When Bible writes about genealogy, Women are always silence. The genealogy of Jesus only mentioned 4 women because of their exceptional faith. When it pertained to inheritance, Women where also silence. Meaning they were never given anything. Starting with Abraham who had many children apart from Ishmael and Isaac. Abraham gave gifts to his female children but never divided the inheritance equally. When Jacob divided inheritance, nothing was giving to the only female child.


When Moses shared the current land after they conquered the inhabitants, Women were given nothing, save the daughters of Zelophehad of the family of Manasseh because he had no 'son'. Meaning if he had sons nothing for the daughters. Infact, the daughters where not allowed to marry outside the family of Manasseh. Why? So that the inheritance doesn't move to another family.

In the Bible, inheritance are giving to female only if the man has no son. Number 26 : 7.

Why? because God wants to keep name of the man. Man is the head of the house. God is the head of Man. That is the order.


Woman means' from Man' or 'came from Man'. So, how can what came from man(Woman) be equal with Man?

I can recalled that the issue of gender equality was brought up in a convention at the South East of Nigeria around two years ago, then their elders kicked against it immediately. Just last week we were discussing a topic that relates to rights of widows in my church at Ebonyi. I was so surprised how people held tenaciously to custom especially were bible is silent.

Believe me, various ethnic custom speaks more powerfully against this bill than religion. Its quite sad that women are this relegated in Africa and Nigeria in particular. Even if this bill is passed it will take time for us to actually accept it.

Imagine for instance, a wealthy ibo man dies leaving his wife with let's say a girl kid. The woman has right to keep some if not all his properties and if she likes she should also get married to another man while living in the home of her previous husband.

In Islam a woman has no financial obligation and the economical responsibility lies on the shoulders of the man.

* Before a woman is married it is the duty of the father or brother to look after the lodging, boarding, clothing and other financial requirements of the woman.

* After she is married it is the duty of the husband or the son.

* Islam holds the man financially responsible for fulfilling the needs of his family. In order to do be able to fulfill the responsibility the men get double the share of the inheritance.


For example, if a man dies and after giving the shares of other relatives, if the children (i.e one son and one daughter) inherit N150,0000the son will
inherit One Hundred Thousand Naira and the
daughter only Fifty Thousand Naira.

Out of the one hundred thousand which the son inherits, as his duty towards his family, he may have to spend on them almost the entire amount or say about eighty thousand and thus he has a small percentage of inheritance, say about twenty thousand, left for himself.

On the other hand, the daughter, who inherits fifty thousand, is not bound to spend a single penny on anybody. She can keep the entire amount for herself. Would you prefer inheriting one hundred thousand Naira and spending eighty thousand from it, or inheriting fifty thousand rupees and having the entire amount to yourself?


Islam gave the right to the women to inherit. In several Verses of theQur’an - in several verses, it is mentioned that a woman, irrespective she is a wife or she is a mother, or a sister, or a daughter, she has a right to inherit. And it has been fixed by God Almighty in the Qur’an.
