

The Mozambican, Malawian and Tanzanian martial connections were so beneficent, we're planning the next trip entirely around similar exigencies.

@chkil: I know you already have a production line up in Khenchela churning out NIMR Hafeet class vehicles.
Any truth to the rumour Algerian SF are to adopt the NIMR Ajban SOV?

until now nothing about the Ajban SOV , the NIMR II is the only model build in algeria and arab countries like United Arab Emirates are not serious in military contract and investissment . the NIMR II production line is very slow

for algerian SF , there is rumors about the mercedes G-Class MRV , algeria have a mercedes-benz production line in Tiaret for 4*4 G class, and many others models and trucks (military and civilian)

what an irony.one of the best in the world and you can't lower your country's crime rate(one of the highest in the world, internationally known).

and pls if you check my post I never mentioned Nigeria. what i mentioned is Algeria and Tunisia.

so when it comes to ego nobody do it better than you south Africans(we are best in everything) .

They number no more than 99 across the country in a police force of over 150 000 officers, so naturally they'll never intercept every common crime let alone every CIT/ATM heist, but they're incredibly proficient at their work. They're well resourced and led by great leadership however the wider police force has serious personnel issues. But for ordinary SAfricans like myself successes like these make me proud.

Very very few of them in a police force of 150 000. I dont know the exact numbers.....but i would guess 50/60 of them in Gauteng (Joburg and Pretoria), 30/40 in Durban, 30/40 of them in Cape Town. My guess. And i dont think im very far off.

At the height of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, yes. Recruitment by private military contractors depleted the ranks but the situation has somewhat stabilised since then. Can't divulge figures but let's just say this: used to be Jozi and Cape Town bases which had full complement and operators had to fly if needed elsewhere.

Now it's bases in most of the metros. We're still losing operators to PMCs (and to the bloody PPU CAT, which doesn't want to train its own! -my STF mate insists I put that down) though, across all of our elite units.

Dec 2017. We planned the last one over 6 months but that was only Moz, Malawi and Tanzania. Familiar territory, so to speak. The planning started this past weekend with maps taken off walls, excellent craft beer and 7s rugger cheesy!

2 dead dudes, both shot on the head. Because of the wounds I'll assume 1 dude was shot with an MP5 then the other one with an armour piercing round from an R1. He's f#cked I tell you.

I had no idea R1s are still used by the SAPS. I heard most of them were rounded up and destroyed a few years back, in compliance with a UN-sponsored disarmament programme.

Just as well I suppose, some surplus weapons always tend to slip through the cracks.

The visiting head of the FBI's elite HRT unit was given a presentation on STF Selection & Training Regimen. His very first question,
"This is a police unit?"

The only unit on the entire continent with whom the US Secret Service will collaborate on the entirety of a visiting US president's schedule. (Not a boast: with training, anyone can do this. Kenya went from the Westgate debacle to covering 20% of Obama's visit. Far more than militarily-superior Egypt.)

I'm not too sure if they still use the R1 that's why I had to confirm from frumentius who didn't bother participating grin

But according to the documentaries I saw, they use the R1 with armour piercing rounds to kill criminal vehicle engines.... But it seems like one STF member didn't get the memo and shot a thug in the head and blew his brains opened. The gore is will inspire Neil Blomkamp's next thriller.

Urban legend to explain civilian shortage. In one of the NCACC reports we even imported hundreds of FNs from Zim stockpiles to re-purpose as R1 for SANDF snipers.
[For GreenandGold: yes, the STF also uses them. Later on my home desktop I'll dig up some recent pics.]
