Marvel lay aside the TEC 5 and brought up the MAC penetrator as he saw some hazy shadows staggering. He didn’t wait to get a clear visual, as far as he is concerned, anything that moves in there is an enemy. He switched the fire setting to full auto and depressed the trigger. Armor pieces bullets tore through the hardened armor of the Mantis troops, blew up the chrome laminated armored helmets and shreds their bodies into flesh parts.
Some of the assault troops that weren’t hit by the bullets recovered quickly and returned fire. Bolts of laser and bullets struck all around the piller Marvel was hiding behind. The return fire was relentless, Marvel have no way of moving a single inch. He activated his ear micro comm unit that linked him to ADA.
“ADA give me the distance between me and the places fire are coming from. “
“Sir you are been targeted from five angles, three among them have heavier outputs. I detect three guns firing from each of the three angles. “
Marvel brought out a special kind of smart grenade. It was a special concoction of Hardwire. It hasn’t been named yet. But one thing about it is that distance and angles can be programed into it and it can move on its own and hit precise targets. Marvel may just call it a precision smart grenade. The grenade also have a nasty aspect, it is a frag grenade filed with flechette anti-personnel projectiles. Marvel brought out three of the precision smart grenades.
“ADA link to the smart mode of these grenades and connect them to the three angles of heavy fire. “
“Done sir. “
Lifting up the grenades he ordered, “Launch. “ the grenades flew from his hands directed by ADA to the three specific targets of the heaviest fires and landed them there. The grenades exploded on impact. The nine troopers behind the heavy fire where cut to ribbons by the flechette rounds red hot from the heat by the explosions. The projectiles cut through both flesh and armor like a hot blade through hydrogenated fat.

The firing stopped for a bit long enough for Marvel to peer behind the pillar that served as his cover. He noticed that the other two areas where fire was coming from where still intact, just that the shrapnel from the explosions have made them stay under cover.
“ADA I want you to pull out the pillars behind which the other two angles where fire was coming out from. On my mark. “ Marvel quickly reloaded his MAC penetrator with a full clip. “Now ADA. “
The Mantis troops hiding behind the two pillars were surprised and shocked as they saw the pillar sunk into the floor of the buildings too fast for them to recover. Before they could reorient them selves, bullets from the penetrator blew holes through them.
After the last of them fell, Marvel came out of hiding and moved into the devastating mess that was once his sitting room. Broken furniture, blown wall marked by bullet holes and of course torn bleeding and burnt body parts. Marvel stepped carefully through them all going towards the huge hole where once his windows and wall was. Heavy wind from outside blew the heavy smoke back into the room.
“Two attack air cars are closing in on your area. “
“Armored? “ Marvel asked his defense assistant.
“Yes sir. “ replied the electronic voice. Marvel knew that by now they would have dropped a missile on him if they are sure that all their initial assault troopers here are dead.
Marvel hoist the TEC 5,” ADA plot their approach trajectory and lock in the direction to the next two rockets on the TEC 5. “
“Angle of approach locked sir. “
Marvel waited as soon as he heard the whine of a coming vehicle, he fired. He didn’t need to see any target. The air cars movements are already locked in. The twin rocket moved, following the pre-programmed directions from the defense assistant, the moved on the two white, blue and red colored Mantis police air car. The rockets targeted the heat escape vents of the vehicles and exploded. Both cars fell and crashed on the floor.

