Khona was by Mafikizolo not Uhuru.. nice thread.. Nigerians don't easily accept other African songs like they accept ours , even though I believe there are better music coming from the continent than the thrash that is constantly tearing my ear on Nigerian radios..

Yeah, it's by Mafikizolo ft Uhuru. I mistakenly deleted the word Mafikizolo while editing it and I didn't realise until you pointed it out.

There are also great Nigerian songs. Try this thread. https://www.nairaland.com/3439718/list-150-greatest-nigerian-songs

@Naptu2,
Another nostalgic one. Seems I always come late to your threads. Please try using the share button on your OP. Thanks.

I think the song Celebration by the Ghanaian group Osibisa should be here.

And Eddy Grants song Walking on sunshine.
What do you think?

And I think Jonathan Butler-keep holding on, should be in here somewhere.

Once again good job man.

I knew that I would forget something. I wrote about Celebration on my diary yesterday night while planning this thread. The DJ at the Silverbird Man Of The Year Award ceremony played both Celebration and Coffee Song and I planned to include them in the thread, only to forget at the last minute.

@Naptu2.Lovely combination. The songs took me down the memory lane of life. Most of the oldies were regular on NTA and radio stations especially the night jamz on radio in the 1980s & 1990s before the advent of private stations. I came across many of these on youtube.

I am not very conversant with the acceptability of the new generation African songs in Nigeria since i am out of the country.
Another popular one was Awilo Longomba - Carolina

Awesome. I love the song. It's funny. LOL.

I'm trying to remember the title of a song by Mariam Makeba. The chorus is weelala wela ma weela, weelala weela maweela weela weelala maweela oh... been looking for the song but the title eludes me.

Reminds me so much of Margareth Singana's Shaka Zulu, men that song stir up a dormant spirit within me.

You can search for the song on google with part of the lyrics. Found "sponky ponky love" by Jabu Khanyile that way.
Ï'm also searching for a song. Dunno if it was by Pasto Goody Goody because the chorus is something like "Hey hey Mr Goody Goody". Someone help me

Thanks, already did. Just downloaded it.

The title of the song you seek is familiar to me. Don't know if it's Lt. Shotgun that sang it, it has a reggae tune to it. Perhaps naptu2 can help? smiley

When I Get Older: The Story Behind Wavin’ Flag

Since it became the theme song of the Soccer World Cup in 2010, many young people all over the world have come to know and love the “Wavin’ Flag” song of Canadian-Somali Hip Hop singer K’naan (born Keynaan Abdi Warsame). This creative and impressive book for children aged six and up tells the story behind that song. In relatively few words and with superb illustrations it tells the story of the thirteen-year old K’naan, whose family was suddenly confronted with civil war violence in Mogadishu and fled first to New York City and from there to Toronto, Canada. Whenever K’naan did not feel well, was scared during the violence, or felt discouraged when he was picked on by schoolmates in Toronto, his grandfather would comfort him with the poetry lines: “When I get older, I will be stronger. They’ll call me freedom, just like a waving flag.” At school in Toronto, the story goes, K’naan set these words to music and bridged the gap between himself and the other students at his school.

You must know this song if you watched NTA2 Channel 5 between 1987-1993. You might not know the name of the song, but you must know the song.

Mory Kante - Yeke Yeke

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ca5mbh3DbOY
Yeke Yeke was the soundtrack to most tv programs back in the early 90's. You have got to give it to the Guineans, Senegalese and Malians when it comes to classical west african music..

The railway stations always had this song and agolo by angelina kidjo on repeat while people wait for trains. Cant believe these songs are over 20 years already.
