Two soldiers and one militant leader die in fresh Ganfouda battle

An Islamist commander is reported to have died along with two soldiers as the Libyan National Army renewed its assault on the Ganfouda terrorist enclave in Benghazi.

Fowzi Al-Fidi, whose family come from Gwarsha, was described by one army source as a commander in the Benghazi Revolutionaries’ Shoura Council and by another as an Ansar Al-Sharia leader. He was wounded by shrapnel yesterday in an air strike and is said to have died today.

However in today’s fighting, which included further air strikes, two members of the Saiqa Special Forces were also killed and a number of others wounded .

The LNA is claiming that it has occupied more areas of Ganfouda squeezing the militants into a yet smaller area. The terrorists remain cut off from the beach across which supplies and reinforcements were brought from Misrata until at least November when the the LNA launched its major assault.

Nigeria Airforce says it flew 6773 hours in 2016.

he Nigerian Air Force said on Monday in Yola, Adamawa, that it flew 6773 hours in 2,105 missions and 3,534 sorties in its operations in the North-East in 2016.

The Air Officer Commanding, Tactical Air Command, Air Vice Marshal Nurudeen Balogun, made this known while briefing the Federal Government team and representatives of Bring Our Girls Back (BBOG) on tour of the North-East.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed and his Defence counterpart, Mansur Dan- Alli, led the team.

Nurudeen said that over N2 billion was used for Jet A1 fuel for aircrafts, excluding the cost of maintenance and consumables during the period.

Giving update on significant operations conducted within the period, he said that crackdown on the insurgents was organised by the Theatre Command, which commenced on April 25, 2016 and lasted for 23 days.

“A total of 348 sorties were generated by the air component for the operation that led to the capture of Alargano, the supposedly spiritual headquarters of Boko Haram.

“The intensity of the operation of crackdown forced some breakaway groups of the Boko Haram insurgents to move towards the far North.

“The Multi-national Joint Task Force initiated Operation Gama Aiki and very important location, Malamfatori, was captured on Sept. 27, 2016,’’ he said.

He said that Operation Forest Storm was also organised by the headquarters of the Nigerian Air Force, which aimed at identifying Boko Haram targets at Sambisa with a view to degrading the capacity of the insurgents.

The commanding officer disclosed that a seven-day operation between Oct. 22 and Oct. 28, with 55 missions, was a precursor for the Operation Rescue Finale that was going on in the region.

According to him, the Operation Rescue Finale which commenced Nov. 1, 2016, was instrumental to the Dec. 22, 2016 fall of Camp Zairo, the major stronghold of Boko Hram.

In his contribution, the Air Component Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, Air Commodore Charles Owoh, said that during the operation, the Air Force carried out medical outreach programmes in military hospitals at Balori and Bama.

He said that as a result of government’s commitment to ending the insurgency in the region, not less than five serviceable surveillance aircraft were now operational, compared to only one in July, 2015.

Eastern Libyan army commander signs arms deal with Russia despite UN embargo

A deal between the commander of Operation Dignity forces, Khalifa Haftar, who leads the forces of the Tobruk-based House of Representatives (HoR), signed a deal with the Russian government that would see $2 billion dollars worth arms coming to his self-proclaimed army, an HoR members, Ismaeil Al-Ghoul, revealed to the London-based Al-Arab newspaper.

Al-Ghoul told Al-Arab on Monday that the visit of Haftar to the Russian aircraft carrier off Tobruk port saw the two parties signing a deal that would allow Haftar to reactivate the contracts of the former Libyan army of Muamar Gaddafi with Russia.

“Abdullah Al-Thinni-led government of the HoR has tried many times to reactivate the contracts with Russia, it is the right of the Libyan army to have them back from Russia.” He added.

Al-Ghoul told the UK-based Al-Arab that this new deal signed with Russia would be so useful to pave the way for lifting the UN embargo on exporting weapons to Libya’s army, which he said is fighting terrorists across the country.

“Such a deal between the Libyan Army and Russia is a good loophole in the legal body of the UN embargo on Libya as it envisions an upcoming collapse of the resolution as Russia’s step would be so vital in that regard.” The HoR member indicated.

According to the Al-Arab newspaper, the deal that Haftar stroke with Russia onboard the aircraft carrier earlier last week is a continuation of the 2008 stopped contracts between Libya and Russia.

The NAF is the only service arm that has taken online media seriously. The Army is nowhere to be found. Even the six-part documentaries aired last year are yet to be put online. The Army doesn't even have a YouTube page. That is what happens when you appoint a grandfather to head a position as sensitive as P.R. No innovation, no nada.