The bounty hunter’s relief was cut short by the next words from ADA. “ Sir a raptor class gun boat is locked on your target. It has a full image of you and is getting ready to fire. “
Oh shit, that gun boat is bad news, he won’t survive a single second when it attacks. His armor can’t survive beyond just one shot from that vehicle. Time to run. As Marvel sprinted he directed ADA. “Engage detachment protocol. Move the archetype copy of all your mode to the external receptors. Activate the self destruct parameters. Also activate the Nexon 3 II air car for immediate deployment. “
“Orders received and acknowledged. “ ADA said as its holo image disintegrated.
Marvel was already in the lift going down when the explosions hit. It must have been one of the missile that was shot. The massive shock the whole building to its foundation. Marvel reeled and staggered as the lift jerked with its movements. When the door open, Marvel was thrown roughly aside. The electronic circuit sorts and sparks flew about. The lights at the lower level winked out and came on again. The power junction must have been destroyed and the back up power taking over. The emergency light was less bright than before as Marvel ran and staggered toward a door at the end of a short corridor. When the door opened, Marvel laid eyes on one of his pride and joy. The slick black Nexon 3 air car, with a tiny modification of twin micro propulsion engine laid at the top for speed. And one advantage of this particular air car is the camouflage mode Hardwire have added to it.
When Marvel got to the car he discovered it was already on as par his instruction to ADA.

When Marvel got into the car, he looked ahead a discovered that the whole roof of this basement have caved in. Bright daylight flooded in. Marvel quickly activated the camouflage mode and lifted the car. When he moved out of the destroyed house he saw three air cars closing in, the APC further away. It won’t engage because it is only a personnel carrier without really heavy armaments on it. But for the raptor gun boat, Marvel didn’t see any sign of it. The air cars continue scanning the wreckage of his house not seeing his air car leaving. The camouflage was active, but it drains too much power and can only work for several seconds. Marvel engaged a wide range scanner to locate the gun boat. That drained too much power which knocked off the camouflage mode of the air car. Proximity alarm started going off and a prolong ping sound showing that the air car is locked on as at target. Marvel didn’t even wait to think, he hit both the evasive and counter measures button at the same time. The air car loop, automatically engaged in several twisting turns to avoid all the shells been shot at it by the three pursuing air cars. Damn, he can take out the three air cars, his vehicle have more teeth than they do. His worry is about that gun boat. It have every advantage over Marvel’s air car. It is bigger, faster, more armored and have more guns.
First things first, Marvel decided to deal with the air cars first and worry about the gun boat when it shows up. He jerked the break on the air car and turn to get very close to them. He picked up two out of the three on his target lock on the car’s tactical screen. He fired two armor piercing rockets and watch as the smoke trail flashed toward the two targeted vehicles. With very shot space, the air cars couldn’t turn or maneuver before both rockets hit the cars and there were blossomed explosions. They were over the Imra lake by now and the wreckages of the air cars fell into the water. Marvel was about to go after the last air car when the gun boat appeared on his scope. Before Marvel could do anything, the gun boat started to fire. The explosions from the fire hitting his air car knocked the car from side to side. Marvel could think of one thing to do, he dove the car downwards towards the lake. Just few meters before the car his the water, he punched the emergency ejection button. As his chair pulled off from the car, it form a transparisteel cocoon that fell into the water and sank down. But just before the cocoon hit the water Marvel heard and explosion behind him that told him his air car have been blown away. With that sad thought the cocoon sank into the lower depths of the lake.

Chapter Eight

The Mole was in his sanctum santorum going through a potential juicy data when the annoying shrill of the alarm started to sound. That is a sound he hadn’t heard in a long time and The Mole have learnt way back never to ignore it. Swerving his power seat to face the three monitors on his desk, he punched the codes to bring up the areas the alarm was coming from. Nobody have been stupid enough to cross his turf in a long time. Well maybe he have to teach them a new lesson. But what The Mole saw on the screen been shown to him through his hidden cameras shook him totally. Mantis troops already standing at his door, already prepared to break his door down.
For a few seconds what was just going through his mind was how and why without any real answer. But he should have known long before the Mantis got here. The Pit is one of the few places Mantis police don’t visit since most of the inhabitants here don’t pay for the police security subscription. So what is bringing them here at this time and to his door steps of all places. Besides he should have known the moment the Mantis appeared before The Pit unless they may have put a total communication black out on The Pit. He tried one his comm lines, none went through. Well that just sucks.

