The Nigerian government has called on the African Union and the South African government to take decisive and definitive measures to protect Nigerian citizens and other Africans within South African borders.

The Senior Special Assistant on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora to President Muhammadu Buhari, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, made the call Monday amid reports of renewed violence against Nigerians and other Africans in South Africa.

The Nigerian Community in South Africa led by Ikechukwu Anyene confirmed the attacks and looting of Nigerian-owned businesses in Pretoria West on Saturday.

Mr. Anyene said the union had reported the incident to the Nigerian mission and South African police.

“As we speak, five buildings with Nigerian businesses, including a church have been looted and burned by South Africans,” Mr. Anyene said.
“One of the buildings is a mechanic garage with 28 cars under repairs, with other vital documents, were burned during the attack.
“Also, the pastor of the church was wounded and is in the hospital receiving treatment,” he said.

Mr. Anyene said the union had informed Nigerians in South Africa to be vigilant in the face of renewed xenophobic attacks.
According to him, the union received information that there will be xenophobic attacks against foreigners on February 22 and February 23.
Mrs. Dabiri-Erewa described the attacks as an “unnecessary setback”.

She advised Nigerians to be extra cautious as it looks like South African government seems to have no control over these attacks.
The SSA, however, urged restraint on the part of Nigerians and warned that further attacks without any reprimand may have dire consequences.

Mrs. Dabiri-Erewa said the attention of the AU was being called because of reports of planned attacks against foreigners on February 22 and February 23.

“These attacks should not be allowed to continue because it is a big setback,” she said.
Mrs. Dabiri-Erewa had two weeks ago met with South African High Commissioner in Nigeria, Lulu Aaron-Mnguni, on the killing of Nigerians in South Africa.

Mr. Aaron-Mnguni promised that the South African government was investigating the matter.
“We have lost about 116 Nigerians in the last two years. And in 2016 alone, about 20 were killed,” this is unacceptable to the people and Government of Nigeria, Mrs. Dabiri-Erewa said.

My brother, I can authoritatively tell you that this crimes are not just committed by one tribe alone. I have been in s.a alot of times to confirm this. Go to marabastard in Pretoria or Sunnyside, even at hebbrow in jozy, or freer state and see what igbos and Yoruba's are doing. Though they are about 40% of Nigerians doing legit business in s.a while 60% are into crime. I will say 50% of Yoruba ppl are into scam and permit frauds while 30% are into drugs, the remaining 20% are doing legit biz while 45% of igbos are into drugs, 35% into illegal gold business and the rest legit. Even some other minority tribes in Nigeria are doing lot of crazy things in s.a. so please brother don't make it a one sided stuff. Thanks

I know many yorubas are into internet fraud which is equally as bad as selling drugs.

But the South Africans are more concerned with hard drugs being sold to their children and most of their girls being lured into prostitution.

See, yorubas acknowledge that drugs, internet fraud is bad but our brothers don't even care as long as they are making their money.

You need to check comments of people here on nairaland praising those that are peddling drugs.. They call it hustle while those that can't peddle drugs are called cowards by our brothers

Well it all depends on the mindset and the people at home are not making it any easier. I remember the first time I came back home after spending two years outside, people are like 'na play you go play they? Even my friends ridiculing me just because I didn't buy a car and I was like waoooo. They put so much pressure on you. Some times you get scared of calling family and friends at home because when you do, no body will ask how your coping only your parents will, they all just keep demanding as if your ATM, some start talking of rent when our rent for a month outside naija is the equivalent of rents paid in a year back home. I had to buy a car I only use once a year. This is just some of the reasons why guys go into a lot of rubbish.

Whilst I am man enough to admit that alot of my igbo bros sell drugs in South Africa, are u man enough to call ur various ethnic groups to demand Igbos be removed from Nigeria to spare u the embarrassment?

Spare u the concern? Spare u the time wasted commenting and venting of ur hatred for well over 40million people?

It is really that simple, Igbos are not ur concern and u really have no business with them but for Nigeria.

We acknowledge that we have problem in our community and are ready to work towards amending them, that is y we request u give us a referendum so we can leave with our problems.

Thank you for ur understanding.

Yes the name u posted is that of my igbo brother.

Like i said, i understand that some of them get involved in drug dealing and we are not denying that.

Wat we are asking is that to spare u the problem, u allow us referendum to vote to leave Nigeria with our problems.

Right now to be honest, we dnt know where all of the problem is coming from, living with people that hate us and want to destroy us.

This is y we request that the whole Nigeria come together and either kick us out to Biafra or give us a referendum to decide our own faith.

Thank u for ur understanding.

No, tell ur leaders in the NASS, Military and Presidency.

Come out on the street and protest.

Condemn the Army wen they attack Biafra protesters.

We want to see action, so igbos can leave Nigeria.

Igbos have made all the moves so far whilst Nigeria keeps blocking it, we are tired of Nigeria.

Make some moves of ur own, it takes two to get result.