Then it hit him with the speed of a gravity ball, this may just be about Marvel’s deal with the corporations. He warned Marvel about them but he didn’t take his warning seriously. Now the bounty hunter have entered their sh.it list. Niw some of that is about to rub off on him. The Mole got angry just then. He stood up, went to a power junction box on a part of the wall in the room, when he opened it, what is seen is not the power circuit of a power junction, but a switch board with switches blinking lights on green, The Mole turned them all down to red. Quickly he got a high performance data cube, connecting it to the main frame of his system and started a download sequence. While waiting for the download to be through, he ran into a store room, placed his palm on a part of the floor. The sec lock recognized his finger prints, a hidden panel slide back, The Mole pulled out and auto repeater buckshot gun. Pulled out some drum clips for the gun, loaded one to the gun and put the extra clips on a back pack.
A tiny sound notified him that the data cube has finished downloading. He plucked off the cube, setting up the termite explosives to go on auto self destruct as he prepared to leave the place, and escaped part already set in his mind. But he stopped. Thinking, how can he allow all these low life sons of bitches walk over his place without him fighting back.

He moved back to his monitors, seeing that the Mantis all crowded in frnt of his door, the have no idea of any other place to get in. He saw them using a power drill on the door. The drill spew out heavy sparks as it hit the armored door. At this stage it will take them some minutes before they can get through. The Mole decided to shorten the time for them. He activated the hidden explosive on the door. From the monitors he could see some Mantis in their black uniform and dark helmets crowding the door. Some were staying back creating a perimeter, further back others diverting traffic and passers-by through alternative routes. He saw two huge land armored personnel carrier, with very huge wheels higher than a man six feet in height. Well time to give them a proper welcome.
The Mole stepped on a button, the door blew up and took the crowded Mantis behind it with it. Their bodies mingling with the bits and pieces of the scattered door. As soon as the smoke from the explosions cleared, the other Mantis troops ran into the corridor with professional precision. They used the tactical cover and attack format. The Mole allowed several of them to come in before he let his auto security to give it’s warnings.
“Please for your own safety, no unauthorized person is allowed beyond this point. “ The auto security voice spoke through speaker grills but the Mantis police ignored the words and pressed on.

The Mole smile was dark and cryptic as he thought, well no one can blame him that they weren’t given fair warnings. The Mole activated the lazer grid. The Mantis were already in the middle of the trap before they knew that something was amiss. The Mantis squads saw the lazer grid in pattern of small squares of an inch diagonally and knew what it is. The lines of hot light that criss cross to form the grid started to move from the front towards them. They stopped marching on for a while in the small corridor. They were drawing back, all disciplined formation became disorganized. As they turned to run back, they discovered another lazer grid was coming at them from behind which have boxed them in. The two grid were moving ever closer with the Mantis in middle. They sort for other way to escape, even looking for anything like a seam or join in the walls that indicates a control source or panel part but nothing like that was seen. The corridor appeared totally seamless. Since they could neither go forward nor backwards, the troopers close in on themselves, packed together tightly. The Mole couldn’t hear their screams of anguish and paralyzing fear, because he had shut of the audio pick up and their helmet hid the expressions on their faces. He watched in passively as both grid came on each other and slice through all the bodies chopping them to tiny parts. Their wasn’t much blood because the parts that are chopped were cauterized, smoke slowly drifting from the charred pieces.
With the lazer grid still active, no other Mantis could come in until someone short several spherical shape devices from a big tube. The device fell into the corridor rolled to the edge of the grid field and stopped. A green dot of light started blinking at fast interval.
The brought up a tactical readout on the screen to find out what the devices are for. The results shows that they are EMP detonators. Quickly with out a second thought, The Mole put up an EMP shield seconds before the spherical devices released negatively charged particles in form of blue electrical lightning. The shield didn’t get up fast enough to protect the lazer grid. Sparks flew from the generating wall of the lazer grid and both of the switched off.
Another group of Mantis troops moved into the corridor, when they passed the burnt heap of their deceased colleagues, the automated voice came on again. “Please no unauthorized person beyond this point, you are all trespassing, I suggest that you go back at this point. “

The rush movement of the black clad troops stalled for a while as the voice spoke. They learnt from what happened to the first wave. They were alert looking around for likely traps.
From his point of observation, The Mole observed the maneuver for a while, as soon as the crowded in enough, he activated the two tri-barrel mini chain guns in hiding. He put it on both on auto motion detect fire and thermal targeting acquisition. In these modes, the guns will buy him time to make his escape.
The troopers were surprised when a perfectly sealed wall that have shown in theirs scanners to be full wall opened and two very long Gatling like guns but more devastating, pointed darkly ominous barrels at them. Before the squad leader could scream for a retreat, the tri-barrels blazed. Heavy amour bullets filled the confined corridor scathing through anything that moved or is warm blooded, with precision and accuracy of near 90%. In two seconds, a score of troopers lay dead chopped to pieces.
The Mole laughed, my twin bit.ches, ever reliable. With that he ran to a wall behind the room that slide apart as he got closer. Entering the place, he saw a cylinder tube on a raised platform, it had a transparisteel canopy and silver colored body with short tubby wings behind. It was a mining machine. Suitable for navigating the several abandoned mines and tunnels below The Pit that very few know about. The few are the ancient miners that dug the tunnels in the beginning. Well he as a versatile descendant of the miners he have access to privileged info on doors, access and maps to navigate the mines.
The mine machine’s canopy lifted and Marvel got in on the only seat in the small vehicle. He powered it on, activating the navigational map he had downloaded into it’s system’s memory. Before igniting it single propulsion engine, he activated a small display screen and set it on the view from the corridor. It showed him that more troopers are now wary of getting into the corridor. Two troopers try shooting RPGs at the twin mini guns, but the motion detection wired into the guns’ fire settings shot each of the rockets on the air before they got to their targets. The Mole delayed his escape to watch the view.

Soon a remote armored drone was driven in to the corridor. The drone is specially made to fit into tight corners and give forward cover for troopers. It have a heavily dense armored plate at its fore that covers the rest of the body. The Mantis troops divided into two groups, the first group were carrying energized hand held shield, the second groups where following behind. The heavy fire from the twin mini guns was striking the dense plate, ricocheting and striking the shields some bit heavily into exposed body. Still the Mantis troops pressed on covered by the drone. The continuous fire from the twin guns have chopped off huge chunks of the plate, the body of the drone have started to smoke at the bullets chewed through the body. The drone coughed and died after several bullet blew big parts of its engines. Four RPG shot rockets at the guns, but the rockets were blown off before they got to their targets. Yet the relentless heavy fire continued. Casualties continued to mount from the troopers side. Multiple grenades and rockets were launched from different angles, due to too mu h targets, the mini guns missed some of the rockets and they struck the guns, they blew up and went out of action. There was a wild cheer among the troopers when the guns died.
The Mole was impressed with the mini guns performance is way top notched. He definitely will look for it from the black market and mount it again when he set up a new shop. As he watched the corridor got quickly crowded. The Mole set up his ultimate defense, the self destruct sequence of the whole set up of his base of operations. Well he activated all the explosives set up under the pillars holding up floors of his building. When he was satisfied with the potential casualties off Mantis troops in the room, he detonated the whole explosive at once and punched the ignition of the mine machine. As the machine moved, he saw the floor of the corridor cracked and caved in. The troopers and the walls collapsed into the newly created hole. His display went dark as he lost the video feed
As he drove the mine vehicle through the dark mine tunnels, he that how Marvel have been the cause of all these. Well Marvel is going to owe him big time for this. He also a very good idea where he will find him.

As for The Mole, everyone in The Pit knows better not to mess with The Mole. Well the corporations didn't know and I'm sure the Mantis police have learnt the hard way why they call him MEAN MOLE.
